During the 1980 run up on Gold Prices to $800 an ounce. Gold was supposed to be shipped (non-declared) as cheap Jewelry into the USA from Italy through NY/NJ and then through Akron/Canton Ohio Airport on it way to San Francisco and melted down. They would use groups of 3 women posing as Jewelry Salesman to move the Gold through the Airports. It was supposed to happen on a monthly basis.
Has anyone Heard or Read about the Operation either with Italy or New York/NJ people. I wonder if this was just Gold or were the Stops for other reasons such as Heroin. Was the Gold another form of Payment for some illegal activity other than just Money Laundering.
