It's worth pointing out that when Salvatore Maranzano recognized Al Capone as the Chicago fratellanza boss, that ended the career of the figurehead Mafia boss, Toto Lo Verde.
Was this Toto La Verde the successor of Aiello and rival of Capone?

I guess I meant the three smaller families average sizes, not necessarily their peaks.

He was the successor of Aiello but more of a puppet of Capone.

Thanks guys I really appreaciate it.

I have to admit that Antiliar made few good points, meaning we cannot rush to conclusions, mostly because we have very little details on what was really going on within the Outfit, especially on who was made and who was not since they were quite complicated during that period. But as I previousl;y said that we can at least approximately form a number of made guys within the Outfit with the help of reliable informations and also we have to include someone's guesses, which obviously must be backed with at least some strong speculations, not exactly facts, but detailed situations in which those individuals were involved in. For example, sometimes for me its enough to know for sure that "John Doe" attended the same meeting with Paul Ricca and Tony Accardo, if you know what i mean? Or for example when a non-Italian gangster says to an alleged Italian made member to "shut up" or"dont do this" or "do that"...

As for the old members from the Outfit, meaning the ones who were possibly made previous of the establishment of the Capone mob as a part of Cosa Nostra, I think that most of those guys were killed, demoted, retired or shelved by the late 1940's, especially the guys from the North Side. Also many members from the west and south sides were quite dead such as Rocco Fanelli, Dago Mangano or James Belcastro. Obviously there were a handful of others who continued to operate through the 1950's and even further, guys like Nuccio (Gloriana?), DiBella (Aiello?), Brancato, Taglia (West Side)... Also if we give or take like 5 or 10 members from the previously given numbers, still the numbers wont change much and again, I think that Chicago's numbers mostly depend on the non-Italians. I mean even if exclude the non-Italians, still there arent enough big time Italian names during that period that we know of so we can reach at least some high number like 150 or such...

I probably forgot some members or maybe I’m wrong about some, and probably Snakes can help me out, but lets say that during its peak or should I say during the 1950’s and 60’s, the Outfit’s Italian membership was over 100 individuals. Now I say “Italian” mainly because these guys belonged to both the Chicago Outfit and Cosa Nostra, which at the time was a national Italian crime syndicate BUT as we know that the Outfit was quite different from the rest of the national crime families, meaning the Chi boys also had many non-Italians as members of the organization, which few were placed on top and mid level positions. These non-Italian fellas were not members of the national Cosa Nostra organization but still they belonged to the Chicago syndicate and were involved in the everyday affairs to its highest levels. Also during that period some of these guys were retired, killed, died of natural causes or some operated in different states and cities. Here they are:

144. Murray Humphreys
145. Jake Guzik
146. Sam Hunt
147. Ralph Pierce
148. Les Kruse
149. Sam Alex
150. Gus Alex
151. Gus Zapas
152. Hyman Larner
153. Joe Epstein
154. Lenny Patrick
154. Jack Patrick
155. Dave Yaras
156. Sam Yaras
157. Louis Arger
158. Phil Katz
159. Julius Epstein
160. Sam Gearis
161. Hy Godfrey
162. Mickey Farr
163. Peter Tremont
164. Arthur Markovitz aka Louis Markle
165. Claude Maddox
166. Joseph Corngold
167. John Varlas
168. William Johnson
169. William Goldstein
170. Ken Eto
171. Joe Arnold
172. Irving Dworetzky aka Dworett
173. Aaron Oberlander
174. Mandel Skar
175. George Bravos
176. Nick Bravos
177. Pete Arnstein
178. Gus Liebe
179. John Drew
180. Louis Lederer
181. Ben Epstein
182. Paul Dorfman
183. William Block
184. Morris Goldstein
185. Frank Rosenthal
186. Leo Rugendorf
187. Irv Weiner
188. John Wolek
189. Francis Curry
190. Eddie Vogel
191. William Vogel
192. Tom Smith
193. Alex Ross
194. Guy Sparta

So my point is that if we mix all together the Italian and the non-Italian members, we just might create an approximate number(for example 200) regarding the membership within the Outfit, during its peak. Also, my opinion is that the number 300 is a little bit too much but we cannot know for sure…
Nice list btw...

While I appreciate the list and the research...the notion that you can simply "combine all of the italian and non italian members" is absolutely preposterous IMO.

Could you imagine if one were to combine say, the Gambinos or the Genovese and all of their associates?

