Just the way he had his favorites and the ones he didn't like, it was weird as hell. And yeah I never thought about that but he sounds a lot like Rico and Morris and Connolly and those people.

And Roemer admitted Richard Cain, a corrupt police officer, an ex-con and a murderer, was one of his best friends. Very strange for anyone, especially a serving FBI agent.
I say it half in jest, but if Roemer presents a relatively positive view of a mobster in any of his books, that mobster is probably a CI.

That could very well be true. In addition, Roemer, deep down inside, wanted to be fuckin' Outfit Guy. He wanted to be just like Tony Accardo, his true idol.Ed wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 7:14 pm And Roemer admitted Richard Cain, a corrupt police officer, an ex-con and a murderer, was one of his best friends. His friendliness with the guys is how he got his info according to the Rat Trap articles. Shooting the shit with Sporting Goods is how he got most the info, as he says he never really asked direct questions. I've never read his books so I don't know how he described the guys but either way it's how he got the job done.

Read one of his books and you'll really see what we're talking about concerning his fascination with certain Outfit guys. It wasn't just to get information, it was more, Trust me.DPG wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 7:46 pm His friendliness with the guys is how he got his info according to the Rat Trap articles. I believe you. Have you read any other books by agents or FBI directors? Would be cool is Conley wrote a book but considering the fact that he wouldn't testify I doubt it will ever happen. Didnt the States Attorney (Wayshek?) write a book about his time in Boston?

Great info, buddy. I knew about Culotta but not most of that. Thanks...!Ivan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 8:11 amB. if you're interested I know more about that movie than anyone in their right mind should, so feel free to inquire about it. It's 90% real but there are a lot of composite characters (Remo is Aiuppa and Balistrieri, for example) and combination scenes (e.g., the scene toward the end where the guy is whacked in Costa Rica is a combination of Jerry Lisner getting killed by Frank Culotta, and an FBI theory about Jay Vandermark getting killed in Latin America that turned out to be false. BTW the hitman in the scene is played by... wait for it... Frank Culotta. Yes, he got paid to re-enact one of his own murders. Nice work if you can get it!)B. wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 12:35 am Great timing. I re-watched Casino recently from start to finish for the first time in over a decade and had a newfound love for it (I used to think it was one of the more boring of the classic mob movies). Been wanting to dig more into the grit behind the scenes, so thanks for this.
You know that the politician played by Dick Smothers was Harry Reid in real life, right?
Also, the Japanese dude whose plane they sabotaged was a gentleman by the name of Akio Kashiwagi in real life. They call him "K.K. Ichikawa" in the film. He later got offed by the Yakuza with a katana, because why not. He also had a run-in with The Donald at one point.

One of my all-time favorite mob movie scenes is when "House of the Rising Sun" starts playing (one of my karaoke songs, cliche as it is) and eventually goes into the meeting in the back of the court room. I find myself saying "Why take a chance?" in my head all the time. Up there with "Now youse can't leave" from BT.
Re: Lefty Rosenthal and Outfit murders from the 1970s.
Casino is one of my all-time favorite movies ever since seeing it the first time in 2004. I have a weakness for the glitter and glamour. Joe Pesci's best performance imo. Also the Remo character came off as very authentic. Scorsese has a thing with portraying mob bosses in his movies. Seems like he has had a run-in with some of these guys as he seems to know exactly how they are.
Re: Lefty Rosenthal and Outfit murders from the 1970s.
I also think of Remo as being part Buccieri. One thing that is kind of weird in Casino, was that in the beginning where they're explaining how the Tangiers got their money through the Teamsters they say Detroit was part of it. But actually Detroit had no part of the whole Argent deal. They had their own stuff going on in Nevada(Aladdin and The Edgewater in Laughlin) but weren't part of The whole Glick situation.Ivan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 8:11 amWell, actually, you're the one who pointed it out, I just pointed out that you pointed it out.
There's a passage in Casino (the book) where an agent kind of scoffs at the idea of Lefty being nonviolent, saying that it's impossible to be around the kind of guys he hung out with as much as he did without getting some blood on you yourself.

There is a guy with glasses that appears every once in a while I'm pretty sure is supposed to be Joey Lombardo. He doesn't have any speaking lines that I know of.

Re: Lefty Rosenthal and Outfit murders from the 1970s.
I noticed that too. Among all the ancient 70 year old bosses there's a young guy who looks like the Clown, which fits the story and timeline perfectly. I think that's definitely who it's supposed to be.
I just fired up my Casino mp4 and screen-captured this for everyone's edification. The younger guy standing on the right. (The guy with his back turned is Carl DeLuna; I don't know if the other two are based on anyone real.)
The real thing for comparison:
