24 July 2018 - Mafia, new repentant in Palermo: Mammi started working together, arrested in December
There is a new collaborator of justice in Palermo: it is Domenico Mammi considered the right-hand man of Sergio Macaluso, one of the bosses of Resuttana, also repentant.
The operation that brought Mammi to prison is the one that last December eliminated the mandates of San Lorenzo and Resuttana, with twenty-five people arrested. The carabinieri of the provincial command of the Sicilian capital carried out a restraining order issued by the investigating judge of the court of Palermo against 25 suspects, held in various capacities responsible for mafia association, extortion consummated and attempted, damage, abetting, receiving, all committed with the aggravating of the Mafia method and purpose.
On that occasion it was also confirmed the historical traceability of Resuttana's mandate to the Madonia family, highlighting the role played by Maria Angela Di Trapani, wife of the historic boss of Resuttana, Salvino Madonia.

His father was practically a collaborator at the time, but even after the kidnapping he did not go back and decided to cooperate, the decision to kill the boy was taken out of impulse as soon as the news came out that he collaborated, I believe that neither the father of the boy thought that his son would be killed, especially in 1995 where the Sicilian mafia was divided between terrorism and remain in silence after the prison of the Riina.Hellboy 17 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 1:36 pm I can’t comprehend why the dad still flipped. 25 July 2018 - Mafia, extortion and intimidation of the Syracuse fruit and vegetable market: 19 arrests
The hands of the mafia on the Syracuse fruit and vegetable market. A total of nineteen people have been arrested by state police. The suspects must respond, of criminal association mafia aimed at extortion, trafficking of drugs, thefts in homes and farms.
The investigations began in May 2015 and allowed to verify the operation in the territories of the south of the province of Syracuse Giuliano clan, headed by the boss Salvatore Giuliano who, thanks to the intimidation force exercised by its members, would have affected the whole fruit and vegetable market.
The investigation focused on the figure of the boss, on the men of his close trust and on the progressive rise of the group to a real mafia clan who would be able to acquire the monopoly in the production and sorting of fruit and vegetables grown in the many greenhouses present in those territories. Giuliano would have succeeded in securing the operational space to dominate unchallenged in the territories of Pachino, thanks to the ties raised in the context of organized crime with the Hat clan Catania and the pact of non-belligerence signed with the thigh rival of the Trigila.
The investigation activity carried out by the police station in Pachino, has documented, in January 2016, the damage with a fire, aggravated by the mafia method, of a means used for the collection of waste owned by the company that had the contract of this service in the Municipality of Pachino. The main source of income of the group, as ascertained by the investigators, was derived from the conditioning of the rich and flourishing fruit and vegetable market which has always constituted the most important economic activity in those territories.

25 July 2018 - MAFIA IN SIRACUSA: "Here we command, tell Messina Denaro."
"Here we command, tell to Messina Denaro." The Syracusan bosses talk to each other and do not want to lower their heads even in front of what is considered the new boss of bosses.
They started a business, "La Fenice", which imposed on Pachino farmers to give only to them products of their greenhouses and so traders and large distribution centers were forced to buy from this sole company.
So the Giuliano clan, according to the DDA of the Catania Procura, controlled and conditioned the fruit and vegetable market in the area, thanks to its intimidating power. This is what emerges from the operation of the Phoenix phoenix of the Syracuse mobile team, which carried out an order for precautionary custody of the GIP of Catania against 19 persons investigated and ordered the seizure of the company 'La Fenice'.
Thanks to this tried and tested mechanism, the suspects claimed payment of a "commission", calculated as a percentage of the crop produced and sold to small and large retailers, which constituted the fee for the alleged contractual mediation activity carried out between producers and traders.

