Re: News from Italy
28 June 2018 - Mafia, blitz against the clans between Agrigento and Palermo: new arrests for 10 bosses, seven companies victims of extortion
In February they had been released after the judges of the Review had canceled for lack of motivation 13 precautionary measures claiming that there was a lack of motivation and that the judge had limited himself to make a copy and paste of the arrest request filed by the public prosecutors.
The decision had made free mafiosi and extortori agrigentini return, but in recent days the Supreme Court annulled them. So a blitz took place this night, a follow-up to the "Mountain" operation against the gangs of the province and which led to the arrest of ten bosses plus a residence obligation for an eleventh suspect.
Over 100 carabinieri of the provincial command of Agrigento have again arrested ten members of the summit of families of Cosa agrigentina but also of Palermo. The blitz, ordered by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Palermo, was shot in the middle of the night with the aid of a helicopter, of dog-loving units and of the squadron of the Carabinieri, hunters of Sicily.
The operation has inflicted a further blow to the current assets of our own, allowing us to further document extortion against 7 companies. Numerous searches, in search of drugs, weapons and explosives, are still ongoing.
At 3 am, the blitz was shot. A helicopter watched from above, quickly making the shuttle between Raffadali, Favara and San Biagio Platani. Over 100 soldiers, also supported by cannon units for drugs, weapons and explosives, have simultaneously burst into villas, apartments, country houses and farmhouses. In just a few minutes, the handcuffs of 10 dangerous subjects were taken, almost all at the top of the families of "Cosa Nostra" in Agrigento and Palermo. The accusation is of "mafia-armed association" aimed at extortion.
The operation arose from the investigations carried out by the Carabinieri of the Agrigento Operations Department in the period February / May 2018, which allowed to acquire further evidence, confirmed by the statements made by a new collaborator of justice, who started to give his contribution right after being arrested as part of the "Mountain" operation.
New elements have emerged on the roles in the mafia families and also other episodes of extortion, attempted and consumed, to the detriment of a total of seven companies of public works of great value. The investigation had already documented the existence of a new mandate, the one, in fact, of the "Mountain", from which the whole operation takes its name. The new mandate would be the result of a choice made in 2014 by 37 year old Francesco Fragapane, arrested during the first blitz, considered head of the same mandate, son of Salvatore, the latter already head of the province of "Cosa Nostra" Agrigento.
THE INQUIRY AND THE FIRST BLITZ. After the blitz Montagna, breaking a wall of historic silence, for the first time, dozens of merchants and entrepreneurs of the province for years victims of the racket, have begun to collaborate with the investigators making names and surnames of the debt collectors.
A paradox happened in a province that was the scene of the largest anti-mafia operation ever done in the area. Fifty-seven arrests, with bosses of the first magnitude ended up in the cell together with debt collectors, gregari and prestanomi.
They called it "Operation Montagna" because the summits of all the clans of the mountain area were disjointed.
Costs like that of Raffadali, Aragona, S. AngeloMuxaro and San Biagio Platani, Santo Stefano di Quisquina, Bivona, Alessandria della Rocca, Cammarata and San Giovanni Gemini have remained "orphans" of their leaders, like Antonino Vizzì and Luigi Pullara, until release from the Review.
Paradoxically, however, Giuseppe Quaranta, ex-capomafia of Favara remained in jail and, from the end of January, began to collaborate with the magistrates. His statements and admissions of the victims of the lace are new elements used by the Prosecution for today's arrests.
The investigation, coordinated by the Procurator Francesco Lo Voi, tells of a mafia that speaks an ancient language, perpetual traditional organigrams, does business with drugs and extortion and boasts of existing "since the history of the world".
But it does not disdain new business. Wherever there are public funds on which to put the clan's hands running. The investigation revealed that, in fact, the Cammarata capomafia Calogerino Giambrone would try to infiltrate the management of a coop, the San Francesco of Agrigento, which deals with the reception of migrants.

Re: News from Italy
28 June 2018 - Process to the Brancaccio mafia: 53 defendants and only a contractor civil party
Out of twenty-three victims of extortion, only one was a civil party in the trial of the mafia clan of Brancaccio, in Palermo. Today the preliminary hearing began before the GUP Guglielmo Nicastro and only one entrepreneur - defended by the lawyers Ugo Forello and Valerio D'Antoni - will be injured in the process.
