I agree with Anastasia's points...

1.

One thing I don't necessarily agree with, however, is the idea that if the mob loses one money maker, they suddenly look to other previously untapped income sources. If there's money to be made somewhere, and they're able to capitalize on it, they're likely already doing it.
Well if your Making x and then it drops to z, you may need to find other income streams makes sense , really most of the scams are old just someone finds a new twist to it .

Also very ironic merlino going to prison for what is now legal , if Florida legalizes sports betting merlino should get immedlity released in my opinion .

3. Whatever effects legalized sports betting has could indirectly affect loansharking by less gamblers borrowing money.
Couldn’t it have the opposite affect? More people betting on sports leads to more people borrowing money.
Not sure. I would think the players who bet with the mob on credit are the more likely to borrow money from loansharks, as opposed to someone who takes the trouble to go to a casino with cash in hand to place a bet. But some of them might.
Good point. However, I think some of the more connected loan sharks can take advantage of the increase in gamblers (and gamblers debt) that legalization will cause.
These guys should be handing out business cards at the bookies.

Well when you have a monopoly, a seemingly inexhaustible supply of money to draw from, no need to show results or a profit or even accomplish anything, etc, you have it made. There is a reason for the old phrase: "Good enough for government work."

It's also better to hit the bookie because you're not paying taxes.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....

You cant bet on credit with legalized Sports Betting. BUT LCN lets you bet on credit. So they will still be in biz. They could loose allot of gambling business since allot of Gambler have just been betting online with their credit cards in small amounts. That is a large chunk of the sports book. But the "hands on" guys on the street for collecting and paying out LARGE bets will still be kept busy loan sharking for the degenerate gamblers that need credit because they are always in the hole. Weekly collections could pick up. But illegal bookies could see a dramatic decline in the Standard online bet. It will have an effect on the LCN Sports Books.

It is one thing to get a drink or two 'on the arm' as Pacino/Lefty said in the movie Donnie Brasco.
BUT to run up a multi thousand $ bill with an entire crew and walk out is low life bullshit IMO.

i dont believe everything you hear, unless you been there when it happens, then its all internet, or poolside fodder...salt in delray, joey would go every sunday during football, 15 20 deep, and they paid..maybe he aint the one paying, but they paid..point is, dont believe everything you hear..they aint beating restaurant guys..unless they looking to send a message, and those days are long over...now, dont get me wrong, maybe there is some isolated incidents, i have never heard them, but maybe there are..but these guys aint walking into the greenhouse this afternoon looking to order shrimp cocktails for the whole upper deck, then walking out, not happening