02 August 2018 - "Close to Messina Denaro", 60 million kidnapping for the entrepreneur Giovanni Savalle
60 million euro were seized from the tax-tax expert and entrepreneur operating in the hotel and real estate sector, Giovanni Savalle, considered close to the fugitive boss Matteo Messina Denaro.
The nucleus of economic-financial police of the Palermo finance guard and the Ros of the Carabinieri have executed, in a joint operation and coordinated by the prosecutor of the republic of Palermo, a seizure order, issued by the court of Trapani - criminal section and prevention measures.
Among the assets seized in Savalle, tributarist and entrepreneur, there is also the structure of the former hotel Kempisky, luxury resort of Mazara del Vallo. The building and the entire area with land and swimming pools under seizure were from Savalle.
The activity, managed by a company totally unrelated to the survey, however, remains in operation. The company substituted in Savalle has leased the structure from the judicial administrator to whom the fee is paid.
"We emphasize Giovanni Savalle's non involvement with the protests and the heavy suspicions raised. Our client has nothing to do with the mafia Matteo Messina Denaro has ever been consciously contiguous mafia and mafia of which you have never sought support or support either explicit or implicit, for anything. He has neither entertained nor entertain any relationship with assets of illicit or illegal formation or provenance. And with regard to the old proceedings for which he is called into question, he can not fail to notice how, in large part, these are issues that are now defined ". So in a note the lawyers Francesco Messina and Antonino Carmicio who assist the accountant Giovanni Savalle to which the carabinieri of the Ros and the Guardia di Finanza coordinated by the prosecutor of Trapani have seized assets for 60 million euro.
«Savalle remains at the disposal of the investigating bodies to whom it will give full cooperation and any necessary clarification for the purpose of the ongoing investigation - the lawyers add - But since every prevention measure is based on the suspect investigative, we await the development of the procedure confident, certain of the good faith and the legitimate conduct of our client. Anxiously waiting for justice to speed up its course so that doubts and suspicions advanced on its person and integrity, are fully dispelled by the judiciary magistrates. "

Police say Sicily gangsters crushed limbs in insurance fraud
FRANCES D'EMILIO, Associated Press
Aug 8, 2018
ROME (AP) - Sicilian gangsters dropped 25-kilo (55-pound) cast-iron weights on the limbs of drug addicts, alcoholics and other vulnerable people to obtain insurance payments for fake car accidents worth hundreds of thousands of euros, police said Wednesday after making 11 arrests in the case.
Among those arrested was a nurse at a Palermo hospital who Italian police allege procured mild anesthetics from her workplace to tamp down the pain.
The weights, like those used in gyms, were violently dropped onto an arm or leg, which had been immobilized by being held between blocks of cement, prosecutors alleged, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Sometime ice was the only thing used to try to deaden the pain before the limbs were crushed.
Police said electronic surveillance of some of the suspects' locations picked up the screams of those being mutilated, in private homes or warehouses. They released a video of some of the intercepted conversations indicating the ring had accomplices in several of Palermo's clinics and hospitals. In one call, one suspect told another that both an ambulance and a wheelchair would be needed the next day.
After the limbs were smashed, the injured were taken to hospitals where accomplices in the scheme would handle their cases, authorities said.
Rodolfo Ruperti, who heads the Palermo police operations squad, said the suspects would go to the Sicilian capital's train station to recruit drug addicts, alcoholics, the mentally disabled and poor people desperate for money. "They were attracted by the mirage" of a lot of money, Ruperti told RAI state TV.
But in reality those who agreed to participate in the scheme by having a leg or arm or both smashed, generally received only a few hundred euros (dollars), while the gangsters kept hundreds of thousands of euros in insurance payments, the authorities said.
"They were both accomplices in the scheme and victims," Ruperti said of those who agreed to have their limbs broken.
A smashed "arm and a leg" could bring as much as a 150,000 euro in claim payments, Ruperti told The Associated Press in a phone interview.
Investigators are trying to determine if the Sicilian Mafia had a hand in the fraud racket, Ruperti said.
Cosa Nostra often has accomplices or associates in local institutions including clinics.
Ruperti said just how much money had been defrauded in total isn't yet known because investigators are still trying to determine how many years the racket has been going on.
SkyTG24 TV said some 70 people are known to have had limbs smashed in the racket.
The investigation was triggered by the discovery, in January 2017, of the mutilated body of a Tunisian man on a Palermo street. Initially presumed to be victim of a road accident, he was later determined to have died of a heart attack suffered after having his limbs deliberately smashed.
Ruperti said the racket employed a network of accomplices, including those who agreed to falsely say they had witnessed a car hitting someone.