"It is simply a shame for the entire city of Palermo that after many years of struggle and contrast to the racket has returned to the year zero - say the lawyers - the incessant action in the last decade of the anti-racket federation and Addiopizzo committee has shown that we can oppose, siding with the rules, the healthy business culture and correctness ".
In front of the gup there is, among the defendants, Giuseppe Lo Porto, Giovanni's brother, the humanitarian operator who was kidnapped by Al Qaeda and killed by a drone in 2015: he is accused of having managed the case of the gang.
There is the alleged head of office Pietro Tagliavia, 40, already convicted of mafia and "son of art", given that his father is Francesco Tagliavia, to life imprisonment for slaughter. Next to him, there are also his presumed trustworthy men like Claudio D'Amore and Bruno Mazzara, while the task of managing the apparently clean business, that is the business ones, would have been entrusted to Francesco Paolo Clemente, Francesco Paolo Mandalà and Gaetano. Lo Coco.
It is to them three - again according to the reconstruction of the investigators - that dozens of nominees, mostly Sicilian, would refer to the business of industrial packaging, with a monopoly position in the island and dominant nationally.
Among the defendants also the alleged summits of the mafia families, historically governed by the brothers stragisti Giuseppe and Filippo Graviano, or Giuseppe Caserta and Cosimo Geloso and, for Roccella, Giuseppe Mangano, Giuseppe Michelangelo Di Fatta and Antonio Marino.
Of course, the clan would have also made investments in drugs, imposed carpet lace (a dozen extortion episodes reconstructed during the investigations), even during the neighborhood parties.
The gup must also decide on the positions of Saint Carlo Di Giuseppe, Giuseppe Ficarra, Salvatore Giordano, Giovanni Lucchese, Giovanni Pilo, Giacomo Teresi, Vincenzo Vella, Giovanni Vinci, Giacomo Clemente, Pietro Clemente, Pietro D'Amico, Salvatore Graziano, Marcello La Cara, Roberto Mangano, Elio Petrone, Maurizio Puleo, Filippo Rotolo, Maurizio Stassi, Francesco Tarantino and Stefano Tomaselli.

02 July 2018 - Trafficking in migrants, links with the mafia and jihadists: blitz with 17 stops in Palermo
Illegal immigration, trafficking of war weapons and recycling of diamonds, gold and cash. These would be the illicit activities of a criminal group of 17 people.
The Carabinieri of Palermo have executed a decree of arrest, issued by the District Anti-Mafia Prosecutor of Palermo, against the seventeen suspects. According to the investigators, the group would refer to suspects residing in Palermo.
The investigations also revealed that those involved would have had contacts with us, to whom they sold arms, and with the Albanian paramilitary group "Nuovo Uck" linked to jihadist circles. The criminal group would also have been active in the provinces of Sondrio, Como, Pordenone and Siena, but also abroad in Switzerland, Germany, Macedonia and Kosovo.
INQUIRY. Two criminal groups managed, in exchange for money, the traffic of migrants coming from the Balkan area. One was headed by some Kosovars, both in Italy and in Switzerland, the other was made up of Italians and Macedonians.
This is what emerged from the investigation of the Palermo dda. At the head of the Kosovar association was Arben Rexhepi who recruited the migrants to be sent, across the Balkan route, to Italy. The accomplices - Driton Rexhepi, Xhemshit Vershevci, Franco and Tiziano Moreno Mapelli, Ibraim Latifi and his partner Jlenia Fele Arena - took refugees to Switzerland by car.
Thanks to the protocols of international cooperation with the Swiss cantonal police and thanks to the collaboration with the staff of the Informative Unit of Venice, two distinct episodes of illegal entry of migrants in Italy were documented in 2017. To reach the border, they paid 3,000 euros each. Arben Rexhepi, during the Balkan war, was part of a paramilitary group of the Albanian KLA.
The second criminal organization, managed in Palermo by Fatmir Ljatifi and Giuseppe Giangrosso, recruited Slavic citizens to enter Italy with false employment contracts. The injured Dario Vitellaro had found a compliant company capable of assuming fictitiously foreigners to get them a residence permit for work reasons.
