Harlem 1930s-1970s

Post by Don_Peppino »

This is a request to the members/brilliant researchers on the forum, I am currently working on a project pertaining to the history of the heroin trade and numbers racket in harlem .

Can we come up with a list/succession chart of the Capos and Soldiers who were based in or operated in Harlem from all the families. Also powerful associates and who they were affliated with.

The second reason for the request is, I have 10 tabs open for the search engine, so I figured I might need some help. Plus it might spark interest on the board.

Also can someone tell me how to post picture again? I found some great news clipping I'd like to share but forgot how to post.

Please and thanks in advance!

Gambino Family:
Leo's East Harlem Crew:
1. Arthur Leo (1957?-1965);
2. Anthony Napolitano (1965-1987);
3. Ralph Mosca (ft. 1980-1987, acting);
4. Ralph Mosca (1987-1999);

Lucchese Family:
107th Street Crew (East Harlem):
1. Vincent Rao (1931-1951);
2. John Ormento (1951-1959?);
I don't know what happened to that crew.

If I'm not mistaken, Rosato's crew was also based in East Harlem, but I don't know his succession chart.

According to westside1931 on Reddit who is very knowledgeable
Bowat took over Carmine “Willy the wop” Locascio’s crew
I think this is a reference to the East Harlem crew because Bowat did eventually become the Captain of that crew

Quadtree thanks alot. What about the Bonannos? I know they had members operating in harlem from the Bronx during the Galante "super capo" era. I guess the Profaci-Colombos were nonexistent in Harlem?

You are welcome. Galante himself started in East Harlem, he was born there. Here is the captain's succession for this crew:
The origins of the crew are probably in the crew of Giovanni Bonventre:
1. Giovanni Bonventre (?-1939);
2. Domenico Sabella? (1939-1943);
3. Giovanni Bonventre (1943-1958);
4. Domenico Sabella (1958-1960);
5. Michael Sabella (1960-1968);
The crew is combined with the crew of Philip Rastelli.
Somewhere in the 1950s, the Galante crew was separated from the Bonventre crew:
1. Carmine Galante (1950s?-1960s?);
2. Joseph Notaro (1959-1962, acting);
3. Joseph Notaro (1962-1965);
In 1965, the crew was divided, one part was headed by Michael Consolo, the other by Armando Pollastrino.
Consolo crew:
1. Michael Consolo (1965-1966);
2. Frank Mari (1966-1967);
3. Michael Consolo (1967);
4. Nicholas Marangello (1967?-1972);
5. Michael Zaffarano (1972-1975);
6. Vincent Capasso (1975-1976, acting);
In 1976 the crew was merged with Angelo Presenzano's crew.
Pollastrino crew:
1. Armando Pollastrino (1965-1980);
2. Dominick Trinchera (1980-1981);
3. Gabriel Infante (1981-1987);
The further fate of the crew is unclear; it was probably divided into the crews of Musillo and Graziano.

This is a Lucchese question:
In generic bios of Tommy Brown's consiglieri Stefano "Steve" Lasalle, it says that he controlled their numbers racket in Harlem but I haven't been able to dig up much of anything regarding him. Does anyone know his backstory? Or at least how the Luccheses figure into the Harlem dynamic?

The general Harlem history has always been Genovese centric, it's harder to make some of these other connections.

The Lucchese Family started in East Harlem and the members there typically branched into the Bronx, Queens, and Long Island.

LaSalle was part of the Corleonese core of the early Family like Reina, Gagliano, etc. Don't know if he was a capodecina under Reina or what but he was consigliere, underboss, and acting boss over the next few decades.

What I find interesting is, this particular bust is shortly after the "Havana conference". The Luciano and Gagliano Families were already kneedeep in dope, havana wasn't the starting point like widely thought.

Would it be fair to say that Harlem was a Corleonese dominated area as far as the italian element is concerned?
For instance, Ciro Terranova (of the Luciano Family) was Corleonese and was prominent figure in the area for a peroid of time as well. And it does appear, in the case of the Gagliano Family, the Corleonese were instrumental and the forerunners of the latter-day "Concrete Club", with their development, infiltration, and monopolizing the Construction rackets. That started with the Reina-Gagliano-Pomilla-Lucchese network in Harlem.
