As a fisherman and active in wholesale seafood industry my whole life I can tell you the Mob does have a real influence from Maine to NYC/NJ still in My own life experience and I have first hand come in contact with it in several New England city’s but most heavily Certain New Jersey docks...Can tell you it’s still heavily ingrained and current today in 2020 (kickbacks and Cash usage fees Just to have product come over the docks)

Anyone else hAve anecdotes or experiences with the mob involved in fishing in the modern era? I personally don’t have anything against it because when you get to that area it’s just something that’s always been and always will be and if you sign up you know what’s gonna happen.

The fulton market is the obvious one that comes to mind.

Aside from that the Luke's Long Island crew tried to extort a restaurant in the fishing community of Freeport a few years back. The restaurant was called Hudson and McCoys, and it has since closed.

Funny little tidbit. Longtime Tampa mobster Al Scaglione, owned a fish camp in Ruskin, FL back in the 1960s. Rented boats to fish Tampa Bay. Always rumors of the mob involved in the commercial fishing industry in West FL, but never found much in the way of hard evidence.

On New Bedford, my great-grandparents immigrated there from Portugal in early 1920s. They owned a grocery store on Coggeshall Road, it's now the parking lot for Antonio's Restaurant. They moved to NJ in the mid 1930s.

New Bedford would have been Frenchman territory I think. You’re only 20 minutes from RI. Timmy Mello RICO case and tempest fisheries like I posted about before...honestly very surprised LCN hasn’t had more of a reportable impact there. Must be the Portuguese backbone, no need for men of honor and rackets covered by other gangsters. Just surprises me

Yeah Bedford is interesting. Does anyone know anything more on any Portuguese OC in area? Assumption is you just have some Porgtuese guys involved in crimnal rackets, not super organized and loosely afflilatted, and some guys like Mello who are directly connected to traditional OC. I'm not sure but he is out of prison by now. I saw online that his son was arrested in a Herion bust back in 2014. Maybe someone from that area can shed some light on what his into these days.

I made a post about Mello a while ago. I think he’s basically laying low. Still pretty young guy, late 50s early 60s. There was an article in like 2016 about local politicians refunding campaign contributions. Pretty sure tempest fisheries still exists. If he still has any permits which he must he can probably live off leasing the fish alone.

Thanks for post with link. Yeah he's got to be making a good amount of money in the fish business, alot of money in them fish.