ARMI TRAFFIC One of the arrested by the DDA of Palermo ran a thriving traffic of weapons of war. This is Fatmir Ljatifi. For the investigators he had the availability of kalashnikovs and bombs that he would also sell to a cell of fighters of the paramilitary group "New UCK", protagonist in 2015 of an attack committed in the Macedonian town of Kumanovo.
The investigation was coordinated by the Palermo prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi and by the pm Gery Ferrara and Giorgia Spiri. Seven months ago, Ljatifi was stopped by the Carabinieri in Villabate on his return from a trip to Kosovo. The material that was kidnapped - cell phones and PCs - led investigators to discover arms trafficking and the recycling of diamonds and money loot of thefts and robberies. Videos of commercial diamonds, ink-stained money and weapons traded abroad were seized at the suspect.
Furthermore, on 16 November 2016, 27 September and 20 October 2017, three meetings were documented (two of which took place in the outlet of Dittaino and one in Palermo) between Ljatifi, another arrested, Giuseppe Giangrosso, and a catanese mafia also investigated for robbery, trafficking in drugs and weapons.

02 July 2018 - Blitz against the Riesi clan: 25 arrests, light on mafia murders - Names and photos
An anti-mafia blitz in Riesi led to 25 arrests on charges of criminal association, murder, extortion, production and trafficking of narcotics.
The operation of the Carabinieri of Calatanissetta, coordinated by the Dda nissena has shed light on incidents of production and trafficking of marijuana, extortion, crimes concerning both common and war weapons, on the instigators and perpetrators of numerous murders or attempted murders in the territory of municipality of Riesi from the early nineties.
The articulated investigative activity has, in fact, allowed to clarify some murders, consummated or attempted, thanks to the response to the statements of some collaborators of justice. Most of the bloody events are part of the mafia war that for about a decade has bloodied the city of Riesi, in the context of the opposition between the mafia families belonging to what we and the stiddare formations.
The oppositions of organizations, then, were added in the re-enactment, conditioned by the internal fracture of our own after the arrest of Salvatore Riina, those internal to the same mafia due to the will of some affiliates to undermine the members of the Cammarata family.
In several of these cases, in fact, already had proceeded against other defendants but had not yet reached the necessary completeness of the elements against those for whom, today, we proceed.
The first murder dates back to 14 March 1992 in the inhabited center of Riesi when Angelo Lauria was killed, because he was considered close to the Riggio. The murder of Salvatore D'Alessandro who was killed in Riesi in Via Roma on June 17, 1996, murdered for internal family disputes regarding the distribution of the extortion proceeds.
The murder of Michele Fantauzza was committed in Riesi on February 28th 1997. Fantauzza would have been killed because he was close to the Riggio. The attempted murder Tullio Lanza of 1997, at the time councilor for public works in the municipality of Riesi who refused to make himself available to the family. The murder of Pino Ferraro who was killed in the inhabited center of Riesi on November 4, 1997. Ferraro was killed for offering a ride to Vincenzo Cammarata's wife. The attempted murder of Salvatore Pasqualino, in 1997 would have occurred because he was close to the Riggio. The murder of Gaetano Pirrello dates back to January 8, 1998, and would have been killed by disputes between the Salamone and Pirrello families.
The murder of Andrea Pirrello and the attempted murder Salvatore Pirrello date back to September 24, 1998. Salvatore Pirrello is the brother of Gaetano who could have avenged the murder of his brother.
A complex investigative activity, carried out with numerous technical activities and with detailed observation and tracking services, was then launched in 2014 to monitor the activities carried out by members of one of the most important mafia families in the province. The brothers Pino and Vincenzo Cammarata, after the respective catches, would have used the family members still in a state of freedom to commit crimes.
The activities have allowed to demonstrate that the mafia family still maintains an undisputed control over the territory so much so that it can still impose "lace" on entrepreneurs and economic activities that, in the event of resistance, become the object of damage and threats.
Daniele Fantauzza would have created, with external subjects, a criminal association aimed at the production of marijuana, an activity that was carried out on an almost industrial scale so that, in two years, plantations were seized for over 4000 plants and product ready for sale for more of 250 kilos in the territory riesino. The group would have sales channels with other provinces of the island also taking advantage of the links favored by Fantauzza membership to the mafia family. The proceeds from the production were destined in part to find the resources necessary to sustain the members of the mafia family.
