Visiting Buffalo 1963

Post by chin_gigante »

Anna Sergi’s recent research article on the mafia in the Niagara region got me thinking more about Buffalo, so I decided to look back and get the ball rolling on the 1963 chart. Starting out with a membership list, I’ve gathered the following names and listed sources. I’m using the declassified 1967 membership list as a starting point as it seems to be the largest available from that period. From there I’ll add or subtract members based on their presence in other sources.

October 1967 FBI chart (accessed here: https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... 7-10308%22)

Stefano Magaddino (Boss)
Fred Randaccio (Underboss)
Joseph Falcone (Captain/ Utica)
Frank Valenti (Captain/ Rochester)
Dominic Adiutori
Samuel Amico
Anthony Arena
Joseph Bongiorno
Samuel Bonito
Alfred Caci
Joseph Caci
John Cammilleri
Stephen Cannarozzo
Roy Carlisi
Charles Cassaro
Domenick D’Agostino
Anthony De Stefano
Joseph DiCarlo
Joseph Fino
Nicholas Fino
August Giannavola
Serafino Grio
James Laduca
Antonino Magaddino
Peter A. Magaddino
Peter J. Magaddino
Rosario Mancuso
Dominic Mantell
Salvatore Miano
Charles Montana
Pasquale Natarelli
Benjamin Nicoletti, Sr.
Ernest Panebianco
Anthony Perna
Rene Piccarreto
Salvatore Pieri
Pascal Politano
Victor Randaccio
Salvatore Rangatore
Angelo Rizzo
Jacomino Russolesi
Samuel Russotti
John Sacco
James Salamone
Salvatore Salli
Daniel Sansanese, Sr.
Vincent Scro
Benedetto Spano
Joseph Todaro, Sr.
Richard Tribunella
Harry Bordonaro (suspected)
Felix Borelli (suspected)
Paul Briandi (suspected)
Stephen Cino (suspected)
Charles Cipolla (suspected)
Joseph Fiorella (suspected)
Salvatore Frangiamore (suspected)
Daniel Gasbarrini (suspected)
Anthony Iati (suspected)
Nicholas Rizzo (suspected)
Salvatore Rizzo (suspected)
Dominick Romeo (suspected)

Stanley Valenti (suspected)
Albert Volpe (suspected)
John Volpe (suspected)
Eugene Volpe (suspected)
Frank Volpe (suspected)
Paul Volpe (suspected)
James Vona (suspected)

In the same report the following are also listed as members of the Magaddino family by the FBI Albany division:

Sylvester Battaglia
Anthony Damiano
Salvatore Falcone
Vincenzo Femia
James Fiore
John Melito
Frank Pelli
Frank Russo
Joseph Sabella
Angelo Conte (suspected)
Anthony Falange (suspected)
Samuel Farrari (suspected)
Anthony Scro (suspected)
Charles Scro (suspected)
Joseph Scro (suspected)
Angelo Thomas (suspected)

The 1960/ 1969 FBI hierarchy comparison also lists Carlisi, Natarelli, and Nicoletti as captains, and Russolesi as the Rochester captain prior to Valenti however I'm not sure how accurate this is since it also inaccurately lists Scro as the consigliere.

I cross-referenced the above names with the 1985 DOJ list posted by Scott Deitche, the 1993 FBI list posted by Snakes, and the 1997 Halton Regional Police list. The following suspected members later appear on these lists as confirmed members:

Felix Borelli
Paul Briandi
Anthony Falange
Samuel Farrari
Salvatore Frangiamore

1985 list (found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8828)
1993 list (found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8550&hilit=capozzi)
1997 list (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201907 ... 86d75a.jpg)

Dominic Adiutori and James Salamone were both identified as Pittsburgh members in the 1985 DOJ list, but my understanding is at least Salamone was actually a Buffalo member.

