Once the mills shut down Pittsburgh and Youngstown were no longer the cash cows they once were. Michael was always about the money.

Money...hungry yes - greedy...not from what I heard from maybe his closest associate at that time.
I wouldn't say that Michael "destroyed" his family as there wasn't much family business left to support a whole family.
Additionally if he was allowed to recruit new members who was he going to recruit?
Michael approached a young man in person and felt him out about being part of his Pittsburgh family.
This conversation took place in front of Charlie Murgie and Henry. Both Charlie and Henry objected and said this is no life for him.