The execution was carried out, simultaneously and with the collaboration of the respective provincial command of the weapon, in the provinces of Caltanissetta, Monza and Ascoli Piceno.
Those arrested in prison are: Calogero Altovino, 37, Michelangelo Amorelli, 45, Carmelo Arrotti, 48, Francesco Cammarata, 57 (brother of the bosses Pino and Vincenzo), Giuseppe Cammarata (son of Pino), 41, Maria Catena Cammarata, 64 (sister of Pino, Vincenzo and Francesco), Gaetano Cammarata, 44, Carlo Crapanzano, 53, Giuseppe Di Buono, 23, Giuseppe Di Garbo, 77, Daniele Fantauzza, 36, Ezio Fantauzza, 30 years old, Angelo Ficicchia, 64, Gaetano Ficiccchia, 29, Rocco Ficicchia, 60, Gaetano Forcella, 44, Rosolino Li Vecchi, 57, Gaetano Lombardo, 67, Rosario Marotta, 40, Rocco Turco, 45 years. Arranged the domiciliari, however, for Franco Bellia, 47, Daniele Correnti, 53, Filippo Riggio, 39, Salvatore Salamone, 81 and Giovanni Tararà, 44 years.

04 July 2018 - Mafia in Catania, confiscated assets for 1.3 million to exponent of the Santapaola clan
The assets related to Luciano Salanitro, 51, were confiscated, considered close to the mafia "Santapaola-Ercolano". In particular, the "Rivombrosa" bar in Via Vittorio Emanuele, at the corner with the Via Del Plebiscito in Catania, has been definitively acquired in the state heritage.
The commercial operation had been seized as part of the patrimonial investigations conducted by the men of the anti-crime police division of the Catania police station, which allowed the commissioner to request the preventive seizure of the assets of Salanitro.
Together with the bar activity, two apartments in the city center, a car, two motorcycles and several bank accounts were confiscated. All assets have a value of one million three hundred thousand euros that are now irrevocably owned by the State and will be managed by the Agency for assets confiscated from the mafia.
The policemen retraced the dense network of ownership transfers, nominee and other escamotages put in place to cover the real belonging of the huge assets directly attributable to the Salanitro. His small economic empire has been illicitly acquired and used to reinvest the gains of malfeasance in a "clean" way.

06 July 2018 - Mafia, a construction contractor arrested in Castelvetrano: "Messina Confident Man of Trust". Seized 2 companies
The arrest of Nicolò Clemente, a 50-year-old man, is considered a man trusted by the fugitive boss Matteo Messina Denaro. The Dia of Trapani has carried out an order of custody in custody, issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Palermo, at the request of the local District Anti-Mafia Directorate, against the building contractor, held responsible for criminal association mafia.
A provision for preventive seizure of the companies Calcestruzzi Castelvetrano srl, which deals with the trade of cement mixes, and Clemente Costruzioni srl, engaged in the earth-moving and general construction of buildings, both with headquarters in Castelvetrano related to Clement.
The investigative activities that led to the arrest and seizure, arose from statements made by the collaborators of justice Lorenzo Cimarosa and Giuseppe Grigoli, both definitively convicted of belonging to the mafia family of Castelvetrano. Both have indicated Clemente as one of the most active entrepreneurial expressions of that association, capable of infiltrating and conditioning the local economic fabric in the public and private building sectors and in the bituminous conglomerate trade, to ensure significant financial resources to the aforementioned family.
The family nucleus of Nicolò Clemente has always been considered part of the hard core of the mafia clan active in the city of Castelvetrano. According to the investigators, his brother Giuseppe would be part of the narrower and more trusted circle of Messina Denaro's friends. He was convicted for the crime of mafia-type association and for some murders committed in competition with the fugitive boss. Dangerous killer of our trapanese, Giuseppe Clemente exercised the business together with his brother Nicolò.
After the sentence to life imprisonment, Joseph, afflicted by depressive crises, committed suicide in prison in 2008, just on the birthday of his friend Matteo Messina Denaro, finally averting the danger of being able to succumb to the temptation to collaborate with justice, circumstance lived with great fear by the mafia association and by her own family.
