.....in addition to my previous post...here's some miscellaneous information regarding the Outfit's non-Italians....

Additional info on the Alex/Nicoletti conflict and also a report regarding Nicoletti's murder and who were his close associates at the time:

Image

Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From 1952/53 until 1954/55 there was a conflict between Paul Ricca and Tony Accardo. Sources say that Accardo made a lot of vital mistakes and didnt want to step down. So the South Side group under Bruno Roti Sr. and Sam Hunt were with Accardo's west side group, while the other west side faction under Ricca and Battaglia (i dont have any info regarding Giancana's involvement) was on the other side. So in plane words, Accardo, Roti Sr and Hunt allegedly wanted to exclude the Ricca/Battaglia group from the bartender's union and so in 1954 two of Accardo's Grand Av enforcers Paul Labriola and Jimmy Weinberg were murdered by the Battaglia crew. (in addition, Accardo allegedly inherited Labriola from the late Grand Av boss Nick DeJohn)

Before they got murdered, story goes that Weinberg begged Alex for "mercy" and that it was Alex and Ferraro who allegedly betrayed their own boss Bruno Roti and also allegedly explained the whole scheme to the Ricca/Battaglia group. After that Battaglia allegedly called for a meeting on which was explained that both Labriola and Weinberg allegedly acted on their own, which in fact was another betrayal and so both of them got whacked in 1954. (this info mostly comes from the McClellan hearings)

Image

Image

Now, when the smoke cleared it seems that by 1955 Bruno Roti Sr was either semi-retired or shelved by the top administration (ill go with semi-retired) because in 1956, it was his alleged underling Frank Ferraro and Murray Humphreys who sat on the table with Ricca and Accardo and voted for Giancana to become the new boss.

So here we have two important things....first, Ferraro took Roti Sr's position as capo either in 1955 or 1956, and when Giancana OFFICIALLY became the boss in 1957 (the same year when Bruno Roti died) Ferraro became the number two guy with Alex as his assistant in controlling the Loop and First Ward.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Second and most important evidence is that we have a non-Italian like Humphreys who was on that same meeting and had the right to vote on who was going to be the new boss. This is just one of the many and probably one of the BEST evidences in which we can see that the non-Italians were part of the Outfit or represented a second group with its own official spot or seat on the Outfit's top admin and had the right to vote on who was going to lead the Cosa Nostra organization.

I already posted this in the FBI files section regarding Nick Palermo, but Antiliar told me to post it here.

So...again, I dont know if its the same informant because this is not taken from Anti's files...but still, here we go with another interesting statement regarding Gus Alex, Chuck Nicoletti and Nick Palermo...

Image

As we can see that in 1975, the informant placed Alex on the same level as LCN members Palermo and Chuck Nicoletti.

Before being shelved, by 74 or 75 Nicoletti was probably still one of the top echelon leaders and according to the informant Alex was allegedly on his level. This is again just one of the many evidences regarding Alex's high level position on the top admin.

In addition, (even though this info doesnt belong in this thread) another interesting info is Palermo's alleged high level spot next to Nicoletti and Alex (this is second or third similar information regarding Palermos alleged high level status), but again i think this story doesnt belong in this thread regarding the non-Itals.

Some quite interesting story regarding the New Jersey (Newark) crew and Chicago's Gus Alex....

I already explained one part of the following story in the articles section but I never posted the files. I also found some mistakes which I made years ago in my Gus Alex article (2015/16) and so lets get everything straighten out. The whole story is divided in many different FBI files and so I think I managed to gather all information in one whole/full story.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Although before I begin, I want to say that some researchers on this forum didnt believe that Louis Tornabene was a made member of Chicago's Cosa Nostra. Well he obviously was (according to this 1965 info), which again means that Alex, through Ferraro, had jurisdiction over Italian made members who in turn belonged to the Ferraro/Alex group (same as Pat Marcy, John D"Arco, Bertucci, Louis Briatta etc. and also Outfit Chinatown capo Frank Caruso).

