Rankings aside, the way their org charts look, they played the Cosa Nostra them by having made men, which is needed when dealing with other families but in Chicago they made their own structure to do what they wanted and what worked best for them. Especially since guys like Gus Alex were so high up in that organization.
Yes I agree. Their core membership of "made guys" was always smaller than expected. However, they had many other Non Italian guys who were full fledged members of the Outfit, but not members of the National LCN, which didn't matter to the rank and file men. Many guys like Murray Humphreys, Gus Alex, Ralph Pierce, Les Kruse, Eddie Vogel, Davey Yaras, Lenny Patrick etc. were powerful men who even had some Italian guys working under them. In addition, the Outfit didn't have to "share" Chicago with any other Family, so man per man they did well. I don't recall reading about vey many "brokesters" who were middle to upper level guys in the Outfit years ago.

Gotta read Gerry Scarpelli's story - lots of guys who were rough and drug users were brokesters. Not in the upper echelon however.

Even in the 80s they probably only had 45-50 members at their largest.
Yeah, law enforcement reports in 1984 and 1987 had the Outfit at 46 and 51 members, respectively.

Their presence then was mostly through associates I guess correct? Because I’ve seen those early charts with a lot of guys listed....but a small core membership I see. Somewhat unique
Yeah, in terms of total manpower, they are comparable to other small families outside New York but the member-to-associate ratio is a little different.
I guess because of the media hype Chicago has from Capone and their spot on the commission, I always thought they were an equivalent to a NY family - among the smaller 3 at least.
Believe it or not.... 10 years ago the arguments were "whos stronger: chicago or nyc?"
I just don't know how anyone could think Chicago could be more powerful than NYC. 5 families to 1 lol and I live in Chicago area LMFAO. And in the Outfits state it's been in in the last 10 years
What exactly would Genovese do for Chicago by representing them??
And hoffa dealt with Bufalino who was strong with genovese ties. Aa well as close to tony pro w genovese.
Chicago had lotta strong fams under them:
- kansas (and casinos w them)
- milwaukee
- Cleveland (which was odd when Lonardo testified about there being the west coast commission... As well as making a trip to meet salerno)
Im assuming genovese fam strictly would pass a msg along. Rather then like a philly situstion where they had influence over

It was around the fam secrets time. So the outfit was the bedt thing since sliced bread.

They had many mutual and longstanding interests like in the unions, casinos, national bookmaking, car thefts, stolen merchandise etc. Back in the old days, they used to constantly back each other when it came down regarding commission matters, although sometimes they also stepped on each others toes

Didn't the Genovese at one point have an official title for the guy who would communicate with Chicago? The Messaggerro?
Also good to note that the Genovese boss Tommy Ryan Eboli had his son Louie Mooch working for the Outfit. Ironically Louie's Outfit connections were through his uncles on his mother's side the Ariola family - but I had to think Tommy Ryan was a prime factor in how Louie came to inherit the territory he did in Aiuppa's stomping grounds - Melrose Park.

According to Anna Tommy Ryan didn't give a fuck about Louie. When visiting Chicago he would meet her and give her a good tumble for old times' sake, but he would very rarely ask about or express any interest to see his kids.

Louie was more closely connected with Guido DeChiaro than Ariola. He inherited most of his vending machine routes from DeChiaro when he stepped back. DeChiaro was also related to Eboli, if I remember correctly.
That's right, Dechiaro took care of both Eboli bros and when their father got whacked, Ricca and Accardo allegedly stepped in to protect them or to assure them that nothing was going to happen to them. Guy Cervone used to be one of both Eboli's and Ariola's close associates. I also believe that this was one of the main groups, followed by remnants from the old MP crew and others, which was later responsible for the creation of the Grand Av crew

I think Eboli "took" Gudio's rackets - didn't inherit them. Louie's uncle Big Lou was a serious guy and their crew was run by Guy Cervone - story goes that they killed Gudio's son and took over once Ricca died, Aiuppa gave them the green light. The Melrose Park guys were put all over the place once Aiuppa got the mantle.

I've never seen any indication that Eboli "took" anything from Eboli. DeChiaro was close enough to Eboli that I wouldn't be surprised if he sponsored him into the Outfit. DeChiaro had a hold on most vending and pinball machines and routes in the western suburbs; it was well-known that Eboli would inherit them from him when he passed/retired/whatever.
As additional info, Tommy Eboli and Ricca’s distant relative Guido DeChiaro were also related thru marriage. Also when the Freak Amabile was sent to prison in 1967, Eboli took the position as supervisor in Stone Park and Northlake since at the same time Ariola had trouble with the law i think and Cervone was imprisoned, so no one took anything by force from anyone.

Eboli wasn't really respected or well-liked, at least when he was younger (late sixties, early seventies). Among other reasons, he did a little bookmaking at one point and stiffed some of his winning customers which obviously didn't go over well with some people. His age and position had something to do with it as well. I have a photo of him with a mustache but I think that file got corrupted. I'll post it if I can ever get it recovered.