What does that make them over a 1,000 man family? lol come on

I thought we were trying to pin down...MADE ITALIAN MEMBERS?

Again, nice work on the list regardless.

Thanks man and i really appreciate your comment. Now dont get me wrong because youre talking about two different things, meaning "associates" and "members" not made but still members. You see, guys like Humphreys, Hunt, Kruse, Guzik, Alex or Larner were not associates of the Outfit and this statement can be backed by their involvment in important operations, they used to attend high level meetings, divided contracts among the lower level members, maintained the cash flow among the members, settling beefs etc. In other words they were involved in the everyday activities same as the made guys. Belive it or not, only in the Outfit :) If you dont believe it than you can include only the Italians and the number is again close to 150 and maybe more....belive me i can add at least 30 names but it would be pointless since i personally dont have a clue if they were made or not

Now I say “Italian” mainly because these guys belonged to both the Chicago Outfit and Cosa Nostra, which at the time was a national Italian crime syndicate BUT as we know that the Outfit was quite different from the rest of the national crime families, meaning the Chi boys also had many non-Italians as members of the organization, which few were placed on top and mid level positions. These non-Italian fellas were not members of the national Cosa Nostra organization but still they belonged to the Chicago syndicate and were involved in the everyday affairs to its highest levels. Also during that period some of these guys were retired, killed, died of natural causes or some operated in different states and cities. Here they are:

144. Murray Humphreys
145. Jake Guzik
146. Sam Hunt
147. Ralph Pierce
148. Les Kruse
149. Sam Alex
150. Gus Alex
151. Gus Zapas
152. Hyman Larner
153. Joe Epstein
154. Lenny Patrick
154. Jack Patrick
155. Dave Yaras
156. Sam Yaras
157. Louis Arger
158. Phil Katz
159. Julius Epstein
160. Sam Gearis
161. Hy Godfrey
162. Mickey Farr
163. Peter Tremont
164. Arthur Markovitz aka Louis Markle
165. Claude Maddox
166. Joseph Corngold
167. John Varlas
168. William Johnson
169. William Goldstein
170. Ken Eto
171. Joe Arnold
172. Irving Dworetzky aka Dworett
173. Aaron Oberlander
174. Mandel Skar
175. George Bravos
176. Nick Bravos
177. Pete Arnstein
178. Gus Liebe
179. John Drew
180. Louis Lederer
181. Ben Epstein
182. Paul Dorfman
183. William Block
184. Morris Goldstein
185. Frank Rosenthal
186. Leo Rugendorf
187. Irv Weiner
188. John Wolek
189. Francis Curry
190. Eddie Vogel
191. William Vogel
192. Tom Smith
193. Alex Ross
194. Guy Sparta

So my point is that if we mix all together the Italian and the non-Italian members, we just might create an approximate number(for example 200) regarding the membership within the Outfit, during its peak. Also, my opinion is that the number 300 is a little bit too much but we cannot know for sure…
Nice list btw...

While I appreciate the list and the research...the notion that you can simply "combine all of the italian and non italian members" is absolutely preposterous IMO.

Could you imagine if one were to combine say, the Gambinos or the Genovese and all of their associates?

What does that make them over a 1,000 man family? lol come on

I thought we were trying to pin down...MADE ITALIAN MEMBERS?

Again, nice work on the list regardless.
Thanks man and i really appreciate your comment. Now dont get me wrong because youre talking about two different things, meaning "associates" and "members" not made but still members. You see, guys like Humphreys, Hunt, Kruse, Guzik, Alex or Larner were not associates of the Outfit and this statement can be backed by their involvment in important operations, they used to attend high level meetings, divided contracts among the lower level members, maintained the cash flow among the members, settling beefs etc. In other words they were involved in the everyday activities same as the made guys. Belive it or not, only in the Outfit :) If you dont believe it than you can include only the Italians and the number is again close to 150 and maybe more....belive me i can add at least 30 names but it would be pointless since i personally dont have a clue if they were made or not
So does this list of supposed made members include all the Italian associates of the Outfit or specifically the ones who you think were made?

I feel like we're beating a dead horse here, but I think what's important to remember and emphasize here is that the Outfit itself - past, present, and future - was not exclusively an LCN organization like the other families. This is mostly because the Outfit as an organization predates LCN influence and was largely a heterogeneous mixture of ethnicities. The Italian LCN eventually became the core of the group but other "members" of the Outfit (associates) still played roles that were just as important, if not more-so, than the Outfit's made LCN members. The individuals mentioned by Villain were prime examples but even later on, guys like Frank Schweihs and Michael Posner played extremely important roles in the Outfit's structure.

