Gene Gotti, brother of mob boss John, finishes 29-year prison term this month

If the late John Gotti’s long-jailed brother finds the 21st-century Mafia unrecognizable later this month, he knows where the blame lies. Gene Gotti, behind bars since 1989 for running a multi-million dollar heroin distribution ring, is set for a Sept. 15 release from the Federal Correctional Institution in Pollock, La. The Long Island father of three, now 71, wore a white jogging suit and cracked wise about his upcoming prison time when surrendering in the last millennium at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse.

As I said several times on this Board in the last few years - he got 50 years - he's out with 18 years of parole left. He phucks up in anyway it's back to the can until he's 90. It's your move Gene - whatcha going to do?

I love how Bruce said Gene would've made it without Gotti being his brother. Was he made before John became boss?

Gene was made before John was even made.

Yes I think Gene is done with the life, but these guys have LCN in their blood, so you never know. Facing about 18 more years, it would be foolish after 29 years in the can already. But not to accept the 7 year plea deal was foolish to begin with. But he was just following orders. I wonder if John would have ordered a hit on his brother?? It looked like Gene was out on bail at the time.

Good article but the mob’s downfall is a bit exaggerated in the article. Lcn is in a better state now than what it was in 20 years ago. There’s plenty of rackets on the street.

In no way, shape or form is LCN in better shape today than it was in the late 90s.

Just think of how many families outside NY have basically fizzled out since then. And how many capable older gangsters in NY have died.

Correct. In 1998 you still had families or ramants of families active (in varying degrees) in Detroit, Buffalo, KC, Pittsburgh, Tampa, LA, Cleveland, Scranton, St. Louis, etc. That is pretty much all gone now. The remaining families like Chicago, New England and the DeCavacantes were larger and much more active organizations. The NY families still had their grips on various unions and industries back then and were generally more intact organizations. Plus of course generational attrition wasn't as bad back then and you still had a lot of the old neighborhoods still around.

If he'd of taken the 7 plea in '89 he would've been out in the late 90's....and more than likely copped a 30 then and still have a decade left.
Like someone said....it's in their blood.
Still, what a horrific waste of your life.

Not even close. The last 20 years have been a steady and sharp downfall which will only continue. The last standing groups will be the New York 5 who are almost a shadow of themselves right now. It's a natural progression. Anyone wanting to join LCN today in 2018 is delusional and out of their mind.

I used to suspect the NY5 might be around forever. Now I'm pretty convinced that they'll fizzle out after the guys born between 1950-1960 start dying off.

In the 1990’s almost every family’s boss was in prison and the fbi had a hard on for the mob in nyc like no tomorrow. Nowadays the fbi has shifted focus towards terrorists and the mob has bosses functioning on the streets. Barney has been on the street since 2008 and dom has been on the streets since 2011. The gambinos have rly bounced back since the 90’s. Back 20 years ago junior and other idiot gotti’s were destroying the family’s legacy. Nowadays dom, frank, and lorenzo have given more respect to the family’s name. There’s also not as many fbi squads assigned to the 5 families which helps the wiseguys in a way. From what i see, some families r doin much better in 2018 than what they were doin 20 years ago. Certain families like the bonannos and the decavlcantes of nj r in worse shape today, but in general the mob is doin better.
