I'm surprised that Sal Mannarino was listed as #9 while John LaRocca wasn't listed at all. Go figure?

Back in the early 50's-60's, the Mannarino Faction of the family were much more powerful and connected than the LaRocca/Genovese faction. Only because the Mannarino brothers were in bed with Lansky and Traficante with the Cuban Casinos as well as the Calabrian N'DranghetaFriendofHenry wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 3:05 pm I'm surprised that Sal Mannarino was listed as #9 while John LaRocca wasn't listed at all. Gambino must not have been on the radar yet.

It's not a list of most powerful bosses, but the mobsters who played the biggest role in the illegal narcotics trade.
Re: Top 10 Bosses per Harry Anslinger in 1962
The Joe Bonanno summary is peculiar, he has him as a former Al Capone gunman, and his main crime seems basking in the sun.

I agree. At what point was Carlo strongest in NYC?

By the 1970s he seems to have been considered the top boss.
All roads lead to New York.

He was strong right after the Anastasia killing and had no heat on him till the Valachi hearings. Anslinger used to put out lists all the time along with constant press releases, he may have mentioned Gambino elsewhere.

To Everyone: Santo Sorge very, very underrated. Probably a "man of two worlds," a conduit for international Cosa Nostra. Deep figure.

Re: Top 10 Bosses per Harry Anslinger in 1962
maybe he was big in narcotics but not in the mafia hierarchy, in sicily was not so important, and there is no way he was more powerful than joe bonannoBeatiPaoli wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 7:31 am To Everyone: Santo Sorge very, very underrated.
