Mob rat testifies about beating at S.I. strip club in racketeering trial of reputed Bonanno family consigliere

A mob rat with a mean coke habit testified on Monday that accused Bonanno consigliere John Zancocchio beat him up in a Staten Island strip joint they once co-owned.

Former Bonanno associate Stephen Sabella was testifying in Manhattan Federal Court in the racketeering conspiracy trial of accused Bonanno crime boss Joseph Cammarano Jr. and Zancocchio.

He told the court that Zancocchio had taken a hefty cut of the proceeds of strip clubs they co-owned starting in 2000. Sabella said that by 2014, he, Zancocchio and other mob associates were operating Pulse Gentlemen’s Club.

Tensions had simmered between them for years and then Zancocchio became enraged by an unfounded rumor, Sabella testified without going into detail. A source familiar with the case said Zancocchio believed Sabella had acted inappropriately with Zancocchio’s daughter.

Sabella said that in the fall of 2014, he met Zancocchio, Joseph (Joe Valet) Sabella and Jerry Chili in the back room of Pulse. He said Zancocchio appeared angry, but still introduced him to Joe Sabella, to whom he was not related. After an awkward exchange of pleasantries, Zancocchio punched Stephen Sabella in the face.

“He continued to punch and kick me,” Sabella testified. “I just tried to fend off the blows.” The beating stopped when Chili yelled “Enough!” just as Zancocchio was about to drop a chair on Sabella’s head.

He was left with a bloody nose, black eye, fat lip and chipped tooth. But, Sabella said, “Being involved with organized crime, you don’t go to the police.”

“How do you feel about Mr. Zancocchio now?” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Swergold asked.

“I can’t stand the guy” Sabella replied.

After the beatdown, Sabella said he was frozen out of his legitimate and illegitimate businesses involving gambling, loan sharking and strip clubs. He testified that he lost about $2 million in an instant, destroying his marriage and leaving him in financial ruin. He started talking to the feds last year.

The beating is a key episode in the feds’ case against Zancocchio for loan sharking and other racketeering offenses. He’s being tried alongside Cammarano. Both men deny being gangsters.

A former Bonanno crime-family associate testified in Manhattan court Monday that he “can’t stand” the reputed mob consigliere on trial for racketeering.

Mafia turncoat Stephen Sabella griped that reputed Bonanno consigliere John “Porky” Zancocchio beat him to a pulp, cost him more than $2 million and basically destroyed his life.

Sabella, 52, described for jurors in federal court how Zancocchio — who is on trial alongside alleged acting Bonanno boss Joseph “Joe C” Cammarano Jr. for racketeering and extortion — came to the Pulse Gentlemen’s club he owned with Zancocchio in the fall of 2014 and assaulted him over a purported rumor Sabella had spread about Zancocchio.

“He punched me in the face. He continued to punch and kick me. I just tried to fend off the blows,” Sabella said.

The witness added that he was pushed out of the Staten Island strip-club business and all his other ventures with the crime family, costing him several million dollars.

“It was a disaster. A complete destruction,” Sabella said of his life at the time, which included having to sell his house and his wife divorcing him.

“I can’t stand [Zancocchio].”

Sabella said he went to the feds a year later, after he got beat up for a second time by a Gambino crime-family associate outside his home.

“I had enough,” Sabella said.

Sabella admitted that after he signed a deal with prosecutors in January, he wrote racist and homophobic posts on Zancocchio’s daughter’s Facebook page about her biracial daughter.

In opening statements, Zancocchio’s lawyer, John Meringolo, said his client isn’t a wiseguy and that he doled out the beating to Sabella not in furtherance of the Bonanno family but rather to defend his kid and grandkid.

Sabella’s testimony is expected to resume Tuesday morning.

I find it funny how Zancocchio awkwardly introduced Stephen Sabella to Joe Valet before initiating the beatdown.

I also noted a couple of discrepancies from the testimony. Probably insignificant, but I figure I'd mention them anyways. The 2018 court documents had the assault happen in December 2014 at Curves strip club. This testimony has the assault happening in Fall 2014 at Pulse Gentlemen's Club. Also, Sabella's testimony only discusses that Zancocchio beat him up, whereas the previous court records had both Zancocchio and Joe Valet beating him up.


What do you think of Zancocchio's chances at this stage? I haven't read much in the way of a full, Gerald McMahon-style ass-tearing into the informers by the defense attorneys as we might expect. Lovaglio and Sabella appear to be sticking to their stories, they haven't been caught in any embarrassing testimonial lies (yet?) and there hasn't been much in the way of brutal cross-examinations by the defense, although that might come later in the trial. I also find it interesting that Zancocchio admitted to the beating.

I forgot to mention it earlier by the way, but how stupid is it that Cammarano's attorney told the jurors that the Mafia didn't exist anymore. If the jurors have any idea about what's going on in their city, they'd know that statement is full of shit. It ruins Cammarano's credibility right off the bat.

Don't think that's official. In fact, I don't think Vinny TV's allegiance has been publicly declared by anyone. Neither him nor his acting capos were sighted at the 2015 meetups.
