Re: 52 wiseguy s in a year!
I didn't say it before.... but very sorry you lost a brother.
You get older and you really start to understand you can't get time back. It's a bitch....
I've kinda had a longstanding interest/fascination (let's call it what it is...lol) with the Sicilian faction, I don't think I'm alone on this one....
I've always viewed the Spatolas as a key component of that clan, but entrenched in Sicily like the DiMaggios.
And more into the money side. Is this.....not exactly correct you think? It seems all the clans had kids on both sides of the street.
Now that Felice himself posted in the thread, I'll continue my shameless solicitation of any and all info on Francesco Gambinos crew and associates. Did he run a Torreta decina in NY? Did he oversee US operations for a Consortium of Sicilian clans? Did he set up an international thing on his own?
Frank, between your comment on Catalano's true status, and Felice's question on how the Pipitones ended up Bonnanos and not Gambinos, I gotta ask.... were the Sicilian Gambinos ultimately in command? It's a long standing question of how intertwined the Bonnano Sicilian faction was/is with the Gambino Sicilian faction.
My interest was amplified when Cali had dealings with Accursio Diminio.
Were any of the Sicilian clan families big produce merchants? Or like....Olive oil, cheese stuff like that?
Sorry for the ramblings......

Not all clans were into illegal activity yes for sure there was both family members on both of the streets I can personally go through each gambino faction last name here in the states and tell you what legitimate business they were into now I feel that most you guys think people with family s on the other side (Sicily) are even run operations like as they were still on the other side no the gambinos ran shop until the three bigs got taken down in Palermo after that it was pretty much an open market and as far as here in the states conti had his own clans here as well just like many castellamaresi runners did as well

Re: 52 wiseguy s in a year!
By the mid eighties not many of these clans were left and NYC cosa nostra was turning very American I believe all of the heads of the 5 families by weren't even Sicilian and if so very American

@cabrini
Attention, the Spatola we were talking about doesn't belong to the Spatola family related to the Inzerillo's-Gambino's.
This Spatola family is from Torretta, Salvatore and his brother Federico, as well cousins Giuseppe and Federico.
All of them were moving H in the 80s.
Ciccio Gambino was the family boss of Torretta, then due to his permanent staying in the USA, Giuseppe Di Maggio was appointed as local boss. Gambino was then the boss of all torrettesi living in the States. Torretta had a very large presence in NY, many made guys.

The huge Usa-Sicily group headed by Salvatore Inzerillo started to fall down with his death in 1981.
John Gambino could save something in the Usa but when he went to jailt things really got messed up.
Rosario Inzerillo ended to be with Michael Di Leonardo for example, he didn't have any sicilian high level guy to answer to in NY.

This is a good one here...
When Ciccio........see I hate to go off on the deep end...dont wanna derail anything....but so many questions....
When Ciccio decided to stay in NY, did DiMaggio retain communications with him? Was that crew commanded/ from Sicily?
How, or rather what was Ciccio after he (abdicated?) the boss position?
A caporegime with Torreta?
He transferred to the Gambinos?
So these "Torretesi" were in fact Sicilian mafia members?
Any reason he didnt/couldn't maintain the boss position in NY?
Re: 52 wiseguy s in a year!
Yes torrettesi were answering to Torretta. They were doing drug business and paying tribute to John Gambino who was representing the Gambino family authority.
Ciccio Gambino was probably made underboss for a while.
He was not transfered to the Gambinos but he was highly considered and I remember I read he was requested to do it while he was in jail.
In the last police operation against the Torretta family (2021) there were tapes indicating that Simone Zito should have been appointed consigliere because old timers of the Torretta family living in NY were pushing for this role

I view both the Zitos and Davi as top tier clans, but they seem to be regulated to almost second tier positions within the hierarchies of Torreta/ Passo Di Rigano.felice wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 11:59 pm Yes torrettesi were answering to Torretta. ( See Angelo's research into Major and Minor societies. I have a hunch that there are some families where this dynamic continues informally...)
I honestly thought this was the source of the tensions between....was it the Zitos and Davi? Or do I have it wrong?
What is your take on Sylvesteo Davi? The way he was described, it seems the Torreta presence in NY is still there? He was described, if I remember correctly as something of a successor to Cali. Obviously he's not part
of a Gambino administration, but is he the conduit for all contact between Siclian mafia and the Gambino family? Or Sicilian Mafia in GENERAL. One of the VERY interesting things about Cali is he seemed to be like.....and if it was a thing it was probably unofficial, but he seemed to be the official American contact for ALL Sicilian mafia guys in the US. But this could just be all informal too.
Or Calogero Davi with the Luchesses?

Did you cross paths with Anthony Fasitta or know who he was with, Frank? Very little out there on him. I know it was after your time, but by the 2010s Peter Lovaglio testified that Fasitta was "captain of the Queens crew".
'You don't go crucifying people outside a church; not on Good Friday.'
Re: 52 wiseguy s in a year!
Davì is very close to Lorenzo Mannino's. His uncle Calogero was made with the Lucchese family