12 August 2018 - Municipalities dissolved for the mafia, in Corleone and Palazzo Adriano, return to the polls on 21 October
Extraordinary electoral round for the Municipalities dissolved for mafia infiltration and commissions: Sunday 21st October we return to the polls in Corleone and Palazzo Adriano. To establish it a decree of the Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini, sent to the regional councilor to the local Autonomies.
Also scheduled the date of a possible runoff: Sunday, November 4.
The two Municipalities of Palermo will go to the polls - as required by law - in an extraordinary turn since the commissioner who are subjected is expiring in the second half of the year, which is why the new municipal elections will take place between October 15 and December 15th.
The Municipality of Corleone, a land notorious for having given birth to the bosses Bernardo Provenzano and Totò Riina, was dissolved in 2016. At the time, he was Minister of the Interior, Angelino Alfano. The competition for the construction of a multi-purpose facility near the sports field ends up under investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office. A municipal employee, custodian of the sports field, was also arrested, Antonio Di Marco, indicated by the investigators as the new head of government. Within the structure, even mafia summits would have been held and in some interceptions it would have referred to the possibility of putting pressure on the municipal offices to pilot the works. Mayor was Lea Savona, elected with the center-right and in the file of the dda also ended his brother John, for some interceptions in which he was appointed by the head of Chiusa Sclafani, Vincenzo Pellitteri, who called him "a great friend of ours."
For "ascertained forms of conditioning of administrative life by criminal infiltrations", the City Council of Palazzo Adriano was dissolved the same year (2016).
In the meantime, the shadow of the mafia in political life is hard to disappear, as demonstrated by the recent commissions of San Biagio Platani and Mistretta.
The commissioner of the Municipality of Agrigento, dissolved due to suspicions and infiltrations by our own, had already been in the air for months after the arrest of Mayor Santo Sabella, which took place last January as part of the maxi blitz "Montagna".
An investigative commission has instead settled in Mistretta, on the appointment of the prefect of Messina, Maria Carmela Librizzi, to investigate whether there have been effective mafia conditioning in the assignment of contracts for the redevelopment of the works of Fiumara d'Arte, in the territory of Tusa.
The provision stems from the investigation proceedings of the operation «Concussio» in which the city councilor, currently suspended from office, Vincenzo Tamburello, has been involved in prison since 20 April. If ascertained, it will proceed - as in previous cases - to the dissolution of the City Council.

Re: News from Italy
14 August 2018 - The hands of the mafia on the fruit and vegetable market of Palermo, 150 million confiscation
The hands of the bosses on the Palermo fruit and vegetable market. The Dia of the Sicilian capital has confiscated assets for 150 million euros to Angelo and Giuseppe Ingrassia, both of 61 years, considered by the investigators neighbors and contiguous to ours. Many real estate assets have been confiscated including buildings, apartments, land, shops and warehouses, company shares, trucks, cars and motorcycles, and various banking and financial products.
The confiscation order originates from investigations that have made it possible to collect a series of elements that make emerge the infiltration of "cosa nostra" in the fruit and vegetable market both directly and by means of nominee, through the influence of the mafia family of the Acquasanta, governed by the Galatolo clan.
It emerged that the owners of various stands would have been profound connoisseurs of the method of operation of the fruit and vegetable market, they monopolized the activity through the use of services provided by the cooperative "Carovana Santa Rosalia", which would deal with the sale of goods, porterage , parking, transport and sale of wooden boxes and packing material.
Numerous clues were also collected, also confirmed by the statements made by some collaborators of justice, which led investigators to look for a real "hidden director" able to predict the price on the market of the goods sold, check the road transport to and from western Sicily and the main supply centers and to manage additional activities related to internal trade.
All this would have led to a serious distortion of free competition, guaranteeing to the criminal organization huge profits through only apparently lawful activities.
To reinforce the framework of the accusations also some ordinances issued long ago by the investigating judge of Naples against a series of suspects, including Gaetano Riina, brother of Totò, able to control the road transport from and to the fruit and vegetable markets of Fondi, Aversa , Parete, Trentola Ducenta and Giugliano to the Sicilian markets of Palermo, Catania, Vittoria, Gela and Marsala.
Moreover, Giuseppe Ingrassia was considered by the court of Palermo as "socially dangerous" and therefore subjected to special surveillance by state police for four years.
Today the director of the Dia Giuseppe Governale will be in Catania where the Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini will visit the company Geotrans s.r.l., in judicial administration, confiscated by Dia in 2014 and which continues to operate on the market with excellent productivity profiles.
Mafia at the fruit and vegetable market of Palermo, Coldiretti: "Prices of fruits and vegetables leavened by 300%"
Fruit, vegetables and vegetables are underpaid to Sicilian farmers and production costs are not covered either. From the field to the table, prices rise by 300%. "For the effect of monopolistic control of the markets operated by the underworld in certain territorial realities." This is what Coldiretti says in relation to the anti-Mafia operation of the Dia di Palermo on infiltration of organized crime in the fruit and vegetable market of the Sicilian capital.
"The total business volume of mafias in the agri-food sector has risen to € 21.8 billion - again according to Coldiretti data - with the food chain, its production, transportation, distribution and sale, which has become one of the areas priority of the underworld's investment. The mafias influence the agri-food market by establishing the prices of the crops, managing the transport and sorting, the control of entire supermarket chains, the export of our true or false made in Italy, the creation abroad of production plants of the Italian sounding and the development of new retail networks. In this way the underworld is appropriated - reads the note of Coldiretti - of large sectors of agro-food and the profits derived from it, destroying competition and the free legal market and stifling the honest entrepreneurship, but also seriously compromising the quality and safety of products, with the indirect effect of deeply undermining the image of Italian products and the value of the Made in Italy brand ".
"The agromafie must be contrasted in agricultural land, in the secret rooms where prices are determined, in the opacity of the bureaucracy, in the distribution of products that travel thousands of kilometers before reaching the final consumer - says the president of Coldiretti, Roberto Moncalvo - but also with the transparency and information of citizens who must be able to know the history of the product that arrives in the dish ".

