FBI files worth requesting

Rocco Pellegrino - May have been one of the most respected Genovese captains of his time. I would have done it myself but I burnt my bridges with FOIA when I basically told them to fuck off after sending me garbage. (I did not pay for portion of Ianniello file which came totally useless.)

I just saw on FBI Dead List 2016 that Rocco Pellegrino is on there so a file is probably prepered already due to a previous request. It will probably come for free plus shipment. I have no clue though if the file is any good.

What are the possible reasons that files that go back to say the 1960's or earlier, where all the key people are long dead, (both the subject of the file and anyone that arises in it), are still redacted so heavily? I'm sure there are valid reasons the FBI does this, I would just like to understand more.

So much of this can't effect any modern day investigation in any way. Is it to protect families of the deceased?

You could go back to the 1930s public enemies files of John Dillinger and Bonny & Clyde and find redactions. The reasons follow multiple court rulings:

What I always find crazy about the redactions is that if you ever get a file directly from NARA, there will be very limited redactions. They will still markout informants, IRS info etc. I just had a 200+ FBI file from them and only 30 pages even had a redaction. Too bad NARA gets you at .80 a page and three years processing...

With NARA, if you're serious about it, it might be worth it to go there in person if you can and make the copies yourself. I've done it myself several times many years ago.

Good idea Antiliar, hopefully we can promote more sharing of files, especially since they're all digital now and easy to upload.

I wonder if it would be worth it to figure out how to create a library of all these files, sorted by family. Hosting a website might be a little much, but maybe on the Internet Archive like Gavin Schmidt, there's tones of Chicago and Milwaukee files on there.