The brothers Clemente, Giuseppe and Nicolò, are the sons of Domenico Clemente, cousin of the historic Mafia boss Giuseppe Clemente, who was condemned for having been "head ten" of the mafia family of Castelvetrano.
According to the investigators, the link between the Clemente family and the Messina Denaro family, would also be entrepreneurial in the company "Enologica Castelseggio srl", an activity established in the eighties, today definitively confiscated as direct expression of the mafia families of Castelvetrano and instrument for to recycle money.
The investigations have shown that Nicolò Clemente would have a strong direct and privileged relationship with Messina Denaro. Over time it has systematically participated, through the two companies currently in seizure, in the division of orders in the construction and concrete sectors, which took place within an entrepreneurial mafia circuit, in addition to Clemente entrepreneurs Giovanni Filardo , Giovanni Risalvato, the same Lorenzo Cimarosa and Rosario Firenze. The first three sentenced definitively for the crime the offense of mafia association. Florence is currently detained with first instance conviction.
According to the investigators, Nicolò Clemente would be fully integrated into the mafia-entrepreneurial castelvetranese context through a logic of division inspired by the top of the mafia family and implemented by systematically resorting to violence and threats against the riotous clients to bend in front of his mafia caliber. The control of the territory was delineated "... as quannu lu actu goes pisciannu dunni goes walkannu ..." (as does the cat that urinates to delimit its territory), This would be the programmatic manifesto confessed by the same Clemente during an intercepted dialogue .
Among the main evidence, the relationship of "collaboration" of trust nature between Nicolò Clemente and Vito Cappadonna stands out, condemned for having helped Messina Denaro during his inaction, making available to him various lodgings and acting as vivandiere and co-prisoner of his brother Giuseppe Clement.
Also significant is the story, rediscovered during the investigation, relating to a request for "putting in place" that Nicolò Clemente "suffered" from the mafia family of Castellammare del Golfo for public works contracted in that territory, which the entrepreneur castelvetranese would have subtracted by saying that he is financially committed to supporting the affiliates of the Castelvetrano family.
Livelihood activity that was expressly attributed by Cimarosa to Clemente during an interview recorded in prison in 2014. Cimarosa said that Patrizia Messina Denaro, arrested in 2013 and sister of the fugitive, had received money from Nicolò Clemente and Rosario Firenze, or entrepreneurs who at that time would have divided the orders controlled by the mafia family of Castelvetrano.
The investigative activities have also documented some reserved mafia summits attended by Clemente and Dario Messina, presumed regent of the Mafia family of Mazara del Vallo, recently detained under the "Annozero" operation, during which there was a discussion of the division, among the businesses of our own, of the orders related to construction work in the territory of the municipality of Mazara del Vallo.
During the operation, the Dia of Trapani, together with the Sco and the Mobile Teams of Trapani and Palermo, also performed several local searches against alleged mafia castelvetranesi.

06 July 2018 - Mafia, the Bosio murder: the Supreme Court confirms the life imprisonment for the boss Madonia
The Court of Cassation confirmed the life sentence imposed on the boss Nino Madonia for the murder of Sebastiano Bosio, the doctor murdered on 6 November 1981 in Palermo by the Mafia. In the first instance the capomafia, considered the instigator of the crime, had been acquitted.
In the second instance, the accusation was supported by the pg Nico Gozzo. Madonia must also compensate the civil parties: the wife and daughter of the victim and the Order of Physicians of Palermo. The liquidation of the damage will be arranged in civil law but the appellate college has a provisional amount of 400 thousand euros in total.
The trial in Madonia began in 2011 after the request for referral of the former prosecutor of the Dda Lia Sava, brought forward as a result of the expertise of the Carabinieri del Ris on the projectiles used by the hitmen. The weapon that was used to kill Bosio, a caliber 38, would in fact be the same that seven months later, June 5, 1982, was used by the killer to kill two mechanics of the township of Passo di Rigano, Francesco Chiazzese and Giuseppe Dominici. For that double murder, Madonia had been condemned. On the motive of the ambush, the repentants provided several versions: from revenge for the poor surgery done by the doctor to a mafioso, to the refusal of the victim, who worked in the hospital, to turn a blind eye to contracts rigged in health.
