The Gambino from Sicily had there permission to operate in Philly if I recall correctly
What I meant was the term "transnational" was typically used for people like the Caruana-Contreras or the 'Ndrangheta, whose operations are themselves international.

It's weird to me how the mob is such a big deal for prosecutors in a place like Philly. A quick Google search shows that there have been 3500+ murders in Philly in the last ten years, and maybe 1 or 2 mob related. I'm not advocating for these mob guys, but the priorities there seem a little off. Some of these street goons legitimately have 10 or 20 bodies on them but you never hear about it nationally when they get locked up.

In the other cases the shooters tend to be black, so when you hear about it its "gun violence" to the media, not the fault of the person.

This is "unusual"? It's a routine induction ceremony.

"In the most unusual part of the indictment, prosecutors say Mazzone was caught on tape participating in a 2015 mob initiation ceremony in South Philadelphia in which his brother and four others became made members of the crime family. In the secret session, the initiates were captured pledging to “burn in hell forever if I betray my friends.”

They probably meant that it was unusual to be caught on tape and part of an indictment.

That makes sense.

You got a lot more headlines if you're the government when you can "take down" a mafia member. They don't care if the murders are over with. Taxpayer dollars would 100% be better off used elsewhere and they know that.

The prosecutors want a high win percentage so they can work for a Proscauer, Omelveny or hang up their own shingle. IF these guys were so smart they would start straight out of law School at Wachtell Lipton at 250K/ yr.
Q: What doesn't work when it's fixed?
A: A jury!

Yes it's a pretty low end legal job, at least on the state level. 9-5 basically, instead of the 80 hour a week shops you're talking about.
