Sicily cocaine haul: Italian police seize two tonnes of cocaine floating in the sea

Italian police have seized around two tonnes (2,000kg) of cocaine that was found floating off the coast of Sicily, in one of the country's largest ever finds of illegal drugs.
Some 70 waterproof packages were found held together by fishing nets and equipped with a tracking device.
Police put the haul's street value at more than €400m ($440m).
Officers believe the drugs were dumped at sea by a cargo ship in order to be recovered later.

Or the Violis through Colombia with Carfana. You just need an operative present to make sure your shipments get to where they are supposed to.

I don't think that italian oc have the resorces to pay and distribuite such quantities.

the Mazzei is the other official Cosa Nostra family in Catania, the Laudani's are basically an arm of the Santapaola's you're right, they are all involved in drug trafficking but mostly at distribution level... if somebody is able to import so much drug at one time are the Santapaola's or the Cappello's;
in this case the organization needed a boat to recover the drug and it tells very much that local people are involved at least at logistic level

it's different, the drug was intended for the Spanish market and in fact among the people arrested there was a spaniard... the drug belonged to a confederation of gangs according to police, all close to the colombians, but it doesn't mean that the colombian cartels have the manpower to distribute it by themselves, they always need local gangs... the italian OC are billionaires according to the assets seized, all the major groups have enough money and contacts to buy 2 tons , especially Ndrangheta and Camorra who have been involved in that field (cocaine) for decades

There is no way its the cartel without local mafia families , you can't do that there , Spain is very different than Sicily/South Italy.
