The Outfit had less official rats because...?

Post by InCamelot »

The Outfit had less flipped members taking the stand than the Genovese had right?

Was it because the political landscape in Chicago was much more corrupt, and the lines between a criminal and a government official were sometimes more blurred?

That had a lot to do with it but they also made a lot less people. The second biggest city in the nation and they still had less made members at their peak than any of the five New York families. Philly made many more but they never had the political or police protection that Chicago did.

In addition to making less guys I would also point out how their members were typically vetted for a much longer time. Most guys weren't made until their 40's some even later. In comparison to some families that make guys in their 20's or early 30's I think it makes a big difference

Certainly the outfit has had more guys go down with the ship without even a peep. Numerous guys got 25, 40 years, life and still they say nothing. Guys like mike sarno and jimmy marcello could walk out of prison any time after spilling their guts, but they don't. Even Anthony calabrese not even a made guy but an associate. He got 60 something years and could easily be released if he gave the Feds the chiaramonte hit. Everyone knows he did it. He tells the Feds who ordered it and testify they'd let him go I'm sure

The person you have to worry about flipping is the person with the most to lose. The guy with nothing to lose is the guy you can most trust. The guy with money, a beautiful wife, kids and a beautiful home are the ones most likely to sing.
In 14 years the bitch will be a real money earner, yes sir........

Not to take your words as a science, but do you then mean the Outfit didn't have much? And say Colombo members had a lot more than Genovese ones do?

I'm interested in the idea of Outfit guys being so entrenched in the law and government in Illinois, but at the same time that would be more(?) reason for the Feds to clean them out, no? Hard to say for sure, but I wonder what it is about The Outfit.

They also always had more prominent members/affiliates that walked that line too (at least to general public knowledge), like Richard Cain, Ralph Pierce, Butch Blasi, rumours about Accardo, Giancana & the CIA, Outfit crew members being cops/ex-cops, city officials, etc etc etc...
And it just so happens they have the least rats in all of the most prominent families.

Even in New York most newly made guys don't seem to be in their 20s and 30s. More like 40s or older.
All roads lead to New York.

How many members are we talking about at their peak compared to Philly?

I meant over their lifetimes, Philly probably made more. Chicago may have had more or similar numbers to Philly at their peak; they probably had 100+ in the mid to late sixties. Not sure about Philly's peak but I'd imagine it was around that number.

I believe Philly had ~90 members around their peak.

Seems to be comparable to the numbers given to Buffalo and Detroit. Evidently the Italian community in Philly has proven to be a lot more resilient.

I disagree on that. Just off the top of my head I can name many many guys in ny made in their 20's and 30's. 20's certainly not a ton but most of the guys I can think of from ny were made in their 30's. Out of the two ceremonies we know of for the outfit the youngest guy was marcello and he was 40. Most of the other guys were mid 40's to late 40's

I believe pre-1960's, Chicago made guys at a younger age but as time progressed and they became more "selective," mid-forties seemed to be about the norm.
