Good story on how Barney Bellomo became a Genovese associate

Post by JohnnyS »

According to CI Peter Peluso

In around 1975, Barney's cousin (Liborio T. Bellomo) was involved in a shootout that took place in a Bronx bar with Michael Mancuso and Salvatore Maiorino's son. Maiorino's son was killed. Due to the incident, Barney began carrying a gun which he was later arrested for. Barney's father who was a made member but very sick feared retribution would be made against his son so he approached Tony Salerno and asked Salerno to protect Barney. Salerno put him on record with Sammy Santoro and that's how Barney became an on record associate and how he hooked up with the 116th St crew. Barney was said to be reluctant to hang around those guys as he preferred being around Ralph Coppola and Nicky Nelson who he grew up with but he stayed with them, became Santoro's driver and was made around a year or two later. Sponsored by either Santoro or Salerno.

I wonder if there's still bad blood between Bellomo and Mancuso over that incident.

Ok, how did I miss this. Bellomo must be the redacted name in the DEA report I have on the incident.

The Mancuso shooting involved Purple Gang members.

As I wrote in Hitmen, "It stemmed from a dispute between Filippone and two other Gang members- Anthony Maiorino and Michael Mancuso. Maiorino was the son of narcotics supplier and Gang associate Salvatore Maiorino. Relations between the three men deteriorated rapidly.
In the early morning of April 4, 1976, Filippone and some friends were at the Capri Lounge on Williamsbridge avenue in The Bronx. The Capri was a popular hangout for members of the Gang, including Pasquale Prisco and Frank Viserto Jr.
Anthony Maiorino entered with Michael Mancuso. Unbeknownst to them, Filippone saw them and made his move. He walked up to Maiorino and shot him dead at the bar. Mancuso ran outside, Filippone hot on his tail, chasing him down Williamsbridge Road. Filippone shot at Mancuso, hitting him in the back and wrist. Mancuso was unable to draw his weapon and shoot back, because it was in an ankle holster. Finally, Mancuso ducked around a corner and grabbed his gun .

As Filippone rounded the same corner, he ran right into Mancuso, who shot Filippone in the chest. Mancuso ran off and Filippone staggered back to the Capri. Filippone returned to his compatriots at the Capri, where he was taken to the nearby Jacobi hospital and dumped outside. Filippone died on the pavement before being taken inside.
Filippone’s wake took place on April 7th at the Giordano Funeral Home in the Bronx, with a funeral mass at the nearby St. Benedict’s Church, a neighborhood institution since the 1920s. Coincidentally, Maiorino’s funeral mass was also at St. Benedict’s, the day after."

I believe it was Chin who first told me about the shootout involving Mancuso. Shows the tense history between some of these powerful people who are still active today. Didn't know that led to Bellomo being put on record, very interesting.

Curious if Barney's uncle Leoluca Bellomo was a possible member. He was involved in a scam when he worked as a butcher and it certainly looks like Salvatore and Leoluca's father Liborio was an early member. We likely wouldn't know Salvatore was a member if not for the Cafaro testimony so who knows.

Mancuso was made in the 1990s if Bellomo wanted him dead for sure he would kill him before Mancuso induction.

Great info Scott and thanks for clearing up the year, Peluso said that the incident took place when Barney was 18 so I figured it was '75.

Was Mancuso charged for killing Fillipone kid? Or did he get off on self defense.
That’s the guy, Adriana. My Uncle Tony. The guy I’m going to hell for.

Barneys cousin must have been really young at the time, like 16, how was he involved in the shooting?

The cousin is two years older than Barney. He would've been around 21.
