Apropos that era. Bill Bonnano said a few things. One that the families were all enormous compared to venen their 70s and 80s numbers and two that the Bonnanos at least had a social club or fraternal organization function wherein they made a lotta guys who were completely legit but were just loyal and from Castellmarese Del Golfo. So they made doctors and lawyers and even butcher's etc. On the basis of loyalty and common ancestry.

Joe Bonnano was a sentinmental traditionalist so you can see him totally being this way.

They also made a few guys in exile who were literally just their retainers in a mediveal sense.

Harry Aleman from the Outfit. First of all, I don't know if he was actually made because in researching the Outfit, it is not so "defined" like New York. it's a lot more vague. He was half Italian and a lethal killer & relative of Joe Ferriola. Maybe Aleman was made because Jimmy Marcello was made and he was half Irish (on his mother's side)? Another guy that I believe was half Italian that might have been made was Frank (The German) Schweihs. He was another killer who was close to Joe Lombardo (Grand Avenue).

Today, Some of the guys they make are ridiculous and should not be in the life at all . But , It's all about control usually . If they can't control a guy it doesn't matter how tough or stand up they are , Plenty of guys don't get made for that reason , If they think a guy can gain considerable power and influence and eventually leap frog them they won't even bother proposing him , There's a big fear factor with that reason alone among others .

I know a guy who was connected to the Lucheses through his family and had a lot of money rolling in.

He paid them a tax and then got as far away from them as he could as fast as he could.

He was out earning made guys twice his age and had zero desire to pay them or get indicted with them. He was exactly the kind of earner they'd love and well liked and had a decent last name.

He basically told them to fuck off and made himself scarce.

I know another guy in Philly who turned down being a driver for someone in their administration for the same reason.

He saw no point in sharing his money with them when he was better at making it than they were and going to prison for his trouble.

Exactly , The smart guys out there , Not all but most are definitely making money and doing good and don't need or want all the problems just to be made or to be close to any of these guys . Like Martino who got busted last week , That guy could run rings around all these guys when it comes to Sophistication and business etc.. But , The Mob , When he was made was still the most popular show in Town by far and 2nd to none to be made or to say your with so and so . Maybe today in 2019 he doesn't take the title or has second thoughts and like you said makes himself scarce etc etc ? But who knows

Yeah it's not only Italian professionals who turned their backs on the mob. But also Italian criminals too. The prestige isn't worth the headache or the bottom line.

The kid in NJ was making like 100k a week. I doubt Vito De Falco makes that in a year in bklyn.

You could be a star! Great “earner”. A “shooter”.... or both. And loyal as a mother - - - ker! But if they think that you have an independent streak, or that you’re TOO intelligent, they become paranoid, jealous, envious, etc.

MANY MANY solid guys that have been in this life have NOT gotten straightened out for that very reason.

Bosses don’t want guys who they think “out shine” them! It takes a guy who has real confidence in himself and his inherent abilities to propose a “Star”. Most are intimidated.
