According to some of our own members, thats one of the excerpts in the book, Natale claiming he was made by Bruno and was in the unions not just on the behalf of Bruno, but on the behalf of Carlo Gambino as well.
Whys it seem like, in all these books where bullshit seems prevalent, Carlo Gambino is the essential, Big Boss-type character, in all of them, lol?

Maybe because they knew him from the same bullshit books we know him from? It is one of the reasons I liked Gravano's book. He doesn't even try and pass off some kind of great connection with Gambino or try to make him out as some super Mafiosi. Not to plug it, but Underboss has always felt like one of the most authentic non bullshitty mob books. But that's relative.OlBlueEyesClub wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2017 11:05 am Whys it seem like, in all these books where bullshit seems prevalent, Carlo Gambino is the essential, Big Boss-type character, in all of them, lol?

I agree. Gravano is scum and like every witness he makes himself out to be the ultimate gangster who didn't betray the mob, they betrayed him, but his book is full of great info and was one of those early books I read that got me hooked on this subject.Adam wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2017 12:45 pmMaybe because they knew him from the same bullshit books we know him from? terrible book. no new info. waste of time. says he got made by carlo gambino and angelo bruno together. friends with hoffa.
his years with Merlino et al. were only a few pages.

Yeah it looks like total shit. Checking out the index the book makes no mention of Mazzone, Borgesi, Angelina, Ligambi, Lancelotti or any of the other major players from his time as Boss. However the book does mention Albert Anastasia, Tony Accardo, Vic Amuso, Carlo Gambino, Frank Balistriere, Lepke and a bunch of other people he never met or had nothing to do with. A real disappointment. Hopefully someone like JD can get ahold of Natale's debriefings so we can get some real info about his reign.

I think this can be traced back to The Godfather and the general believe that Gambino served as inspiration for the character. Followed by authors and journalists that made Gambino out to be the boss of all bosses which made him bigger than life. Today's mobsters are aware of this hence why claim to have known or worked with Gambino in order to make their story more intriguing and themselves seemingly more important.OlBlueEyesClub wrote:According to some of our own members, thats one of the excerpts in the book, Natale claiming he was made by Bruno and was in the unions not just on the behalf of Bruno, but on the behalf of Carlo Gambino as well.

Just finished the book. I'd echo many of the things already said in this thread.
The claim he was personally made in the 1960s in a private ceremony with Bruno and Gambino is beyond ludicrous. He might very well have been made earlier than he actually was had he not been in prison but that's not a reason to make stuff up.
His claim that one reason Caponigro hit Bruno when he did was because Natale was in prison and couldn't retaliate was also an eye roller.
Continuing on with the ego trip was him considering himself the "last legitimate boss" in Philadelphia and the "last of the dons."
Other stuff that didn't make sense is when he talks about making Turchi his consigliere...but then they used the "We're gonna make you" trick (ie in Goodfellas) to kill him. Did Natale's timeline get screwed up or did I read it wrong.
He also claims all the prisoners in Allenwood made a big welcome party for him AFTER he testified and got sentenced. Huh?
Not sure how he would know Frankie Carbo killed Bugsy but whatever.
I still question his assertion that Stanfa was involved in the plot against Bruno. As well as his claim that only John Gambino backed Stanfa as boss and the actual bosses wouldn't recognize him because he was made in Sicily.
His claim about the three family pact (Philadelphia, Gambino, Chicago) for Atlantic City in 1966 is interesting but also questionable.
If he had just stuck to actual facts (interesting enough) and been more thorough, it would have been a fine book.

Exactly right. What waste. He could have shed some light on Unions and Ed Hanley but didn't really say much. Just kept coming back to taking them back once he got out of prison. I would have been interested to hear more about skinny razor or any of the old time Bruno family guys but he just goes on about what a tough guy he was.Wiseguy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2017 11:38 am Just finished the book. I had the same questions about Turchi and about Stanfa being in on the Bruno plot. the only real evidence I have seen is him meeting with Sindone and Simone. I'm not really sure sure its been established that Simone was even part of the plot ?

According to Natale he was made by Merlino in November/December 1994 at a hotel near Veterans Stadium. Merlino also made Frank Gambino at this ceremony. Of course that doesn't sound as glamorous as being made in a joint ceremony by Carlo Gambino and Angelo Bruno.

The guy who coauthored, McShane, also wrote 'Chin'.
I'm now inclined based on the reviews on the Natale Bio To ignore this as well.
Any reviews of 'Chin' seeing as we're at it?