Richard Todaro was also listed as a confirmed member in the 25 Years After Valachi report (https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/ ... =en&gbpv=1)

Stephen Cino can safely be dismissed as a Buffalo member given he was later inducted into the LA family (https://lcnbios.blogspot.com/2022/09/lo ... 1980s.html).

===

Joseph Valachi also confirmed that the following were Buffalo members:

Joseph LaBarbara
Samuel Lagattuta
John Montana
Anthony Privatura
Pasquale Sciortino

===

Other names I have seen in various FBI files from the 1960s listed as members or suspected members:

Albert Agueci (murdered 1961)
Vito Agueci (confirmed on 1997 list)
Salvatore Brocato
Thomas Callea (died 1967)
Joseph Fiorella
Samuel Galante
Louis Innazella
Joseph Leone
Giacomo Luppino
John Papalia (confirmed on 1993 list)
Edward Scillia
Salvatore Scro (died 1962)
Michael Tascarella

Great list.

- Dominick Romeo can be confirmed based on the conversations he had on the Magaddino tapes. From Siderno.

- Valachi said he knew Agueci's lawyer in Canada was an amico nostra but couldn't remember his name. It's a reference to Harry Bordonaro so he could be moved to confirmed. Harry's father Calogero was a member but not sure when he died.

- I believe Frank Valenti was still technically a Pittsburgh member until late 1964 when his legal restrictions ended and he was allowed to return to Rochester. Magaddino said he'd been looking after Valenti's interests because the other borgata (Pittsburgh) couldn't or wouldn't.

- Frank's father Joseph Valenti was a member based on info from Sam Mannarino, as he said Stan Valenti's marriage to Tony Ripepi's daughter was an arranged marriage by made members. Don't know if Joseph Valenti was alive or whether he belonged to Buffalo or Pittsburgh. Heritage in Grotte, Agrigento.

- Joseph DiCarlo was identified as a Colombo member in 1967 right before he transferred back to Buffalo. If that's true his brother-in-law Tony Bonasera likely arranged it.

- Sam DiCarlo was living in Miami, not sure if he transferred out of Buffalo like his brother, Joe Pieri, and Tronolone but he was definitely made with Buffalo originally.

- Pasquale and Saverio Monachino should be suspected members. They were probably with the Rochester crew like their friend Sciortino before moving to Canada.

- Cassaro's origins were in Ravanusa.

- Sam Galante was with Pittston.

- Other Cipolla brothers were suspected members in Hamilton, would have to check which ones. Their heritage was in Racalmuto like the Bordonaros and Scibettas.

Also with there being confusion over whether Giannavola was from Enna or Caltanissetta, I've seen other references to guys born in that part of Enna who listed their origins as Caltanissetta. It's right near the border of the two provinces and like Camporeale/Trapani I wonder if the provincial border changed at some point like it did in other areas. It's mostly academic anyway.

With Thomas Callea, his father and uncle were from Licata and major figures before they were killed in the 1930s. Callea was explicitly named as a Buffalo member and his funeral was attended by a bunch of Family leaders.

That's something I was wondering about as well. Castrogiovanni was renamed Enna between the world wars so that may have had something to do with it.

The other thing I noticed that surprised me somewhat was the lack of members from Trapani. My knowledge of Buffalo before looking into them from this thread was limited but I had assumed there would be more Castellammaresi members. Whereas with all the members I've looked into so far, only the Magaddino relatives have turned out to be from there. Wasn't expecting it to be majority Palermo/ Agrigento. But then again there's about 50 names left to look into so that very well could change.

Yeah, there was a larger Castellammarese element in the 1920s but the prominence of the Magaddino clan sort of distorts people's view. Family was much more Agrigento-Caltanissetta/Enna throughout its history. Early unconfirmed members too were from there.

