Are we able to get a list going of those inside the store that were murdered/survived? Birthdates, death dates, parents, town of birth, etc.

Thanks for sharing!

Frankfort, NY reminds me of the Cangelosi family who lived in that area and were partnered with Tony Riela. Antonio Sunseri (another candy store victim) may have used the alias Anthony Cangelosi too.

Candy Store Shooting - August 22, 1935

There were 2 shooters and one driver. The shooters walked into the store and opened fire with their revolvers.

Victims:
- Vincenzo Troia - killed
- Joseph Troia - killed
- Frank Longo - killed
- Antonio Sunseri - wounded
- Jerome Bevinetto - wounded

Attackers:
- Nicholas Gallicchio
- Robert Gallicchio
- Joseph Barocco
- Leonardo Cipolla

The Gallicchios and Barocco were in the store but were not shot at. All three were wanted as materiel witnesses. A police tip named Cipolla.

Robert Gallicchio is named as Nicholas' nephew but the only match was his son.

I haven't been able to find Joseph Barocco ; some sources named him as Charles Baracco

Sunseri told the FBI he was from San Giuseppe Jato. He also told them Bevinetto was a "paesan" of theirs but Joel found he may have been from Camporeale and was Sam Monaco's bro-in-law which adds to Monaco and Troia sharing an office building.

Camporeale is close to San Giuseppe though and the mafia Families there have been heavily involved with each other going back a long time as you'd expect. Probably a lot of interrelation between the villages too so can't rule out Bevinetto having lived there or having relatives in SGJ.

Here’s a look at some of the men that were inside the candy store during the shooting:

Nicholas Gallicchio: Born Mar 14 1880 in Vallata, Italy. Married to Jennie Spatola. Lived at 345 S 6th St, Newark, NJ; his next door neighbors were Sam Monaco’s uncle and the Bevinetto family. His son was Jerry “The Boot”. Died on Jan 15 1955

Robert Gallicchio: Born Jun 3 1909 in Newark to Nicholas Gallicchio and Jennie Spatola. Married to Angela Marrone. Lived at 308 S 6th St, Newark, NJ. Died in Oct 1981

Jerome Bevinetto: Born Nov 17 1893 in Camporeale, Italy to Antonio Bevinetto and Catherine Rizzuto. Lived at 341 13th St. Newark, NJ. His sister Anna was married to Sam Monaco. Died on Dec 5th 1943

Antonio Sunseri: Born on Aug 8 1896 in San Giuseppe Jato, Italy. Married to Josephine (possibly Cangelosi). Lived at 41 Garden Ave, Belleville, NJ.

Leonard Cipolla: Born Aug 23 1883 in Partinico, Italy to Giuseppe Cipolla and Marianna Costa. Married to Marie Saladino. Lived at 621 Park Ave, Brooklyn, NY. Killed Jul 8 1943.

Joseph Barocco: Lived at 80 Mt Pleasant Ave, Newark, NJ

—————-

Cipolla was the protagonist of his own story. As far as I can tell, this was his only involvement in Newark.

I can’t find a Joseph Barocco that matches.

I strongly believe that Nicholas and his son Jerry were members even though they were never identified as such.

Even though their name was fairly well-known, I don't think anyone had really looked into their background before. Nicholas Gallicchio isn't mentionned anywhere (save for a few old newspaper articles), let alone in connection to the Troia murder.

Bob Buccino's book mentions them several times, but he didn't really know them. He called them Sicilian mafia members living in America (basically Zips) when Jerry was born and raised in Newark and was of mainland Italian descent.

Next to Ribera, Vallata was the biggest Italian colony in Elizabeth. Riggi's maternal heritage is from there and Nigro the consigliere too. Probably more. The Vallatese club was very big. Makes sense some Newark guys were from there since Avellino was so prominent.

The whole village of Avellino settled in this area.

Gambino member Michael Giacalone lived at the same address as Salvatore Lombardino and his family. They all lived at 298 14th Ave, Newark, NJ

Michael (b.1923) was too young to have been a member. However, his father Antonio (b.1882) could have been one.

Salvatore Lombardino even listed him on his WW2 draft card.
