Yeah I wasn't saying Alfred E. Neumann in your story was a wigger, I'm just saying he reminded me of the wigger guy in that there was something really goofy about him but at the same time he was a legit thug.

Sometimes it’s the dude who really doesn’t look the part who’s the one you gotta watch out for. I’ve known some pretty goofy-seeming guys who were legit scary individuals. I’d imagine Vegas can be a magnet for trouble too.

Yeah starting from the pandemic going forward this aspect of it got a LOT worse and I said fuck it and tapped out last October. I'm now hiding out in one of the richest suburbs in Ohio, about as different from Las Vegas as you can get.

Just so long as you’re not in Youngstown. I always have bizarre and surreal experiences in Youngstown. Last time I was there I drove past a Sons of Italy lodge in a strip mall next to one of the most depressing strip clubs I’ve ever seen and there was a morbidly obese Black dude doing jumping jacks in an orange safety vest in front of the SOL, at 1 am on a Tuesday. It was like something from a David Lynch movie, in that it had some sort of dreamlike significance, but I have no idea what it was trying to tell me.

Well, pretty much all of Ohio is full of Lynchian dark energy, but the Mahoning Valley really cranks it up to the next level. I had surgery there in 2018, incidentally. (That's where this particular specialist I needed just happened to be.) I'm in Dublin now, if you know where that is. Might settle in Cleveland suburbs eventually, might just settle in Dublin.PolackTony wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 10:31 pm Just so long as you’re not in Youngstown. Wait what were you doing in Youngstown? Mob history research?

I’m through that area a lot given the frequent driving between NYC and Chicago. Usually stop in Y/Cleve if I get started late and don’t feel like driving straight through. That whole region is fascinating and must be experienced in person to truly grasp (true for the Pitt area as well).Ivan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 10:42 pmWell, pretty much all of Ohio is full of Lynchian dark energy, but the Mahoning Valley really cranks it up to the next level. I’ve been to OH a thousand times but never been to the Columbus area. Been told that it is a world away from the Lake Erie vortex of chaos.

It is nothing like Northeast Ohio. Columbus is about the same size as Cleveland in terms of population (2 million or so in the metro area) but it's all spread out and there's nothing really urban about it except Downtown and the ring of neighborhoods around it. It's not a proper city like Cleveland is. It's more like a gigantic college town surrounded by a weird patchwork of suburbs. The super-rich suburbs are nice though (that's why I am in exile in one).PolackTony wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 11:20 pm I’ve been to OH a thousand times but never been to the Columbus area. Cleveland-Akron-Youngstown is very "ethnic white" (hell it even had a shitload of mafiosi) while Columbus is more like "generic American white" if that makes sense. Tons of rednecks who migrated here from Kentucky and Southern Ohio while NE Ohio is pretty much devoid of them and feels more like a cross between the East Coast and Chicago (which makes sense since it's halfway between them).

Even though I’ve never been there that’s exactly what I’ve assumed Columbus is like. Lower Midwest (like Indianapolis), as opposed to old-urban Great Lakes/Rust Belt Midwest. Different history, different culture, different patterns of settlement and demographics.Ivan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 11:45 pmIt is nothing like Northeast Ohio. As a Chicagoan, I feel much more affinity for Cleveland, or even Western NY, than for Downstate IL (which is like a different country).

It's exactly the same difference. Chicago is to Downstate Illinois as Cleveland is to Southern Ohio, and in exactly the same way. The boundary between the "Two Ohios" is basically state route 30 just south of Canton.PolackTony wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 11:53 pm As a Chicagoan, I feel much more affinity for Cleveland, or even Western NY, than for Downstate IL (which is like a different country).
Western NY is just more Great Lakes but further along the cultural continuum so instead of being 50/50 Chicago/East Coast like Cleveland it's more like 35/65.
Pittsburgh's an odd one because it's basically a Great Lakes city but someone stuck it in Appalachia and it is culturally influenced accordingly. Steubenville and Wheeling are like this too but even more so.

Pitt is like the middle finger of Appalachia extending through the middle of the Great Lakes region lol.Ivan wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 12:26 amIt's exactly the same difference. Anyway, Scott's sources are telling him that Inendino's informer file was closed over 40 years ago, which suggests that he wasn't ratting in the past several decades.
