Colombo underboss Benjamin Castellazzo was living in a rundown trailer in New Jersey and claimed his wife was on food stamps.

Jack licavoli was the boss and was caught switching price tags on pants
I remember reading something about how when Frank Bompensiero was underboss in SoCal he shared a car with his daughter. An underboss. Could you imagine a 5 families underboss sharing a car with their kid? Maybe a Bonanno or Colombo UB but definitely not a Genovese, Gambino or Lucchese one.

You want it to be one way but it's the other way.

When I think of a mob wanna be, I think of someone who just so happens to have Gambino as their last name, and because of that act like they’re connected, and if you fuck with them you’re just “one phone call away from being whacked” even though the threats are always empty, and are never actually related to anyone from the Gambino crime family. That’s what I think of when I think of what a mob wannabe is
Jerry Colombo of South Carolina was a perfect example of that.
That the guy who was involved in those McDonalds lottery scams..?
Pretty sure he’s referring to him, I actually just watched that documentary about exactly this on Hulu. Pretty interesting stuff.
Yeah that’s him, interesting shit but Robin Colombo’s story doesn’t add up. Bear in mind she only knew him for a couple years before his death.

I think if throwaway was the phrases used instead of “wannabes” and “low lifers” I would have understood better what a wannabe mobster actual is. Although I guess what I defined as a wannabe could be grouped in as such as well. Dying to live up to the name of someone they aren’t related to, so I’m sure they’ll do anything some wise guy wants them to lol

A wannabe to me, when I was young = a guy with the uniform on, meaning the clothes and whatever, tough talk and driving his parents nice car around.

Looking the part but no way ever being the part.

When shit went down, never there, when real shit went down, c'mon.

When I was young hanging out in a parking lot or wherever, some real guys would grab us, yell at us and tell us like wtf is wrong with you.

Some "criminals" actually helped us kids.

Not saying that some of the kids weren't tough or capable, but if a real guy saw a kid that had other options, they didn't want them around and wanted to see them on the right path.

They would even make threats or actually grab you to make you listen.

If those guys saw a wannabe they wouldn't even talk to them and to use them is so stupid because they will for sure sing.

just my 2 cents
of course a lot of them sing...a new rat everyday

a mob wannabe is the kid or man who desperately tries to be around connected or made guys. desperate to be noticed and a lot of times will do outrageous shit thinking that will get them in. also a lot of times is the idiot no brain guys with no or little self esteem... a criminal will be noticed by mobsters and they will bring you around/ test you etc. the wannabe guys they see a mile away and a lot of times will use them to do shit they don't want to do. play them like a fiddle letting them think their in until their done with them. Labarca was real deal. the Gambinos at least in that area seem to stay away from those types. the Bonannos on the other hand have wannabees all over the place
So basically like that episode of Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where they have the run in with the mob, and Mac desperate tries to join the mob crew. But instead they make him clean the bathrooms, wash their cars, and call him pussyhands because he brags about having cat like reflexes lmao. That’s what I think of when you just explained what you explained.

All jokes aside, thank you for clearing that up. Because everyone else at least to me, were making it out to be like Italian guys in their 40’s with no real mob connects are wannabes because they’re still doing shit like being small time street peddlers, instead of expanding.
