LIUNA REGIONAL BOARD

Post by 7digits »

Familiar names here running LIUNA in the New England Region. The same names and family members as decades ago…

DONATO A. BIANCO, JR.
LIUNA Vice President & New England Regional Manager
Donato (Dan) A. Bianco, Jr., was appointed LIUNA Vice President and New England Regional Manager of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) on May 1, 2023. Brother Bianco has made his career in the labor movement as a well-respected advocate for workers’ rights and opportunities for economic development while fostering strong labor-management partnerships in both the public and private sector.
A second-generation laborer, Brother Bianco is a proud member of Construction and General Laborers' Local Union 271 in Providence, RI. In 1990, Brother Bianco began his career working as a construction craft laborer before rising through the ranks of Local Union 271, being elected as Secretary-Treasurer of Local Union 271, an office he held for nearly 20 years. Additionally, Brother Bianco previously served LIUNA as an International Representative assigned to the six New England States and New York for 23 years, until his appointment as New England Assistant Regional Manager.

Armand E. Sabitoni, General Secretary-Treasurer & New England Regional Manager

Armand E. Sabitoni is a second-generation Laborer, who worked his way from general construction laborer to one of the highest offices of the Laborers' International Union of North America.
Rising steadily through the ranks of LIUNA at the local, district council, and international levels, Sabitoni has held the positions of auditor, Vice President, and President of Local 271, Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer of the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council, LIUNA Vice President and New England Regional Manager, and Assistant to the General President.
Sabitoni became General Secretary-Treasurer, LIUNA’s second highest ranking office, on May 1, 2001. He continues to serve as New England Regional Manager, representing more than 60,000 members across the six New England states, as well as most of New York State.

Michael F. Sabitoni, General Secretary-Treasurer

Michael F. Sabitoni became the General Secretary-Treasurer of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) on May 1, 2023. Mr. Sabitoni is a second-generation Laborer who began his career with LIUNA when he joined Providence, Rhode Island’s Construction and General Laborers’ Local Union 271 in 1988. Soon after joining the ranks of the local, Mr. Sabitoni worked his way up to become a general foreman and steward while attending the Community College of Rhode Island and Bryant University at night.

You can see similar examples in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago where there are descendants of mob members and associates, usually long gone, who are in union positions. While their familial relations no doubt played a part in it, these people are otherwise a part of mainstream, law-abiding society.
All roads lead to New York.

The issue becomes that people installed through corrupt means should never be trusted - and they are still in the governing bodies today. If you were the kid of a mob guy who got put into a business agent role or supervisory role, that likely means you skipped all the training the rest of us had. You have no skills to do your job, yet you continue to exist there. Why? In my experience, its because you are either making guys money in other ways taking kickbacks and essentially bribing guys for votes - OR the threat of your family's connections still permeates the local. The mob is definitely mostly dead - but these unions with all the familiar names are the exact pockets they still exist in - small locals (small potatoes comparatively) but still existing.

They never made any such claim.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

There were some residual cases involving the New England LCN and the Laborers in the 2000s. Nicholas Manocchio oversaw the organizing fund and was indicted in 2008. The FBI hasn't made any such statement as to things at present.
All roads lead to New York.
