yatescj7781 wrote: Thu Apr 19, 2018 10:15 am The only question I have is about the October 75 making ceremony. Jog his memory if it was 75,76, or 77 and if the lucchese and Genovese made members before 76 and Allie boys being made in 72
He has always claimed 1975 so he will probably stick to that even if he now knows he remembered it wrong. The books opened up in early 1976 so he can not have been made in 1975.
I just want the record set straight on this. Saying nobody was made in New York until 76 has holes in it because Allie Boy Persico was made in 1972. You think the other 4 families are going to say Aw Shucks, the snuck one in on us? Now the Gambino's might have said we don't want to make anybody anyways at this time, the Bonanno also because of their boss situation. But the Lucchese and Genovese very well could have said if the Colombos get to make a guy then we get to make a guy. Wasn't there an FBI report concerning this fact? Saying that all 5 families were making 2 guys because of all of this?

Italian-Americans entering mainstream American life, and there not being the quantity or quality of new recruits, is the #1 reason the number went from 24 to 9. Repeated prosecutions certainly helped the process but there's a reason why most of the remaining families are in the Northeast - it's where most of the Italians are.
this explains the fact that families like LA are extinct, in the remaining families many members are over 60 years old

The families in the west coast was always small:San Francisco (25 made men),San Jose (20 made men),LA (30/40 made men) and was disbanded because there no much italians in California;same thing for the denver family where the families of new orleans and tampa had big bosses that wanted made fresh blood and the family died with them etc etc

I think that the correct list would be:

NYC
Decavalcante
Philly
Patriarca
Chicago
Detroit (maybe a bunch of bookies but still active as family)

That's a good question and the answer - it depends on what report you're reading - has probably contributed to all the debates about the family there. In some things you read, Detroit seems to still be recognized. Other things, they're not. It certainly wouldn't be among 9 families remaining. As a result, I personally look at Detroit as a grey area where someone can go one way or the other. I go with the 9 families remaining excluding Detroit because of the relative lack of cases there, among other reasons.

You'll notice in that 1992 article both Detroit and Buffalo aren't listed as "close to being crossed off" but also aren't considered among the "powerful families" remaining. They were likely looked at as somewhere in the middle. And four years later in 1996 you had both the GamTax case in Detroit and the LIUNA Local 210 takeover in Buffalo. Those were essentially the last really significant cases for either family.
All roads lead to New York.
