Anthony Luongo

Post by slimshady_007 »

Anyone have any info on Luongo besides that he was acting boss and that he got clipped by Amuso and Gaspipe? Was his murder sanctioned by Tony ducks? Did the feds ever find out who directly was involved in the hit? Luongo’s murder is fascinating and im surprised it’s not talked about too much considering he was an acting boss being killed.

From what I remember Luongo was never an acting boss. He was a captain at the time of his death. Years later Crea Sr. inherited his crew from Sam Castaldi. Luongo was seen as boss material by a lot of people in the family and he was close to Vincent DiNapoli and some other Genovese guys. His murder was sanctioned by Corallo because he was seen as a threat to the future administration. Amuso and Casso took care of it. Other alleged participants were Dom Carbucci and Bobby Amuso.

Yeah, I do not believe Luongo was ever acting boss. After Amuso was imprisoned it was D'Arco, DeFede, Crea, and Daidone as acting bosses.

Thanks for the correction. However, it true Luongo was next in line to be boss, after Corallo was sentenced? I remember i read that somewhere.

I believe he was rumored to be in the running for boss but never actually took over. Amuso and Casso saw him as a threat to their own ambitions and possibly convinced Corallo that he had to go. Whether they did or didn't, there wasn't much that Corallo could do about it as he was about to go away for life.

I also seem to remember something about Amuso being Corallo's top choice all along but I'm not entirely sure. Maybe B, Pogo, CC, or others can weigh in on that.

Apparently he was the favorite to be appointed, Amuso and Casso got wind of it and clipped him thus spinning the family into a downward spiral with those bloodthirsty nut jobs.

Selwyn Raab wrote that Luongo was killed because "Tonny Ducks" was "believed to have briefly considered naming him as his successor." Amuso and Casso believed that Luongo might be jealous of the guys from Brooklyn and he might try to undermine them. It was always a mystery why Corallo chose Amuso as boss. In fact, and I forget where I read it, "Tom Mix" Santoro was supposed to have said to Corallo something along the lines of "I hope you know what you're doing, those Brooklyn guys are nuts."

Supposedly Casso was Corallo's favorite for the job, but he turned that down in Amuso's favor. The decision to kill Luongo was made by the administration shortly before the conviction. During that time Christie Tick was consigliere and was in Corallo's ear to put his boys in charge after they get sent away. Luongo was seen as a stand up, but ambitious guy who can gain enough support if he decided to make a move. I doubt at that time Amuso & Casso had enough clout to pull it off on their own without getting the okay from the administration. I had a few files that had some info on the issue, only managed to locate one of them.

IMO anyone would have been better than Amuso or Casso

I was under the impression that Luongo was in line to be boss after Corallo,
because the East Harlem/Bronx faction was always the historical Family powerbase.
As a result, Casso and Amuso killed Luongo on their own to ensure that they would get
control of the family. I do remember Funari politicking FOR Vic and Gas.
And Santoro advising AGAINST the two. I don't remember reading that Ducks
ordered or approved killing Luongo. I could be wrong on the last point.

The Jaguar tapes clearly have Ducks talking about killing
made members that were dealing drugs. Could it really be
possible that Ducks did not know how big time drug dealers
both Vic and Gas were?

Absolutely possible. There are other examples. Castellano was unaware of the fully involvement the Gotti crew had in the heroin business until the famous tapes came out and if we beleive Bonanno, he wasn´t aware of Lilo Galante´s hands in the heroin trade up in Montreal.
There you have it, never printed before.

I've always found it weird that Ducks said that. Vic and Gas were arrested for heroin smuggling only a few years earlier.

Plus Tom Mix and Ducks himself have done time for drugs.

I really think " dealing drugs" means literally like, street corner dealing. Like street retail... not the big time stuff....