Re: News from Italy
14 August 2018 - Bones broken and scam to defraud insurance, a track leads to the mafia
The involvement of mafia exponents, but also requests for help to Cosa Nostra of people who while participating in the scams to insurance have felt in turn cheated by the leaders of the band.
These are two of the topics - deepened in the pages of the Giornale di Sicilia today on newsstands - that the investigators are trying to deepen in the investigation of the gang Palermo (60 investigated in this vein) that organized false road accidents splitting the bones of needy people , who accepted in exchange for money, and which also involves a doctor and a lawyer.
After the decisions of the investigating magistrates of Palermo and Termini Imerese who have left the arrested suspects in jail, apart from two (one under house arrest and the other with a signature obligation), the investigators are trying in the slums of crime tests to give certainty to the picture indicative that goes beyond the data acquired.
Some criminal groups gave the "sharing" to the practices of false traffic accidents (or gave them in exchange for high percentages on the liquidation of insurance companies) to Michele Caltabellotta, the "professional" mind of the gang. Some insurance experts, reading in the newspapers that Caltabellotta would belong to their category, wanted to point out that the man is only a road accident consultant.
In the arrest decree of the prosecutors conducting the investigation, the mafia is mentioned three times: "In addition, the Santoro (suspect, ed) mentions clearly in the presence of some 'characters' who could react violently to the failure to liquidate the accident , thus demonstrating the existence of a 'further level', (presumably belonging to organized crime mafia) as the final recipient of the majority shares of income paid by insurance companies.
And again: "The presence of a further 'level', capable of exerting a very strong pressure aimed at not giving up the lavish gains deriving from the organization of false claims In this regard, particularly significant are the last conversations between Calvaruso, Mocciaro, Portanova (investigated, ed), during which the latter appear in turn 'terrorized' for the possible violent reaction of those belonging to the aforementioned 'upper level' (likely composed of members of Cosa Nostra) ".
And then when the prosecutors linger on the figure of the suspect Antonino Di Pasquale indicating "its superior 'criminal thickness', the delinquent credit that enjoys within certain 'qualified' organized crime contexts, the circumstance that the subjects interviewing with him they turn to him and call him 'uncle' as a sign of obsequious respect ".
The mafia, therefore, tend to find out the investigations, took part of the revenue of false traffic accidents? The hypothesis is that in order to work freely the band paid for the money on the sums collected by the insurance companies.
But within this context there could be more. Some mafiosi may have been questioned by victims, initially complacent, who after suffering injuries and fractures were not satisfied with what was achieved. The mafia gang mentioned in the decree is that of Brancaccio, district, however, where many of the false incidents have been created.