Image

Image

Image

Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The whole situation occurred in September 1958, when a conflict occurred between Louis Tornabene (made member under Alex and Ferraro) and one alleged New York operator (informant) who was partner with Tornabene in several gambling operations around the Loop area. Besides not giving the informant's share of the illegal proceedings, Tornabene also had some personal debt towards the informant because Tornabne allegedly had gambling problems. Tornabene operated in Alex's district in which Alex had PRINCIPAL interest and so Tornabene kicked up to his district boss (Alex).

Image

Image
Image

So before he contacted his New York people, the informant first decided to contact Chicago Outfit capo and boss of the West Side Sam Battaglia through an intermediary only known as "Pope" (described as Italian white male with age around 55) who in turn allegedly belonged to Battaglia. In fact, Battaglia was known for having close Cosa Nostra contacts all around the Midwest and East Coast. So there was a meeting between "Pope" and the informant, in which Battaglia's guy stated that he has to receive information from both sides.

Image

While they waited for the decision, the New York informant, because of operating in the area without Alex's permission, Tornabene (CN made member) continued extorting and also made lots of additional problems to the informant. That same month, the informant was called on a meeting which included "Pope", Tornabene and 'Chappie" aka Charles Bertucci, another of Alex's and Ferraro's enforcers. "Pope" represented Battaglia's interests, while Bertucci represented Alex's interests.

Image

Image

Image
Image

On that same meeting it was discussed that the informant will not receive any cash from Tornabene or any expenses, and this swindle costed the informant lots of cash. Previously the informant also contacted one Outfit associate Maish Baer aka Morris Saletko, a known bookie, loan shark and burglar and according to the informant, Baer backed him up. But even with that, the informant still lost his cash but was very surprised by the fact that Alex showed more power than Battaglia in the syndicate's setup during those days, which again shows us Alex's huge influence even during those early days.

Image

So the only chance for the informant was to call his contacts back in New Jersey and the New York areas, and he also hoped for them to reach Tony Accardo who, the informant believed, was the only guy who can settle the dispute.

Image

In November 1958, Pat Marcy contacted the informant and told him that he wanted to arrange a meeting between him and Alex. During those days Marcy acted as Alex secretary and dealt with all of Alex's meetings, again which is another proof regarding Alex having made members under his rule. So during that same meeting Marcy ONLY made the introductions between the informant, Gus Alex and Frank Ferraro, and after that Marcy sat on a different table.

Ferraro allegedly told the informant that he was called by some people from New York and he knows all of details regarding the conflict between him and Tornabene and that everything will be taken care of, and after that the informant will have a conversation with Alex. So later Alex called for Tornabene who in turn arrived with Charles Bertucci, and according to the informant Alex and Ferraro aggressively questioned Tornabene and threatened him more than several times, to the point where Alex became quite furious and called Tornabene (made member) a “degenerate gambler.”

From the conversation between Ferraro, Alex and Tornabene, the informant came to a conclusion that this wasnt Tornabene's first time to make a mistake like that, by gambling Outfit's money. Alex also told the informant that it was one of Tornabene's associates Bennie Bernard who allegedly destroyed the informant's office on his own, and that Bernard will be excluded from the Loop area. Alex also spoke badly about Tornabene and told the informant that he (Alex) might take all of Tornabene's rackets, something which again shows us Alex's jurisdiction over a Italian made member from his own crew.

Image

Image

Image

Image

The informant informed his contact back in New Jersey, Salvatore Esposito, regarding the situation and the meeting he had with Alex and so the informant was told by Salvatore not give a nickel to the Outfit until the whole situation settles down. But things got worse for the informant when that same month the two brothers, Dominic and Salvatore Esposito, came from the New Jersey area to Chicago and had a meeting with the informant.

In addition, according to the informant, it seems that Salvatore Esposito was known as a quite dangerous individual.

