Mark Scarfo suicide attempt
Hey guys, Jimmerz here! Hope everybodys been doing well. With the passing of Nicky Scarfo, it got me thinking about his son Marks failed suicide attempt. The common narrative (Which I believe was put forth by George Anastasia) was that after Nicky Srs. conviction, Mark was being teased relentlessly at school, which led to his attempt at taking his life.
However, according to Brigantine Police Officer Ralph Spina (Who grew up with Mark) in this article, Mark was the 'Salvie Testa' of the 3 Scarfo sons, and apparently 'Relished' his role of being son of the Boss, this kinda seems to at odds with the commonly accepted theory of what led to the attempt.
I suppose it's still possible, but it wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't much more to this story. Thoughts? - Jimmerz

"Brigantine police officers Lt. Jim Bennett and Ralph Spina have very different memories of the Scarfos and Leonetti from their days at Holy Spirit High School.
Everyone knew the Scarfo family was in the mob, but no one really talked about it, the men said.
“We used to always see them down at the underage club in Somers Point and at Soda’s, and then Memories in Margate. They would roll up with their entourage and everyone knew they were there,” Bennett said.
“Yeah, and the Scarfos, they got the girls. They swarmed them. But those were the guys with the cash and the clothes,” Spina said.
Bennett said it was the Miami Vice-era.
The youngest of three brothers, Mark Scarfo, and members of his entourage donned pastel and white clothing, slicked back hair and sunglasses.
“We called Mark, Don Johnson. We called them potato chippers. They were wannabes,” Spina said.
Bennett, 46, was four years younger than Nicodemo S. Scarfo — the middle Scarfo child.
“Nicky flew under the wire. Never fought. He was nothing, a nobody. Mark was the one who took his father’s name and ran with it,” Spina said.
While at Holy Spirit, Spina said he had multiple run-ins with Mark Scarfo that resulted in physical altercations. After one of those fights at school, Mark Scarfo called for backup.
“He called up his uncle, Crazy Phil and he came to school. He was waiting for me after school and he had a gun,” Spina said.
After an exchange in the parking lot, Spina escaped unscathed, but shaken up.
The anger still lingers.
If Spina could speak to Mark Scarfo now, he’d tell him to his face: “You’re a punk. You’re not your father. Your father was crazy and everyone feared him,” Spina said.
Mark Scarfo hanged himself in 1988 when he was 17 and was in a vegetative state before dying in 2014.
Brother Chris Scarfo sought to distance himself from the notoriety of the family name.
His brother Nicodemo S. Scarfo — the quiet one — survived an assassination attempt at a South Philadelphia Italian restaurant on Halloween in 1989, then age 24."

P.S. - Thought it was interesting that Saul Kanes daughter posted several comments at the bottom of that article, and you can follow her profile back to her Facebook, where there's some pics of Saul Kane. Didn't really snoop around much to see if there was anything else of value to be had.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
Re: Mark Scarfo suicide attempt
The suicide attempt being because of bullying at high school never really sat right with me. "Your dad's a mob boss under indictment for a bunch of murders... loser!" I don't know where that part of the story came from originally. Was it Leonetti? If so, he may have been trying to paint a different picture.
Seems more likely that the trauma of having his father, cousin, and other close people locked up would have pushed him over the edge. He's in a number of the Florida photos posing with everyone. I don't know if he was a wannabe like the cop is saying, but he was around all of those guys.

Serp (I know some of you don't find him reliable, but in my experiences, he's always been right with me and some of the things I've discussed with him Philly LCN related) seems to have a relationship or atleast knows members of the Scarfo family, even those whom were never involved in crime. I remember discussing that specific article with him, as it was posted a while ago on gbb, and he said it's mostly accurate. While Mark was never a bully or anything like that, he says that Mark actually relished being the son of a mob boss in a way. So I think that article may have some truth to it, but who knows.
I don't know who started the whole "he was bullied because his dad was a mob boss" scenario, but it seems like BS to me as well. Most high school kids would either be scared to cross him, or desperately attempt to be his friend so they can be apart of his "circle" and get the kinds of favors kids that age would ask for. I just can't imagine some kid going "The news says your dad killed this guy and now owns a piece of a casino...SWIRLIE TIME!!" I just can't see it.

Re: Mark Scarfo suicide attempt
I was able to find an old article from 1988 where they interviewed neighbors who knew Mark Scarfo and they claimed he had been picked on, with one of his classmates saying people started fights with him for no reason. A friend of the Scarfo family apparently said Mark had a drug problem, though his autopsy showed no drugs or alcohol in his system. Of course, all of this could be friends/neighbors trying to paint Mark Scarfo in a sympathetic light given the tragedy. Happens after tragedies all the time.OlBlueEyesClub wrote:Serp (I know some of you don't find him reliable, but in my experiences, he's always been right with me and some of the things I've discussed with him Philly LCN related) seems to have a relationship or atleast knows members of the Scarfo family, even those whom were never involved in crime. Side note, but I would pay big time to get a book filled with the phone conversations between Scarfo Sr. and Jr. while Sr. was in prison. Those snippets that came out during the Scarfo Jr. case had me dying on the floor when Scarfo Sr. starts talking in third person.

Good to see you back Jimmerz!
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....
Re: Mark Scarfo suicide attempt
Regarding Mark Scarfo's suicide, he was a teenager, who knows what was going on in his head or feelings when it he attempted suicide, who's to say he wouldn't have done it regardless what was going on with his old man and cousin. No one really knows.

Didn't he die years after he first became comatose, like a few years ago actually. I don't know if drugs or alcohol would show up in his autopsy, even if he did have a drug problem.
And I too would pay for some fresh Scarfo Sr/Jr. material. I hadn't even known they released snippets of their convos during the FirstPlus case. Do you happen to know if they're online and if so, point me where to find them?
Re: Mark Scarfo suicide attempt
Sorry, I didn't mean autopsy, but the hospital did tests according to the article and didn't find any. You're correct he was comatose and living with Nicky Jr. until his death a few years back.
I was trying to find some of the excerpts from the Scarfo Sr/Jr conversations but couldn't find them in articles. It might have been in the initial indictment or a detention memo, but maybe Ivan has it saved somewhere.
