The Five NY Families and Jersey by the Numbers

Post by willychichi »

Anyone know when Capeci wrote this, what the Gambino's numbers were then and how accurate those numbers were and what they are now?

What’s Left of the Mob

From Gotti to Gigante, the names atop today’s Mafia org charts are old ones. But the times have certainly changed for New York’s biggest families—and not for the better. Mob expert Jerry Capeci, who writes the “Gang Land” column for the New York Sun, looks at the state of the four other clans in the city’s infamous Five Families, plus the Newark-based DeCavalcantes.

It is from 2005. In a separate piece he gave the Gambino number as 200 members if I remember right.

I've seen the similars numbers floated by numerous journalists/researchers during the period and by that I mean ~ 2001-2007. If I have to take a guess currently the families sit have ~25% less members compared to Capeci's numbers. Colombos are the exclusion they probably have close to double the figures given in the article. Anyone knows what's the latest official estimates we have?

Michael DiLeonardo, a top captain who acted as an aide to the Gambino administration, claimed that the Gambino family had ~250 members circa 2002, with a cap of around ~260. He is the most reliable source when it comes to these estimates given his position prior to being shelved. Something to keep in mind when considering Capeci's estimates and LE estimates.

Since he flipped in 2002 wouldn't his info have been factored into the 2005 estimate? A lot of Gambino members cooperated during this time. In addition to DiLeonardo there was Borghesi, Fappiano, DePalma, D'Angelo and Cassarino. With all of those informants it is hard to imagine almost 70-90 members going unidentifide by LE.

Yeah, the feds had 192 known members in the 2000 Isgro case. I don't think 60-70 members were flying under the radar by the early 2000s

They put the Genovese around 200, and the Lucchese's and Colombo's around 100 but didn't provide any numbers for the Gambino's and Bonanno's. Let me see if I can sign in and copy that part of the article.