The two brothers told him that he owed money to some unknown individual back in New Jersey which were previously invested in his Chicago operation, but the informant suspected that the brothers tried to extort him because they didnt tell him regarding the guy they worked for or were sent by. So the informant had another meeting with the brothers and he was told the same thing, meaning not to give any money to the Outfit until they see him again in Chicago after Thanksgiving.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Again with nowhere to go, the East Coast operator (informant) asked for some of the high level Cosa Nostra members back in Newark to intercede for him with Gus Alex. The informant also went to New Jersey on his own, and contacted one of the top level guys in Newark Louis "Coca Cola" DeBendetto who in turn only asked if the informant knew Chicago's Marshall Caifano and that was it. Later the informant also had a meeting with Salvatore Esposito.

Image

Image

In the next file we can see that in December 1958 (two months after the conflict occurred), the East Coast faction sent for one guy named Antonio "Tony" Trombina (?) arrived in Chicago and told the informant to get in touch with Gus Alex right away and to call for a meeting. Another individual present with the two was one of the Esposito brothers Dominic.

Image

This next file shows us that the informant told Trombina that he was going to contact Pat Marcy, who in turn was the only guy who was able to arrange a meeting with Alex. With that information, Trombina was quite surprised that a politician will arrange a meeting between the two, which means that Trombina possibly didnt know that Marcy was a Cosa Nostra made member, but the informant told him that was the only protocol in Chicago so they can get in touch with Alex. At first, Marcy allegedly advised them that Alex was very hard to reach but he will call them back in few minutes.

Image

When Marcy called back, according to the informant, Trombina grabbed the phone and started talking to Marcy in Italian and informed him that he was sent by "Toto" or "Tata" from New York, a good friend of his. I believe that from this example we can see a standard protocol in which Trombina points it out to Marcy that he (Trombina) was probably close with a high level CN member from the East Coast.

Again, Marcy told Trombina that he will call back and so after few minutes Frank Ferraro (the Outfit's underboss at the time) was on the phone and a sitdown was arranged that same day at the Normandy Lounge.

Image

So, the informant together with Trombina and Esposito went to the joint and few minutes later Frank Ferraro, John D'Arco and Pat Marcy (all high level made members) also entered the joint. Ferraro was introduced to Trombina and so they went and sat on a table, while the rest of the attendees waited on different tables. This again shows us some type of protocol when a high level Cosa Nostra member (such as Ferraro) is present on a sitdown and talks only to the member who in turn is either on a near level or simply also belonged to the Cosa Nostra organization.

After several minutes, Gus Alex entered the joint and sat on the SAME TABLE with Ferraro and Trombina, something which again shows us Alex's high stature within the Outfit and the respect which he constantly received. After 20 minutes talk, they also called for Esposito to join them on the table.

Image

After an hour, the informant was called to talk to Alex who "DOMINATED" the conversation, which means Alex was an OC leader who had much higher stature than the informant at the time and on top of that same informant was in Alex's territory. So Alex was able to control the whole conversation and explained to the informant on how Chicago's protocols went down.

Alex told the informant that nobody operates in his districts without his "ok" and that the money the informant earned either went to Alex or Ferraro. Alex also told the informant that he had plenty of time in finding the money, something the informant himself realized that even though he was backed by his cronies back in New York, still he was placed in Alex's pocket and was obliged to kick up money to him, too.

Image
Image

In the following convo we can se Alex explaining the protocol that went between him (Alex) and Tornabene for example. Alex also asked the informant on how he operated his racket and that Alex will send some people, which meant that Alex completely took over the informant's operation, but he (Alex) never forgot about Tornabene's mistakes.

Image

According to some sources, Tornabene owed $75,000 for the scheme and another $10,000 for the gambling dispute and he also he owed to Alex $60,000, and another $15,000 to Joey DiVarco, a known North Side Outfit made guy, and another $10,000 to one Outfit associate known as Robert Stein. It seems that besides other Outfit figures, Tornabene was also in debt to DiVraco and Stein. As additional info, Tornabene and DiVarco were first cousins since their mothers were sisters.

Because he allegedly forced Tornabene to pay his debts, it seems that Alex remained in a good relationship with his associates on the East Coast or the New Jersey area since according to one informant, the following year or in December 1959 after the Roger Touhy murder, Alex was allegedly hiding somewhere around the New Jersey area (probably Newark). In 1960, Alex was about to visit one "unknown town" in New Jersey which I believe was Newark, and in 1961 he was again in New Jersey.

