Lol he worked at a grocery store and Scarpa put him in a bunch of his businesses to make money And maybe he let the mob work for him in a way. There’s no question Calandra owes a big part of his viewership to the fact that there was already a whole documentary done on he and his friends. And Franzese is in the same boat. He’s been doing national press for a long time. The first time I ever heard him (maybe 17-18 years ago) was when I was in high school and he would go on the Jim Rome show every year. And Jim Rome—who is in the top 1% of people who like to hear themselves talk—would give Franzese the floor for his whole 3 hour nationally syndicated radio show to tell his story. And then he wound up in a handful of mob docs. It’s like presidential primaries. Name recognition is like 85% of the battle. If Pennisi had been on Real Housewives of whatever he’d be getting 100k+ views per episode.

Interestingly in Calandras latest video he claimed Gaspipe Casso was behind the 1991 murder of Marc Goldberg. Apparently, Anthony Spero wanted Goldberg on record with him and asked Gaspipe to release Goldberg. Afterwards, Casso had him whacked. I really think Hootie thought he was gonna put out a few YouTube videos about selling drugs and running with wiseguys and the money and opportunity would start rolling in. The only problem is those videos were part of a larger group of videos in which Hootie was smacked out of his goddamn mind. And, not for nothing, but this is America—a lot of guys sold drugs. Your street story has to be pretty unique and newsworthy if you are going to profit off of retelling it. And even if you were that guy, being halfway in a nod while sharing those stories is obviously going to undercut your credibility.
