What is the most faithful movie about the mafia?

Post by aleksandrored »

There are many Mafia movies out there, from the classic Scarface in 1932 to movies like The Irishman today, for you which movie best represents Cosa Nostra, which movie is more faithful to reality, both in fact and in style of life?

For me is Donnie Brasco

Obviously even the ones based on true events take artistic license and don't always match up with reality, whether it be historical, in terms of style, etc.

That said, the ones that come across most realistic to me are the Scorsese/Pileggi films Goodfellas and Casino, The Sopranos series, and yes, Donnie Brasco.

Gotti ‘96, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, the Sopranos imo are the best ones I’ve watched. Each one of those movies represent a different style on “the life”, Gotti being the upper echelon etc, Goodfellas the betrayal & the common mafioso (my favorite movie of all time), Donnie Brasco portrayed a lot of the inner circle & mob lingo, and finally The sopranos was more of what the mob is/was 20-25 years ago until now.

It's definitely a lesser known movie, but I would say that Witness to the Mob is pretty realistic. It is based on Sammy Gravano, and while it's not 100% accurate, it is pretty believable.

I think its Goodfellas, and while I think most current and ex wiseguys secretly agree, *I* think DeNiro’s very public stance about hating Trump has diminished his status in their eyes in recent years. And I think they are less likely to acknowledge Goodfellas as the correct answer to the question.

That being said, Franzese has been asked this question a bunch and he’s always said a dark horse answer is Analyze This—as crazy as it sounds. He said one thing ppl don’t appreciate about the life is how many total morons there are, and Analyze This does a good job of showing it.

Donnie Brasco is great in terms of realism except for the part where Pistone saws up Sonny Red. That was DUMB.

The rest of it is excellent in terms of little details that feel true to life. Goodfellas too, though Goodfellas seriously prettied up the Burke crew and made the whole story look much more glamorous than it really was (no one would sit through a truly realistic Henry Hill movie LOL.)

Nick Pileggi was married to legendary screenwriter Nora Ephron for like 20 years and she actually wrote a screenplay about Henry Hill and his life before Pileggi wrote Wiseguy. They legit knew Henry. It had a less serious and more comical tone, but the story arch was similar—Henry Hill and his mob buddies getting in and out of trouble.

Sean Fennessy is a movie critic that writes for the Ringer, and he does a really popular podcast with Bill Simmons called the Rewatchables. On their Goodfellas episode, he talks about how his dad was a Suffolk County narcotics detective that helped arrest Hill on a couple occasions. He talks about how he and the folks in his neighborhood were well aware of Henry Hill long before Goodfellas ever came out. It’s a great listen if you get a chance (the whole podcast series is great to be honest).

Il Pentito (good luck to find that one in English) & Il Traditore about Buscetta, Il Capo dei Capi serie about Riina, his sequel l'Ultimo Padrino about Provenzano, Il Camorrista about Cutolo for the Italian movies/series. All the mafia movies of Damiano Damiani are cool too.

Mafia Inc based on the Rizzuto for Canada

The Connection about the murder of judge Pierre Michel for French Mob/French Connection (and a lot of others but not available in English)

For the American Mafia in addition of the others already quoted you can add Crazy Joe wich is very good, Sugartime about Giancana & Philys McGuire or Teamster Boss about Jackie Presser (a lot of mafia characters in it)

Underbelly Files : Infiltration about 'ndrangheta in Australia and also the season 2 of Underbelly :Tale of Two Cities about Robert Trimbole
