Fiumara used the bike to elude law enforcement.

He once traveled in the trunk of a car to defeat surveillance, according to an account provided to investigators by an informer. He also routinely drove the wrong way down one-way streets, traveled up highway off-ramps, regularly switched cars and even rode a bicycle sometimes traveling through parks into which cars could not follow to lose his F.B.I. pursuers, according to court papers.

Yes, that's why I mentioned him. Maybe they have been borrowing techniques from Sicily because the mobsters over there have been riding bicycles
and motorbikes since the 90s in attempts to shake surveillance. Giuseppe Dainotti was even killed on one a few years back.

Another possible example. Joey Lombardo used to ride a bike all around the neighborhood in Chicago back in the 90s/early 2000s. Though no one would ever confuse him for a yuppie lol.

DeSantis is a killer, eh? What hits was he involved in? I'm not familiar.
Nah it's easy to picture. Johnny Sideburns standing around waiting, on a hot sweltering August day on the Canarsie Pier, uncomfortable and overdressed for the weather in a jogging suit. Checking his watch every 15 minutes for over an hour, shaking his head each time incredulously, until DeSantis finally pulls up on a 10 speed in spandex and a helmet, out of breath, saying "Hey John how ya doin! I just broke a personal record! How about this humidity, huh?"

As far as the hits, he was going to be the designated trigger puller on the D'Arco hit until Al stormed out of the door and blew their opportunity. On top of that, he was involved in the hit of a union official they lured out to Jersey - I think John Morrissey maybe? And allegedly another one in Brooklyn but I can't recall the details on that, other than he was there and it was a Pagliarulo crew murder. DeSantis is a Brooklyn guy and I'm almost positive he was with that Pagliarulo crew who did not shy away from murder at all.

The bit about him writing a letter to resign and all that makes him sound like a weirdo but given who he came up under and the prison time he's served I highly doubt he's anyone to trifle with. Gonna go out on a limb and say he's a serious guy. Especially if we are to believe Pennisi's story about the transition and that in this day and age, they were actually prepared to take it to violence if the transition between them and the Bronx guys didn't go smoothly.

I wonder if he actually tried to resign from the mob or just that crew.

Just the crew. He didn't get along with Avellino and was placed in a different crew.

DeSantis is now the acting boss. Im sure Avellino was thrilled about that.

Thanks for the intel. Yeah if he's the proxy for Vic he surely ain't no pussy.

I would like to sincerely apologize to every Mafia Cyclist everywhere who I insulted in this thread. Never occurred to me that it might be a surveillance thing. Certainly can't tail a guy who hops the curb on his Schwinn and does a sudden U-ie on the sidewalk before zooming down an alley too narrow for the feds' cars but just the right size for a bike!

The feds clearly need to send agents out on bikes to keep up with these guys...

I know I'm late to comment about matty....

But I believe a huge reason he wasn't made was because he was very well known as a coleman. He was Nicky Barnes connect.
Is that how he got busted?? Thru Nicky flipping?? I thought I remembered Nicky wouldn't flip on Matty

I think it even was written how he changed his ways after doing the 20 year stretch. Obviously not to much but it is what it is. Very well respect ed non the less

Matty was a mid level junk dealer BUT the real deal was his older brother i think his name was frank he was the one who had the contcts to get the H.Even before matty went to prison he was already a kilo man (mid level). He meets nicky barnes in prison and when they get out they both hit the ground running.

Matty got caught because he started his own pipe line to thailand he would just send guys and they would fill their suitcases with heroin.Keep in mind this was the 70s so it was much easier to do something like that. His arrest had nothing to do with nicky barnes.

Yeah, I've seen Frank referenced as the 'brain' behind the Madonna brothers' early operations. Matthew did that long bid because an import route he set up by himself got busted. He partnered up with Genovese soldier Salvatore Larca on it. They were smuggling heroin from Bangkok to New York through Hawaii and California.
