Goodfellas, Casino, and the Sopranos the crown gems with HBO Gotti right behind. Donnie Brasco is solid as far as mostly getting the life right, but oof...rewatching today it's gotten pretty dated. Some seriously cheesy moments in it and bad acting.

This was tongue in cheek by the way.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

I really hate the moment when they explain the "fuggedaboutit" term...

Fine Pena Mai (End of Sentence:Never) is a movie on the story of Antonio Perrone in the 1970s when from simple Apulian criminal become a boss of the Sacra Corona Unita until the 1990s when was sentenced to 49 years.
Its interesting how the Apulia before the Nco create a satellite crew was a virgin territory and on the born of SCU.

That was one of my problems with the movie. Joe Pistone is a tough, ugly, bald Italian guy. Johnny Depp wasn't right for that role at all.
He sucked as Whitey Bulger, too.

+1 on casting Depp as Pistone, of all people.Ivan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 6:59 pmThat was one of my problems with the movie. Joe Pistone is a tough, ugly, bald Italian guy. Johnny Depp wasn't right for that role at all.

Donnie Brasco is a great flick, but doesn’t make it into my top tier. Casino, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, A Bronx Tale, and the Gomorrah movie all do. Also GF 2, with a mention for the extensive use of Sicilianu. And not to forget the Sopranos, for its deft portrayal of the seedy, inglorious modern mob era and its true to life depiction of contemporary (for the time) Ital-American tristate culture.

Though I’m sure Eboli would throw his hat in the ring for “Chicago Overcoat”:

Yeah, Depp is the reason I don't automatically include it with the classics. Not even his performance, just the fact that he's a terrible fit and it distracts from the story. Michael Madsen can play a good gangster but he wasn't a good fit for Napolitano either... he'll always be Mr. Blonde to me, a cold psycho. The dynamic between Donnie and Sonny Black in the book is important and got lost in the movie.
Pacino on the other hand... perfect. Can't imagine anyone else playing Lefty. Would have been 10x better if he was bouncing off someone other than Depp, but ah well.
John Ventimiglia (Artie from Sopranos) would have been a home run as Pistone. Looks the part and is a trained actor, would have killed it in the scenes where Donnie is frustrated with Lefty. 100% could have pulled it off but he was a nobody at the time.

Regarding the Sicilian Mafia, I would place Il capo dei Capi as the most faithful series.
The movie Gomorrah for me best represents the Camorra.
Someone mentioned the movie Anime nere...I'm sorry, but I think this is one of the worst movies in the mafia, I think it's so boring, I understand the proposal of the movie, but it makes me sleepy.

Though it makes me a total Fun Ruiner to say this, my big beef with the Sopranos when it comes to realism is that it's WAY too violent. An American Cosa Nostra family with that many hits in the 2000s would have more feds on the streets than members and associates. There would have been an absolute hurricane of media sensationalism, too ("the shocking true story of America's bloodiest crime family").PolackTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 10:01 pm And not to forget the Sopranos, for its deft portrayal of the seedy, inglorious modern mob era and its true to life depiction of contemporary (for the time) Ital-American tristate culture.
