1960s Bonanno faction Buffalo ties

Post by B. »

Something crossed my mind a while back that I've never heard mentioned.

- It's well-known that Stefano Magaddino's cousin Peter Magaddino formerly lived in Niagara Falls before leaving and joining Joe Bonanno, becoming a key member of the Bonanno faction. This greatly bothered Stefano Magaddino, who already had other issues with his cousin Peter.

But beyond Magaddino:

- Charles Battaglia was originally from Buffalo before going to the west coast and joining the LA and Bonanno families. According to the Magaddino tapes, Battaglia maintained contact during the Bonanno war with a cousin who still lived in Buffalo. No idea if this cousin was a Buffalo mafia member / associate. Stefano Magaddino described Battaglia as a "cuckold".

- Carlo Simari grew up in Buffalo and still lived there during early adulthood. Anyone know more about his background and how he ended up with the Bonanno family? He appears to have moved to NYC and then the west coast, in which order I don't know given that Bill Bonanno and his friends bounced between both areas.

- The Cotroni crew (at least the leadership) remained loyal to Joe Bonanno until 1968 (and possibly longer, in secret). This included Paolo Violi, who may have technically started out as a Buffalo associate given he initially arrived to N.America in Hamilton and married into the Luppinos. One of Magaddino's complaints about Bonanno, too, was that he inducted a number of members in Ontario without approval. This may have been the induction referenced on the Magaddino tapes where Joe Notaro traveled to Canada and made some people. Even without these specific violations, Magaddino resented Bonanno's presence in Montreal given Buffalo's long history in Canada.

Just struck me as kind of interesting how some of the diehard loyalists in the Bonanno faction were not only outsiders within the Bonanno family, but at least a few of them came from Buffalo. Stefano Magaddino already had plenty of reason to be upset with Bonanno, but then you factor in that he had these Buffalo figures under him and even infringed on his territory, it makes sense why 75% of the Magaddino tapes are unhinged rants about the Bonanno faction.

Any other Bonanno faction members with Buffalo roots or ties? I don't know anything about Sam Perrone but assume he started in NYC.