Only the ones i think were made. It is almost impossible to include every Italian associate.

Well, in that case you can add in Lansky and people like him for NY....who had more clout than some made members...

See where we are going with this? lol

I mean, you can call them different things...members instead of associates...etc

But they were not made members of the outfit.

I probably forgot some members or maybe I’m wrong about some, and probably Snakes can help me out, but lets say that during its peak or should I say during the 1950’s and 60’s, the Outfit’s Italian membership was over 100 individuals. Now I say “Italian” mainly because these guys belonged to both the Chicago Outfit and Cosa Nostra, which at the time was a national Italian crime syndicate BUT as we know that the Outfit was quite different from the rest of the national crime families, meaning the Chi boys also had many non-Italians as members of the organization, which few were placed on top and mid level positions. These non-Italian fellas were not members of the national Cosa Nostra organization but still they belonged to the Chicago syndicate and were involved in the everyday affairs to its highest levels. Also during that period some of these guys were retired, killed, died of natural causes or some operated in different states and cities. Here they are:

144. Murray Humphreys
145. Jake Guzik
146. Sam Hunt
147. Ralph Pierce
148. Les Kruse
149. Sam Alex
150. Gus Alex
151. Gus Zapas
152. Hyman Larner
153. Joe Epstein
154. Lenny Patrick
154. Jack Patrick
155. Dave Yaras
156. Sam Yaras
157. Louis Arger
158. Phil Katz
159. Julius Epstein
160. Sam Gearis
161. Hy Godfrey
162. Mickey Farr
163. Peter Tremont
164. Arthur Markovitz aka Louis Markle
165. Claude Maddox
166. Joseph Corngold
167. John Varlas
168. William Johnson
169. William Goldstein
170. Ken Eto
171. Joe Arnold
172. Irving Dworetzky aka Dworett
173. Aaron Oberlander
174. Mandel Skar
175. George Bravos
176. Nick Bravos
177. Pete Arnstein
178. Gus Liebe
179. John Drew
180. Louis Lederer
181. Ben Epstein
182. Paul Dorfman
183. William Block
184. Morris Goldstein
185. Frank Rosenthal
186. Leo Rugendorf
187. Irv Weiner
188. John Wolek
189. Francis Curry
190. Eddie Vogel
191. William Vogel
192. Tom Smith
193. Alex Ross
194. Guy Sparta

So my point is that if we mix all together the Italian and the non-Italian members, we just might create an approximate number(for example 200) regarding the membership within the Outfit, during its peak. Also, my opinion is that the number 300 is a little bit too much but we cannot know for sure…
Nice list btw...

While I appreciate the list and the research...the notion that you can simply "combine all of the italian and non italian members" is absolutely preposterous IMO.

Could you imagine if one were to combine say, the Gambinos or the Genovese and all of their associates?

What does that make them over a 1,000 man family? lol come on

I thought we were trying to pin down...MADE ITALIAN MEMBERS?

Again, nice work on the list regardless.
Thanks man and i really appreciate your comment. Now dont get me wrong because youre talking about two different things, meaning "associates" and "members" not made but still members. You see, guys like Humphreys, Hunt, Kruse, Guzik, Alex or Larner were not associates of the Outfit and this statement can be backed by their involvment in important operations, they used to attend high level meetings, divided contracts among the lower level members, maintained the cash flow among the members, settling beefs etc. In other words they were involved in the everyday activities same as the made guys. Belive it or not, only in the Outfit :) If you dont believe it than you can include only the Italians and the number is again close to 150 and maybe more....belive me i can add at least 30 names but it would be pointless since i personally dont have a clue if they were made or not
Well, in that case you can add in Lansky and people like him for NY....who had more clout than some made members...

See where we are going with this? lol

I mean, you can call them different things...members instead of associates...etc

But they were not made members of the outfit.
I totally undestand you but you have to undestand that Lansky did not sat on the same table with Vito Genovese and talked about the affairs and problems within his crime family...well the truth is that Humphreys and Alex did share tables with the Italians and together brought important decisions on daily basis regarding their crime family and there are countless wiretapped convos for you to explore...

Also....Lansky worked for these guys or in other words he "opened doors" but in Chicago, Ross Prio one of the most respectable Sicilian capos around the country was forced to share territories with Lenny Patrick during one period...
