Genovese and Pleas
When did taking pleas begin to be used as a consistent strategy by the Genovese, and who were the ones who began to do it?

It likely started after then Consiglieri Jimmy Ida went to trial and got life while his codefendents (Bellomo, Genoroso among others) took pleas and were out in less than 10 years.

Around the time Giuliani turned the Southern District of NY into a bionic kick to the balls to whomever dared going to trial.

One of gottis best moves was the no plea rule. If I recall correctly his brother gene had a very reasonable offer on the table he wasn't allowed to take and got 50 years at trial

One of the many reasons GOtti was not well liked outside of Queens. Gotti couldn't get out of his own way.
Re: Genovese and Pleas
I think it was mentioned in this board that Gene Gotti received 50 years because Carneglia told a journalist he will piss on the judges grave and that's why the judge gave such a high sentence instead of a more normal one.
