That's my recollection. He thought to be the one who might take over but the gruesome twosome had him killed before it could happen.

I've seen a documentary that said he was acting boss during the trial. Always wondered if it was true. That would kinda throw out the whole Ducks picked Casso who turned it down narrative and give it a Gas and Vic took over theme.

If I remember correctly, he never took over but was hit because there was talk that Ducks considered making him boss. It didn't take much with Vic and Casso.

Interested by the Tramunti era. MF has him listed as acting boss in 1969 with the top spot remaining vacant. FBI report from October 1972 identifies him as the acting boss but by October 1973 his is listed as the incarcerated boss. Again in January 1977 he is listed as the incarcerated boss and Corallo is named as acting. This would suggest that he was confirmed as boss around late 1972 or sometime during 1974 and, judging by the fact that he was still boss in 1977, probably remained so until his death in 1978 (as he had the right to unless he was deposed by the Commission or incapacitated to the point where he could no longer make the decision - a la Joe Colombo). There's another report from 1974 that the acting boss (who I think was identified as Andimo Pappadio but I can't remember precisely) consulted with the capos on decision making and then informed Tramunti in prison, though Gribbs had no say on ultimate say on what went down (similar to the Peter Gotti situation). So, when it comes to Corallo, he seemed to not only be acting but also de facto boss of the family from 1975 until Gribbs' death before likely being confirmed as the official boss.

Also, I'm sure in D'Arco's book it mentions Casso being bumped up to capo as part of the deal with Corallo to make Vic Amuso the boss, and he then served as consigliere before being promoted to underboss to replace Macaluso. If I remember correctly it happened when D'Arco and Pete Chiodo being promoted to capos, with Chiodo taking over Casso's crew