Image

Image

Image

So in the next few years Tornabene sold or burned almost every joint that he previously owned, obviously for the insurance money. As it was expected, the remaining of Tornabene’s operations and his stature within the Outfit were taken over by Bertucci. After the situation settled down, it seems that Tornabene (made member) was ousted from the organization by Alex and the Outfit.

Image
Image

Image

In 1962, Alex ordered Marcy and D'Arco to close down all strip joints in the Loop area because of the huge pressure from the feds, exept for one which belonged to Tornabene who at the time was still in huge debts to the Outfit and Alex, and so he was forced to work it out.

Image

Besides Charles Bertucci, by 1965 it seems that the rest of Tornabene's remaining operations were also taken over by his brother Anthony who in turn again answered to Alex.

Image

Image

It seems that by the late 60's and early 70s, Louis Tornabene possibly paid off his debts and was really ousted from the organization since he had only one legitimate job.

Heres one quite informative conversation from 1965 between Outfit underboss Phil Alderisio and Frank Luzi, the nephew of Outfit capo and BOD member Frank LaPorte.

We can see that Alderisio talks about the protocol regarding the operation in some district. Alderisio explained to Luzi that whenever someone wanted to operated in his districts, that same operator was obliged to receive the "ok" from Alderisio, before opening shop.

Luzi also explained one situation in which one of LaPorte's guys allegedly asked Gus Alex for favor, but Alex allegedly told the fella that Alex wasnt able to do anything without LaPorte's "ok" since the guy belonged to LaPorte's crew.

So we can see that Alex followed the same Cosa Nostra protocol, by not getting involved with a member from different crew without first receiving an "ok" from the capo of that opposite crew. This means the main connection was between the Italian capo (LaPorte) and the non-Italian crew boss (Alex)

This was confirmed by Alderisio who also said that there was no other member in the Outfit who was stricter than Alex, meaning Alex obeyed the rules more than most of the Cosa Nostra members within the Chicago Mob.

Later Luzi told the same thing when he met Alex and that he was given specific instructions by the non-Italian boss (Alex) on who to see and what to do.

Image

Also heres another interesting document which again confirms Alderisio's (underboss) respect and subordination towards Alex.

Heres another file regarding Alex being "member of the governing board" since 1962 (official spot), and was direct with the boss of Chicagos "commission" regarding the rackets Alex controlled...

Is this "Operational"?

I dont think so. This is obviously organizational stuff. The informant is talking about the new CHANGES in the STRUCTURE of the Outfit from the early 1970's because of the lost of many high level guys.....and that Accardo would only consult with both Alex (non-Italian) and Aiuppa (boss) regarding the structural changes which means again we have a non-Ital and an Italian boss being involved in the structural changes of the Chicago organization ....this is not a scheme or anything like that...also it seems that same informant (possibly Pierce or someone else) knew a lot of details on what went down with all the crews during those days.....

Besides Pat Marcy, John D'Arco, Fred Morelli (another quite possible made guy since the days of Al Capone) and Louis Tornabene being made members under Alex's jurisdiction in various rackets, starting from corruption and extortion, to loan sharking, all types of gambling and prostitution, including semi-legit enterprises....I also have a good educated guess that Louie Briatta was also another made member of the Outfit who belonged to the Ferraro/Alex crew, but Im still trying to find a straight answer like I did previously with Tornabene. (when Ferraro died, Alex inherited some of these fellas and continued in controlling the crew which belonged to the Outfit's structure)

By 1961, Briatta had dozens of enforcers and operators under his rule regarding the rackets Alex controlled around the Loop and Near North Side.

Louis Ciriona was allegedly a "runner" for Briatta around the Loop area and he allegedly had a conflict with one crew boss from the same faction known as Lenny Patrick regarding rackets on the North Side.

