News piece on Chicago

Some old news footage in the 11+ min video (link below) but nothing really new.

Stories 2 Tell: What Happened To The Chicago Mob
Author: Jim Williams
January 27, 2019

(CBS) — It can be argued that at one time the Chicago Outfit was the most powerful crime organization in the country. From the shores of Lake Michigan to California, Windy City mobsters controlled gambling, loan sharking, labor unions and even politicians and judges.

The Outfit backed up its enterprise with ruthless muscle, leaving a trail of murders from Chicago to California. Rivals were ambushed, blown up, stabbed to death.

“This will be a slight exaggeration: there wasn’t a week that went by that I don’t think there was a body somewhere,” says former federal prosecutor Gary Shapiro.

Gangsters weren’t just killing each other. Businesses were extorted. Pay up or else.

“They set businesses on fire. They blew them up. They killed people. It was hard to do business if you weren’t paying off the mob,” says former federal prosecutor Andrea Zopp.

Once a weekly occurrence, mob hits today are rare. The Outfit’s stranglehold on Chicago has weakened considerably.

This is the story of how it happened. (see video)

Well that news piece pretty much sums up the Outfit of today (whatever is left of it) compared to years ago. It was funny watching Frank Calabrese Junior giving his Mob Tour without a worry in the world. In addition, I'm not opposed to anybody trying to make a living, but it is also amusing at how Frank Junior was so fucking traumatized by his evil Father that forced this horrible life on him against his will, yet he wants to relive it everyday on his tour. I honestly don't think he is a bad guy. It may be therapeutic for him in a sense.

I wonder what ever happened to the $600,000 he stole from his father?

He talks about it in his book. He blew it on vacations, drugs, and bad business investments among other things

You make a good point, but one of the twisted results of trauma is that the victim does try to relive it, sometimes in fucked up ways. I knew of a little kid whose family home caught on fire and he started setting fires on his own not long after. I'm sure we've all known women with daddy issues who chase dudes just like their father, the cycle of abuse, etc. The mob tour seems like a pretty healthy way to earn a living off his name and not shy away from his family past. Can't comment on him other than that. Curious how many people take the tour.

I think these guys like the Calabreses are maybe our last hope of clearing up a lot of questions. I might take the tour and pay him some Xtra money for a little Q&A if possible.

You don’t have to pay extra for q&a it’s part of the deal

I've never been on the tour, but I'd like to take both his and Binder's. I know he used to be a cokehead but he just seems a little more genuine than some of the rest of these rats running around. Maybe I'm way off, who knows.

Like Franzese, or even Leonetti, guys who get into the thing because of their fathers tend to be a lot more honest about their reasons for ratting and their lives post organized crime

It's cracking me up picturing a bus full of random tourists who don't know a thing about the mob asking if he knew Al Capone then you asking really detailed, complex questions with a pen and paper in hand
