The Mob and Drugs?

Post by aleksandrored »

Guys I always have doubts about this because every place seems to say something different, the mafia always got involved with drugs? there are books / documentaries that say that it was probibido and was more accepted in the decade of 80/90, others say that it was always accepted, others say that only some bosses like Paul Castellano, did not admit it, in the end since when the mafia messes with drugs ?

Believe your avatar has a very early arrest for heroin.

Really? I did not remember that, but I was referring to what the Mafia thinks about drugs, if the mythology that they did not sell drugs is false or true.

Pm wiseguy. He can give you a list of all the cases involving drugs that pretty much puts the whole 'no drugs' rule to bed. It's been argued over for years but there's really no debate that the mob did sell drugs.

I can't remember the exact date but I remember some one posting on rd about Lanksy having a very very early arrest for heroin conspiracy or possession, and how a lot of guys were 'knee deep' in drugs going back a long ways. And his arrest was like pre 1925 early. I want to say 1916, but I don't know if that's right or not. Not sure of Meyers birth date.

This is one of those dead horse topics. Even when there was a nominal ban, there were enough examples pretty much across the board to show it was often ignored. Some bosses had no problem with it and were up to their eyeballs in drugs. Some allowed it off the record with the understanding if those dealing got caught, they were on their own. And even those so called hard-liner bosses had examples. Castellano allowed Patsy Conte to deal and took drug money from him. Chin (who supposedly had a pact with Castellano to kill those dealing) not only had been charged with trafficking years before, but made Bellomo (a known trafficker) his acting boss. Same with Corallo, who complains about dealers on the Jaguar bug, but then allows Amuso (a known trafficker) to take over. And as for Accardo, people have given several examples of guys dealing (and not in secret) while he was boss - Buccieri, Torrello, Infelise, Iacullo, Pape, etc.

They've always been involved in drugs, and they still are today probsbly even more than ever. Especially with weed and pills... that's where the money is at now.. thing now is you probably got just as many made guys using the drugs as selling them.

Who was the guy that said he smoked weed everyday and they used it to question his memory of events? Didn't it have to do with NJ?

That was DeCavalcante Capo Anthony Rotondo.

Yeah he's the one that pretty much said they didn't care if the thing about the acting boss being with a black guy was true or not, but it helped their case.

Honestly these days I really wonder how many of these guys are hooked on pills especially since the north east is in the grasp of a huge heroin/opiate epidemic.

I stumbled across a report from 1982 called Organized Crime in the United States: A Review of the Public Record. It's several hundred pages long and pages 220 to 394 go into fairly extensive detail about LCN drug trafficking from the early years up through the 1970s. Interesting stuff.

I've been trying to find the actual link again. I have it downloaded on my phone but no idea how to put it on the forum. It's a big document. It's partly why I included the name of the full name of the report, ie in case anyone could locate it. It was compiled under the supervision of G. Robert Blakey, who of course drafted RICO.
