Gigante & New England

Post by Costigan »

I was re-reading Selwyn Raab's "Five Families" & came across something interesting. According to Al D'Arco, when he met with some Genovese people, Jimmy Ida told him that Vincent Gigante had chosen the new administration in the Patriarca family. I don't doubt Gigante had considerable influence in the NY mafia, but could this be true, that he picked a different families admin? If so, who were the people he chose? Thanks...

Seems crazy and against the rules (shouldn't they vote?) but he did almost the same thing in Philadelphia according to Phil Leonetti.

The Westside allegedly had a tremendous influence in a lot of families, but with New England, Philadelphia and Buffalo especially.

Angelo Lonardo, and I think Fish Cafaro also, stated that from the 70's on the Genovese family took 'care' of all the families in the east and took potential problems to the Commision. They also said that Chicago took 'care' of all the families west of the Mississippi and had their own sort of Commission were they dealt with issues and that they only took problems to the official Commission if there was a problem between a family from the West and a family from the East.

At the time the Patriarca family was in turmoil with with most of the leadership under indictment and two factions vaying for control. if I remember right a war almost broke out. Not sure who exactly he picked but from the time frame it would have been Nick Bianco as Boss, Frank Salemme as UnderBoss and either JR Russo kept the Consiglieri spot or he was replaced by Charles "Q-Ball" Quintinna.

The New England family was real close with the Westside. I could see him doing that. I still wished I could find out more about Patriarca and what started his rise and how in the hell he was close with New York being that he was born in Worcester and cut his teeth on Federal Hill in Providence. Same goes for Nicky Bianco, I think he was born in NY but somehow had some sway in Federal Hill as well. It's the most confusing family I've seen in trying to get information that far back.

It was the same thing. Scarfo was made boss with the blessing of the Genovese family. Probably the last time any boss had such far reaching influence.

I said almost because Gigante let Scarfo pick his own underboss & consigliere opposed to naming an entire admin.

The cases are different: in Philly the genoveses wanted to operate in atlantic city so istigated Caponigro to kill bruno and after testa was killed one year later scarfo become boss because was friend of bobby manna aka the genovese nj boss; in 1991 after Mercurio flipped and recorded the famous making ceremony in 10989, Patriarca jr that was a weak leader can't dodge the war between the boston and providence factions. Nicky Bianco was a former joe gallo crew member,if gigante choosed him nothing changed because Bianco was soon arrested and the Salemme took the reins but the war continued.

The Genovese wanted Scarfo to be boss after Bruno was killed, it was less about Atlantic City and more about having a Genovese aligned boss in Philadelphia.

Scarfo may have got to pick his administration but he still had to get the OK from NY to demote and promote his administration and even his Capos. This must have been a more recent developement as don't think Bruno was under NYs thumb to this degree.
