Sources for a reporter are different from sources in a criminal complaint where the defendant surely knows who the cooperator was. Mayo's reason was they don't float out the cooperators name until they have a chance to defend themselves and comment. Bullshit. His LE sources either didnt tell him the name or told him not to release it. He got pissed when I said it was Anthony Persiano on his twitter. Started acting like a bitch saying "Well maybe you should come on the next Mob Talk if you know who it is"

You pretty much answered my question. Dave S wasn't sure who the rat was, which means his sources aren't that great. He can float whatever wiseguys name he wants around though.

Let's not get carried away here. Dave is a reporter. He works for a corporation that will chew him up and spit him out if he costs them money instead of making money. If he identifies someone as a rat before law enforcement does and he's wrong, he may very well get sued. At the very least it would be reckless given the platform that he has. You can't fault him for not confirming rumors if he isn't allowed to cite his source.

I don't believe its indicative one way or another how good his "source" is, it would be insane for him to get in an internet pissing match over the name of a suspected confidential informant. He should wait until one of the defense attorneys outs the rat for him.

There is always a strong possibility that your source would deliberately mislead you or be mislead himself. Naming a potential informant without identification from official law enforcement documents probably isn't worth the risk of being sued to the reporter, in these days. In the past maybe it would be but now Fox will drop Schrat without thinking twice.

I agree. It's called being smart by playing it safe, especially now, when these networks are ready to fire anybody over anything (especially white men) because that is the politically correct thing to do.
