I've never seen someone as sad as Calabro in their arrest photos:

Guy looked ready to flip right there. Pure comedy.

I personally lean towards Casso. This is a guy that the feds wouldn't even let testify. I mean right away they knew they couldn't use him in trials. That's gotta say something.

True. The man was having a meltdown.

Apparently Calabro was growing his hair out and Competiello was sporting a beard in case they had to lam it.

gohnjotti wrote: Wed Jan 04, 2023 4:22 pm Re. Competiello: I think what you’re referring to is the Marasa hit. Competiello was initially only charged with one murder (IIRC): the Marasa hit, which he didn’t commit and wasn’t there for. It was only Basile who placed him at the scene of the hit, and it was that one charge that induced Competiello to flip. Kind of crazy.

What’s interesting is that Competiello was always one of the most loyal members of the Bay Parkway Boys. Some examples:
- Taking the rap for Frank Saracino in the ‘90s for an assault he didn’t commit, causing Caves to miss the birth of his first daughter.
- Visiting Michael Burnside’s house before the crew was scheduled to hit Burnside. He told Burnside not to leave his house that day, because Competiello didn’t want to have to kill him.
- When Competiello was ordered to murder Joe Miccio, his chop-shop partner, he did so the very next day.
- Prior to their indictment, Competiello offered to step forward and plead guilty to the Marasa murder so Gioeli and Calabro would go free.

And then, after he’s arrested for a murder he didn’t even commit, he caves almost immediately. I think a big part of his cooperation is a little known fact about Competiello’s personal life: according to him, his wife had no idea he was even in the Mafia. So when he was indicted, that alone must have been tough for their family. It wasn’t like Gioeli’s wife or Calabro’s, who worked together in those early days after the indictment to conceal evidence and create alibis. Instead, Competiello was on the phone with his wife trying to convince her he wasn’t guilty.

Calabro, more so than Competiello, apparently found it very difficult in prison, especially because he was isolated from his codefendants (whereas Gioeli and Saracino, for whatever reason, weren’t). Calabro first met with federal prosecutors in January 2009 because he was worried about the prospect of the death penalty, but was left for a year in limbo as prosecutors decided what to do with him.
Awesome stuff - thanks. I remember reading that thing about Competiello offering to plea guilty to help Gioeli and Calabro - read it on your Colombo site matter of fact lol

Definitely top notch when it comes to the Colombo info - your bios and articles have been a treasure trove. Colmobos as a whole are interesting in their own right, but I always found the Gioeli era especially interesting - with them settling the dust from the war, Gioeli gaining in stature, and his crew getting insanely busy and active. It's wild.

Mind if I ask where you got the info about Competiello's wife and family not knowing he was involved in OC? Just curious if you read any of his testimony transcripts or 5k1 letter or something. If you did - maybe a Competiello article on your site might be warranted some day? lol.

I remember reading a City document which was basically a summary decision on why the application for Competiello's Dad's landscaping company's waste removal license application was denied. Obviously that decision was solely because of Joey Competiello but a few interesting things in it ... claimed that Joey ran the company and had full time involvement there for about a year while his Dad was injured. Also said he had done grunt jobs like driving a truck and doing landscaping labor in the timeframe after he was a made man - and there was an interview transcript with his Dad where his Dad claimed he knew his son was hanging around 'the mafia' as early as 21 years old. When the heat was being turned on and things were starting to fall apart - did Competiello take a step back from 'the life' and basically try to work a straight job at his Dad's business?

Sounds like his parents knew who he was, plus the photos of Gioeli and the whole crew at his sister's wedding - so it's wild he was able to keep his own Wife in the dark. Maybe he got with her late in his career right before everything crashed?

Your Gioeli / Bay Parkway article is extremely comprehensive - not sure what other info on these guys is out there, but if you have anything else interesting to share (like the stuff in the post you made above) I'd be all ears

The information about Competiello and his wife comes from court testimony, basically a defense attorney asked if his wife knew about his involvement in organised crime, Competiello said no, and the attorney referenced a phone conversation where Competiello was trying to jog his wife’s memory to recall that he was at a wedding in Italy when the Marasa murder was taking place and couldn’t have participated.