Most of the mainlanders were Calabrian which is interesting and indications are they had 'ndrangheta roots. You had the Ontario guys then Utica recruited some guys who started out with the Central NY Calabrian group(s) like Nino Trunfio, Frank Russo, and Sam Grio. The "boss" of the early Calabrians was Giuseppe D'Agostino, not sure what became of him but he was older. Don't know if he was a relative of Dominick D'Agostino but Dominick was Calabrese and a longtime liaison to the Utica crew.

Enna province didn’t exist until 1927. Before that, the comuni that are today in Enna were part of Caltanissetta province (with a small bit formerly in Catania province). At this time, the city of Castrogiovanni (Castru Janni in Sicilianu) was also renamed Enna and made the capital of the new province.

chin_gigante wrote: Tue Jan 03, 2023 12:44 pm Anna Sergi’s recent research article on the mafia in the Niagara region got me thinking more about Buffalo, so I decided to look back and get the ball rolling on the 1963 chart. Starting out with a membership list, I’ve gathered the following names and listed sources. I’m using the declassified 1967 membership list as a starting point as it seems to be the largest available from that period. From there I’ll add or subtract members based on their presence in other sources.

October 1967 FBI chart (accessed here: https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... 7-10308%22)

Stefano Magaddino (Boss)
Fred Randaccio (Underboss)
Joseph Falcone (Captain/ Utica)
Frank Valenti (Captain/ Rochester)
Dominic Adiutori
Samuel Amico
Anthony Arena
Joseph Bongiorno
Samuel Bonito
Alfred Caci
Joseph Caci
John Cammilleri
Stephen Cannarozzo
Roy Carlisi
Charles Cassaro
Domenick D’Agostino
Anthony De Stefano
Joseph DiCarlo
Joseph Fino
Nicholas Fino
August Giannavola
Serafino Grio
James Laduca
Antonino Magaddino
Peter A. Magaddino
Peter J. Magaddino
Rosario Mancuso
Dominic Mantell
Salvatore Miano
Charles Montana
Pasquale Natarelli
Benjamin Nicoletti, Sr.
Ernest Panebianco
Anthony Perna
Rene Piccarreto
Salvatore Pieri
Pascal Politano
Victor Randaccio
Salvatore Rangatore
Angelo Rizzo
Jacomino Russolesi
Samuel Russotti
John Sacco
James Salamone
Salvatore Salli
Daniel Sansanese, Sr.
Vincent Scro
Benedetto Spano
Joseph Todaro, Sr.
Richard Tribunella
Harry Bordonaro (suspected)
Felix Borelli (suspected)
Paul Briandi (suspected)
Stephen Cino (suspected)
Charles Cipolla (suspected)
Joseph Fiorella (suspected)
Salvatore Frangiamore (suspected)
Daniel Gasbarrini (suspected)
Anthony Iati (suspected)
Nicholas Rizzo (suspected)
Salvatore Rizzo (suspected)
Dominick Romeo (suspected)
Richard Todaro (suspected)
Stanley Valenti (suspected)
Albert Volpe (suspected)
John Volpe (suspected)
Eugene Volpe (suspected)
Frank Volpe (suspected)
Paul Volpe (suspected)
James Vona (suspected)

In the same report the following are also listed as members of the Magaddino family by the FBI Albany division:

Sylvester Battaglia
Anthony Damiano
Salvatore Falcone
Vincenzo Femia
James Fiore
John Melito
Frank Pelli
Frank Russo
Joseph Sabella
Angelo Conte (suspected)
Anthony Falange (suspected)
Samuel Farrari (suspected)
Anthony Scro (suspected)
Charles Scro (suspected)
Joseph Scro (suspected)
Angelo Thomas (suspected)

The 1960/ 1969 FBI hierarchy comparison also lists Carlisi, Natarelli, and Nicoletti as captains, and Russolesi as the Rochester captain prior to Valenti however I'm not sure how accurate this is since it also inaccurately lists Scro as the consigliere.

