Pete Casella
Who in the Genovese family got Pete Casella the pass after hitting Phil Testa? Why was he only banished from Philly?

I’ve heard Carmine Battaglia but I don’t think the one who got Casella a pass was ever confirmed
Battaglia was still around, he would pass in Feb 1893. However, I think that people may be confusing the multiple times that he got a pass for Antonio Caponigro

Your first question answers your second question.Browniety86 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 11:11 am Who in the Genovese family got Pete Casella the pass after hitting Phil Testa? Why was he only banished from Philly?
An unknown member of the Genovese family who had done time with Casella got him a pass for killing a boss without permission. In lieu of death he was banished to Florida.
I would guess the person was a well respected captain. You’d have to have some real juice to prevent retribution for breaking a cardinal rule of Cosa Nostra at that time.

I reread this and realized maybe you didn't understand that his banishment went hand in hand with being shelved and that Casella was warned if he ever returned to Philly he would be killed.

No I was meaning why wasn't he killed with Narducci, but I guess that went along with me asking who got him the pass...johnny_scootch wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 7:30 am I reread this and realized maybe you didn't understand that his banishment went hand in hand with being shelved and that Casella was warned if he ever returned to Philly he would be killed.

According to Leonetti, it was Gigante who ultimately made the decision when Casella was forced to step down and placed on the shelf. I'm not sure who else advocated for him but Casella had longstanding ties to Genovese and Gambino members going back even before his narcotics incarceration. I've always guessed it was someone he did time with but that wasn't his first introduction to members of those Families. He was a well-connected guy.