Dont forget that Briatta answered to both Alex and Ferraro, while Patrick answered only to Alex according to Giancana's order in 1959. During that period there was an agreement between Giancana, Alex and Ross Prio (the boss of the North Side) for Patrick to take over some of the loan sharking and gambling rackets in the Rogers Park area (one of Prios territory) and to give percentage to the three previously mentioned bosses.

So when Patrick got in conflict with Ciriona on the North Side, he went straight to Alex to solve the problem, which confirms the previous statement. It seems previously Ciriona went to Giancana (the boss) and allegedly received the "ok", without first consulting Briatta, Patrick or Alex. Was Ciriona also a made member under Briatta and Ferraro? We still dont know.....

Image

Now, Ciriona going straight to Giancana reminded me of the situation in which Chicago Heights' Costello (made guy) went straight to Giancana regarding his problem, BUT this same situation also reminded me regarding the NON-ITALIAN DISTRIC BOSSES who mainly gave percentage of their income directly to the boss of the Cosa Nostra organization (including the bosses they worked for), same as all of the Italian underbosses, capos and soldiers who kicked up directly to the boss (some followed protocol, both Ital and non-Ital). Another interesting info is that Giancana also gave part of that cash to Accardo, who in turn probably also gave some to Ricca (the two top bosses). Here's how the process with Giancana went down.....(it seems the non-Itals were obliged to follow the same organizational rules as their Italian accomplices)

Another interesting info regarding former Bugsy Siegel crew member Allen Smiley and Chicago's Gus Alex. It seems Alex made phone calls to Smiley in 1959. In addition, some old time researchers believe that Smiley was involved in the Siegel murder and that the Chicago Outfit was allegedly one of the families involved in or gave the "ok" for it....

Heres another interesting FBI report regarding the leadership in Chicago during the days of Giancana. In addition, one of the informants "predicted" at least 10 years earlier regarding Alex having chances to reach the top. And so in 1972 (after the deaths of both Ricca and Prio) Alex really received a position at the top with both Accardo and Aiuppa.

Some interesting and almost funny info regarding old time capo Ross Prio who in 1964 wanted to rent an apartment in the same building where Gus Alex also resided. The informant, who in turn was the manager of the building, refused Prio's application and stated that if Alex wanted Prio in the building, he wouldve done something on Prio's behalf. It seems the informant also knew Alex as being very cautious and sensitive individual who avoided any publicity regarding his own residence. Thats respect.

....now, lets see something serious for which this thread was really created.

We have one informant labelled CG T-12 who first gives a detailed information regarding the areas which were controlled by Alex.

The informant also stated that the Loop was always the most strategic area for the Chicago Outfit since the days of Al Capone.

He also stated that since Capone's reign, the First Ward was assigned to one of the most powerful leaders at the time, Jake Guzik and controlled it for two decades. In reality Guzik was Phil D'Andrea's district boss in the First Ward and Loop.

Informant also stated that Frank Nitto and Jake Guzik were two of Capone's closest associates and that Jake Guzik also being labelled as "treasurer" for the organization was well merited (same as a Italian consiglieri, something which was previously claimed by other researchers regarding the Sicilian Mafia).

Image
Image

Now, lets talk about being a mediator between Outfit members (including made guys like Jimmy Allegretti), again same as Italian consiglieri which was again, previously claimed by some researchers

When Guzik died, his position was taken by Alex, while Humphreys represented him on the round table. So it is quite possible that Guzik previously also acted as mediator, since his protege acted as one between Allegretti and one of Alex's underlings Louis Arger.

This source comes from a Chicago Sun Times article but the feds confirmed the info and stated that the office already received information in the past regarding the conflict between Allegretti and Arger...

Inferior = lower in rank or status

As we already know Louie Tornabene was a made member of the Outfit and belonged to the Ferraro/Alex crew, and I already showed evidences in some of my previous posts, regarding the period when Tornabene began making problems such as holding cash from the organization or extorting associates from different families (Genovese), and that Ferraro and Alex somehow "saved" his life but forced him to pay his debts and after that they ousted him (shelved him) from the organization and was only employed as car salesman.

So, heres one interesting document regarding Tornabene being INFERIOR to Alex and was no longer in his favor...
