Chicago Outfit, Early 1970s Chart "Teaser"
I am in the process of making an Outfit chart for the early 1970s. It will have a listing of members and important associates of the Outfit as well as their residences, Outfit controlled or connected businesses, and Outfit hangouts and other frequented places. It has been a slow process gathering all of the data but it's going at a steady clip. I was able to make a very rough "teaser" map to share with you guys. This particular "test" chart was mostly created from data available in the Juice Racketeers booklet. Parts of it are pictured below. Blue "pegs" are indicative of an Outfit presence while red "pegs" are indicative of substantial Outfit influence. The majority of the information in the finished product will be culled from available FBI and CCC documents, newspaper clippings, and other available publications.
One thing that is immediately noticeable (to me anyway) is how much "less" of an influence the Outfit had in the suburbs at this time. They certainly had a presence but prior to the 1970s, many of their operations and rackets were closer to the city but as the decade progressed and more and more of the traditional Outfit neighborhoods were changing over to black or Hispanic as Italians moved west, their influence became much greater in the suburbs. By the mid-eighties, the vast majority of the Outfit's operations were headquartered outside of Chicago proper and practically all of the top bosses resided in the suburbs. So not only was the early seventies a period of transition for the Outfit's leadership and structure but it was also one for their sphere of influence. Now, this is just an observation by me so feel free to disagree but we will see if it changes as I collect more information. Note: I did not have much data available for the Heights at this time.
The finished product will be much nicer looking (hopefully with photos), I just wanted to be able to give you guys a general idea about what I'm looking to accomplish here. Hopefully, I can make similar maps for different time periods but we will see how this one turns out:
Chicago (Immediate Area):
Cicero and surrounding suburbs:
Western suburbs:
Northern suburbs:

IT IS DEFINITELY GOING TO BE A LOT OF WORK - BUT YOU ARE UP TO THE TASK.

Thanks, FoF. Were you around Chicago in the 1970s?FriendofFamily wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2019 12:31 pm IT IS DEFINITELY GOING TO BE A LOT OF WORK - BUT YOU ARE UP TO THE TASK.

Awesome effort and I can't wait to see the finished product!
Question: Does each "peg" have a certain radius? For example does it cover four square blocks, half a mile or is it just noting that particular area?

Sometimes a specific block, sometimes a specific location. I will have more details in the final draft.

The only top level type Boss that I can think of from research who never lived in the suburbs was Joey Lombardo. He refused to leave his area in the City. All the other top level Bosses from the 1960's and 70's all lived in the Suburbs well before the 1980's. As far as Mob operations, It does seem like there was more of a shift towards the suburbs during the 1980's. Either that, or the Outfit simply started losing power slowly during the 1980's because the 1990's was a disaster for them.

I second that.
There you have it, never printed before.

Yes, I should have mentioned that most of the bosses did move to the suburbs prior to the seventies. It was just bad wording on my part that made it sound otherwise. What I intended was for people to see that most of the top guys (not just the bosses) and the majority of Outfit operations had been relocated to the suburbs by the late eighties.Confederate wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 2:06 am The only top level type Boss that I can think of from research who never lived in the suburbs was Joey Lombardo. Just as a random aside, Angelo LaPietra was actually an example of a guy who moved back into the city, as I believe he lived in Cicero prior to building his fortress in the Bridgeport neighborhood.

During the 1970's My association with Chicago was limited - mostly telephone calls setup through the Cleveland/Akron Group, when I needed some things from Chicago, like for example: Remote Car Starters and other things...Snakes wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2019 12:38 pmThanks, FoF. I'm sure you found this to be true, but it seemed as though River Forest, Oak Park, Elmwood Park & Melrose Park seemed to be the popular spots in which to reside for many of the Top Outfit Guys in the West during the 1970's.Snakes wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 5:21 amYes, I should have mentioned that most of the bosses did move to the suburbs prior to the seventies. River Forest: Ricca, Accardo, Blasi, English
Oak Park: Giancana, Battaglia, Spilotro (before he went to Las Vegas)
Elmwood Park: Cerone, Gagliano, Messino
Melrose Park: Auippa, Nicoletti
Guys up North like Dominic DiBella lived in Glenview and Joey DiVarco live in Lincolnwood which I believe are North Suburbs.
Cicero was probably also much nicer during the 1970's so it would make sense that Angelo LaPietra lived there before he went back in the City. Do you know when he moved back into the City?

This is Angelo "The Hook" LaPietra Home as it is today. I am by here everyday. I took this picture myself.
A relative of his lives there now.

His daughter did live there, I'm not sure if she still does. LaPietra moved into the Bridgeport house in 1977.
