Has Whitey's reputation been blown "way out of proportion?" My own belief is that Whitey was not the nationwide criminal that the media and government made him out to be...

He wasn't nationwide, more statewide. He was easily the most powerful OC figure in Massachusetts at one time, but he was still pretty insignificant compared to guys like Gigante and Castellano. Although he did murder a businessman from Oklahoma I believe, his influence didn't spread beyond Worcester.

"Most powerful" OC figure in Massachusetts?????????????????????????????????????????? Maybe the most notorious but powerful? More power than the Angiulo Brothers, Larry Zannino, Adolfo Bruno (who was a Capo in the Genovese Family) etc? I don't doubt that Bulger was a feared guy and had some power but I believe his power is way overstated.

Bulger for a brief period had control of the numbers rackets when he gave the info that brought down the North Boston LCN crew. So he did move into North Boston on the numbers rackets and put up resistance when guys from North Boston ran to RI for help about the situation but it was for a short period only. In the media.. this makes you king of the hill and most powerful etc.

Not in the 70s, but in the 80s, after the Angiulo brothers and Zannino went down and the Patriarca's were weakened, I'd say he ascended the ladder. He couldn't be touched because of FBI protection, while they were constantly going over the Italians.

Yea he only came close to being the most powerful once he helped take down the Angiulo's and Zannino. That and the infighting with the LCN in Boston/Providence during that time too didn't help and only shot Whitey up the ladder.

Before then, no way.

This cud. Not be more wrong . Mayb from 1990 to he went on the run . But immediately following the Anguilo reign was a bad time for him . They guys in the renegade faction were no joke and had no respect at all for whitey. They basically told him he had southie and Dorchester that was it . And those guys were as serious as cancer

some people like to inflate him and others like to downplay him. i don't remember how much money he supposedly owed to the mob, i wanna say 250k but i very well may be wrong, but it seems like that was always the excuse used as to why the mob didn't kill him. personally, i think they were worried about the consequences.

people seem to like to think of these types of hypothetical gang wars as some sort of revolutionary war type scenario where both sides just line up and shoot at each other until one side is wiped out. in reality, a small group of determined and crazy guys are not to be overlooked, countless examples of small crews who nobody dared to mess with because of the mindset, not the numbers. law enforcement considered whitey to be not only the top dog in boston as far as oc is concerned, but in all of new england in the late 80's/early 90's which pretty much says it all as far as i'm concerned!

Yes when Whitey become the man for Winter Hill he supposedly had to take on Howie Winter's 250k debt owed to Gerry Angiulo. I'm wanting to say they paid some on it, just enough to keep them off their ass. Not sure what it got to or dropped to over the years though.

Whitey once threatened a Boston Globe reporter who wrote a critical article on his brother Billy. Made sure the guy knew that he knew where he lived, and the names of his wife and kids. The report went to Larry Zannino, who more or less told him that he couldn't help him when it came to Whitey Bulger. I'm not saying that the mob steered clear of him, but they definitely didn't bother his operations on his turf. He was a psychopath who happened to also be a gangster.

I could believe that, especially if it was in Southie. You let Whitey go to the North End and try to strong arm somebody and them run to Zannino and I would say we would have had a different scenario.