And yes, he started working for his father full-time around the time he was inducted, actually. By 2004, his rackets on the street (chop shop) had dried up and he was down over $10g from Vincent Manzo Jr.

Maggio on the old forums was from that neighborhood and said the "Joey Caves" nickname was originally his tag name and he was into graffiti / hip-hop when he was young. Makes sense if he didn't fit the part back then.

They all lie. Heard on Burnsteins podcast which is the best that Salemme and Deluca lied big time.
Sammy or Gaspipe (prob both). This informant program is so fucked up and crooked from what I've gathered. Lazy work on cops part. Pasqua? c'mon.

However, police work like what tommy dades did with the mob cops trial is how they shoudl have to do it. There are great cops and feds out there that do their job honestly and serve our country admirably and I am grateful for them and firemen etc. Conservatively, 50% lie or lie by omission. When the rats story is contrived and curated by the cops to fit the narrative, that's dirty shit.

i'D love to see what the intellectuals on this site think like B. Christie Antillar and polacktony who really do research that is unreal especially after a long day of work, whatever they do for a livling. I mean tracing ancestry back to villages in Sicily? incredible.

ANYONE HAVE ANY GOOD INFO ON JOE DEFEDE? I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

Some interesting tidbits i got recently for those who haven't seen it before, some was sent to me:

The proof consisted largely of the testimony of four cooperating accomplice witnesses: Carmine Sessa (the former consigliere of the Colombo family's Persico faction), Lawrence Mazza, Joseph Ambrosino (both lower-level soldiers in the Persico faction), and Salvatore Miciotta (a soldier in the Orena faction).

Appeal for Teddy Persico, Bobby Zam, Richie Fusco Some info on Larry Mazza's testimony below:

"The cooperating witness Mazza testified as follows:

Q. Did you see any guns?
A. There was just one gun. When we were all leaving, Teddy Persico showed me a little pistol, a .22 that he carried in his pocket, a tiny one.
Q. Did he say anything about it?
A. That was his protection.

In addition, Mazza testified that Persico's wife came out of Persico's house and gave him and Sessa a bag containing a MAC-10 machine-gun and a silencer. Mazza and Sessa testified that they had a co-conspirator test the machine-gun in the woods of Staten Island."

Cutolo Jr shot a man in the back in the early 90s https://nypost.com/2002/08/03/mafia-snitch-went-loony/

More info on Cutolo Jr including him recording Black Dom Dionisio

"All of these crimes and all of the discussions on the tapes emanate from Billy Jr. and others," Levin said. "Alphonse Persico is not on those tapes."

But during his 17 months working undercover, Cutolo relentlessly asked what role Persico played in Wild Bill's death — a question no one could answer.

He frequented south Brooklyn Mafia haunts such as his father's old hangout, the Friendly Bocce Club on 11th Ave. in Dyker Heights, and met with wiseguys on streetcorners.

"I know you loved my father," he told one of Wild Bill's alleged crew members, Dominick (Big Dom) Dionisio, during one meeting.

"You know the only guy that knows [what happened] is the kid [Persico],'" Dionisio, 31, is recorded saying on another tape.

Cutolo also tried to sow dissent among the reputed wiseguys.

"The tapes have him saying, 'Don't trust this one; this one is an idiot,' but then to their faces Billy is their best friend," said one source close to the case. "He tries to get them to turn on each other."

On some tapes, Cutolo is heard muttering obscenities to himself about the men he had just met. "They all think I like them," he said on one tape.

In at least one incident, according to court documents, the younger Cutolo's wiseguy persona took on an intimidating edge. He was arrested in June after threatening to "baseball bat" a broker over a $15,000 loss in the stock market.

During a meeting with the broker's manager, Cutolo "implied he had connections to organized crime," the court papers said. The case was later dismissed.