I cross-referenced the above names with the 1985 DOJ list posted by Scott Deitche, the 1993 FBI list posted by Snakes, and the 1997 Halton Regional Police list. The following suspected members later appear on these lists as confirmed members:

Felix Borelli
Paul Briandi
Anthony Falange
Samuel Farrari
Salvatore Frangiamore

1985 list (found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8828)
1993 list (found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8550&hilit=capozzi)
1997 list (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201907 ... 86d75a.jpg)

Dominic Adiutori and James Salamone were both identified as Pittsburgh members in the 1985 DOJ list, but my understanding is at least Salamone was actually a Buffalo member.

Richard Todaro was also listed as a confirmed member in the 25 Years After Valachi report (https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/ ... =en&gbpv=1)

Stephen Cino can safely be dismissed as a Buffalo member given he was later inducted into the LA family (https://lcnbios.blogspot.com/2022/09/lo ... 1980s.html).

===

Joseph Valachi also confirmed that the following were Buffalo members:

Joseph LaBarbara
Samuel Lagattuta
John Montana
Anthony Privatura
Pasquale Sciortino

===

Other names I have seen in various FBI files from the 1960s listed as members or suspected members:

Albert Agueci (murdered 1961)
Vito Agueci (confirmed on 1997 list)
Salvatore Brocato
Thomas Callea (died 1967)
Joseph Fiorella
Samuel Galante
Louis Innazella
Joseph Leone
Giacomo Luppino
John Papalia (confirmed on 1993 list)
Edward Scillia
Salvatore Scro (died 1962)
Michael Tascarella
Angelo Massaro
Benedetto Carcone (Utica)

Great work here, Chin.

B. wrote: Tue Jan 03, 2023 1:48 pm - Cassaro's origins were in Ravanusa.
As we’ve discussed before, both the Carlisi brothers and Al Tornabene’s mothers were Cassaros, sisters who were originally from Ravanusa (Tornabene was also a cousin of Gambino captain Al Tornabe/Tornabene). We’ve also seen that the majority of guys working in the huge bootlegging ring in Chicago/Cicero/WI under Totò LoVerde in 1930 were Canicattesi and Caltanissettesi, and several had close ties to Buffalo. One, Angelo Lalomia, from Canicattì, was stated as residing in Buffalo at the time of the bust.

There seems to definitely have been an Eastern Agrigentino axis in the US mafia, which encompassed (at least) Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago, and the Gambinos, apart from the better known and more easily discerned Western Agrigento network. Racalmuto, Ravanusa, Grotte, Naro, Licata, Campobello di Licata. One thing to note which could have been an important factor here is that in the past all of these comuni (apart from coastal Licata) were part of the same Central Sicilian dialect area, which also encompassed Caltanissetta and modern Enna provinces as well as the western fringe of Catania. There was thus something of a cultural distinction between these areas and Western Sicily.

Yep, exactly. Eastern AG was its own distinct identity for sure. Like Caltanissetta they've also had to deal with the Stidda in recent decades.

Roy Carlisi's father-in-law Calogero Romano was almost certainly a Buffalo member from Pietraperzia in Enna/Caltanissetta but it's very close to Canicatti. I've read Romano moved between Chicago and WNY like them but not sure it's confirmed. He was also close to the Calleas from Licata.

Re: Cassaro. One of the Carlisi sisters apparently married a Charles Cassaro who lived/moved to WNY but I never confirmed if it was the Buffalo member, though there's def something to it given the mother was from Ravanusa.

Given most males in the Carlisi clan were members and associates in Chicago, Buffalo, and even the Gambino Family I'm sure their mafia origins go back to Sicily.

Am I correct in thinking that Steve Magaddino's cousin Peter J Magaddino (not Nino Magaddino's son) was still a Buffalo member in 1963?

And do we know if Gaspare Magaddino was a Buffalo member?

You mean the Gaspare involved in the Bonanno faction during the Bonanno Split ? If so, no he was previously the boss of the Castellammare del Golfo cosca, and I don't think he was formally transfered in an American Family
