Hello everybody
I was wondering if Giancana was made capo before or after the murder of Ted Roe. Was he a lowly made member when he was thrown in jail where he met Ted Roe, and they rewarded him with a "capoship" when he won the war for them? What's the timeline here?
When was Giancana made capo?
Moderator: Capos
Re: When was Giancana made capo?
I can't give you an exact date but probably late 40s from what I remember Antiliar and Villain posting.y9807047 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 12:44 am Hello everybody

Re: When was Giancana made capo?
According to one informant, Giancana was sponsored by Frank Nitto and Louis Campagna, and made just before he went to prison. He went to prison in 1939 and was released in 1942. He would probably need a couple years in a management position to prove himself, but not necessarily. The top brass of the Outfit went to prison at the end of 1943, so someone was designated the acting boss. Then from 1946 to 1956 Accardo was the day-to-day Outfit boss (but Ricca and Campagna outranked him) and from either all or part of that time Giancana was his underboss. Maybe there was an underboss before him, or maybe he was the underboss for the entirety of Accardo's rule. That's the information we have. We can only guess what his rank was when Roe was killed in 1951. Was he the underboss or a capo? We don't know.

That was an astonishing rise, IMO. I guess when he came out of prison with the Ted Roe information, he baited his time, until Accardo was settled in. Then he started a 6 year war/cold war with Bronzeville. During that he became Accardo's chaffeur and after his victory, he became boss. Did I miss anything?
Re: When was Giancana made capo?
I believe the case Giancana went to prison for in 1939 was the bootlegging case from Garden Prairie, Illinois which saw many northern Illinois men arrested.Antiliar wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 9:31 pm According to one informant, Giancana was sponsored by Frank Nitto and Louis Campagna, and made just before he went to prison.
