I'm always open to constructive criticism. Designations aside, the point of that story (which I was the first and only to report) is that Sal Profaci died. Should I have referenced he's was inactive at the time of his passing, I probably should have. That's on me and it is valid to call me out on it.
I don't think anybody is "out to get me," and I'm obviously not perfect (reporting on this stuff is not an exact science). That said, I stand by what I have written and will always acknowledge if I've made a mistake (Papa Smurf Franco). I am proud of the fact that I've developed solid sources in four major OC areas (Detroit, Chi., Philly and NE) and that over the last decade I have been able to break some big stories. Guys like Jerry C and George A have taken an interest in my work and have mentored me and for that I'm tremendously grateful. Some of the vitriol on the message boards surprises me, but hey I'm a big boy and I'll absorb it and learn from the experience. Anybody can contact me and I'll respond (
Hoosierscott@aol.com).

Sigh.
So lets address this. Scott, most people, myself included,
want to like your work. We do. Its our passion and interest. You therefor get a willing audience, one that forgives errors and mistakes. We think you're a nice guy. We do, and we're tolerant of confusion, misunderstandings, informants, sources and the general common mistakes of any prevailing zeitgeist given to any different family/situation/era/consensus.
So that being said,
this is why the 'vitriol'.
Time and time again your 'mistakes' are to the sum of their parts,
not, mistakes (If you have the google box. You do, have the google box?).
You have a forgiving audience to say the least. Yet the commonplace and the severity of your errors exhausts patience and forgiveness of 'errors' and 'sources' beyond all normal indulgence.
Scott, off the top of my head, you posted Detroit had 50+ members. You were roasted and then offered apologies. Then we had KC which recently you kindly broke down the whole corporate structure of their 'functioning' family and now its Sal Profaci in which you're 'astonished' you'd receive such vitriol for 'simply not specifying' he was retired and the 'Carmine thing'? Well that was just a mistake...
Fool me once Scott, you've heard the line. This is the 'learning curve', this somewhat educated audience forgives mistakes, but yours are so continuous, consistant, easy to collaborate, rectify and NUMEROUS that well, your audience just loses patience.
Here it is: Detroit has 50 members, mistake? cool, forgiven. KC has a viable setup? Jeez youre pushing the line, Sal Profaci Columbo Capo and Carmine the Westisde Capo...Vitriol. You see how we got there?
Trust takes time to build and is easily lost. You lost the trust early and have been riding nice guy and journalist coatails ever since.
Rebuild the trust with non bullshit articles (with no 5 second google remedied mistakes) and we'll lose the vitriol. And maybe you'll start to rebuild the trust.
And maybe you'll sell more books.
People buy Volkman books
once, if you catch my drift....
