How sure are we Cali was boss? Pennisi cites him as boss. Capeci? I thought Jerry had him as UB.

Was/is there a consensus on his position?
From what I remember Capeci had Cali taking over Acting Boss position, not only in 2013 but again a couple years later. Again this was recanted a few weeks later.

He replaced Cali as underboss but is viewed as the real leader even if he doesnt have the title
The cali / Cefalu situation was just like the Crea / Madonna arrangement and both had official bosses rotting in prison doing life. Makes me think of the sopranos and the way Tony kept uncle junior as boss to keep the pressure off himself. Seems like the best way to run a family in some cases is to let your power speak louder than your rank.
Yeah and we know that Cali was paranoid of investigations.
Paranoia and fear can keep you safe like being scared and going to war for the first time. It keeps you more vigilant

JohnnyS wrote: Wed Sep 21, 2022 3:29 pm Not only did Capeci report it but its also in the Campos detention memo that Cali was the official underboss prior to his murder. In the sentencing memo Cali is described as a high ranking member iirc.
I'd forgotten about that, it's a good point. Presumably the government's identification of Cali's rank would come from information from within the Gambino family. I couldn't find the detention memo but I did check the sentencing memo and you're right, they describe Cali as a "high ranking member".

It looks like they got more than what was posted on the vault. Maybe they'll update it, but sometimes the FBI releases more to requesters than what gets released on the vault.
I just made a comparison. Every doc and photo in this article was in the file I uploaded from the FBI Vault. It doesn't contain any new information.
Let me fix that for you:

I just made a [REDACTED]. Every [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] in this [REDACTED] was in the [REDACTED] from the [REDACTED]. It doesn't contain any [REDACTED].
Well, here's what I have to say about that: The FBI can [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED} and [REDACTED].

To me that's as big as the Bellomo / Majuri relation.
What kind of relationship? I know Cali's mother, Agata Scimeca, was from Ciminna, but I never found any blood relation.
No idea myself -- it came up because they talked about Navarra's marriage to Catalano's niece.
