I was reading the other day and saw that HK had done a FOIA on Philip Lombardo. The file stated that he had been a underboss to Vito Genovese. Interesting.
We know that Benny Lombardo was Coppola's acting captain for a while before he became boss, which is why I was confused to see Benjamin DeMartino listed as Coppola's AC in mid 1962, along with Joseph 'Joe Stretch' Stracci as Coppola's proxy in late 1963. Where is Benny?
Following Vito's imprisonment on a narcotics rap in 1959, it seems that either there was briefly a panel, or that Gerardo 'Jerry' Catena assumed the position of acting boss with Anthony 'Tony Bender' Strollo as his acting underboss until 1962, when Bender was killed. This leaves a small gap between when Thomas 'Tommy Ryan' Eboli was listed as acting underboss in 1965. I couldn't find any sources listing him as acting underboss in 1962. He was only a acting capo prior to Strollo's imprisonment.
So we have a 2-3 year gap between 1962 to about 1964/5, I wasn't quite sure who was the underboss. But then I realized that Lombardo could have been the acting underboss at this time. This would definitely explain who Stracci and DeMartino were the crew's acting capos instead of Lombardo. And this was the only time period where Lombardo "fits in" as underboss to Vito
1957: Lombardo is only 49 and a relatively low-mid level soldier
1957 - 1959: Gerry Catena is underboss
1959 - 1962: Tony Strollo is acting underboss?
1965 - 1969: Thomas Eboli was identified as acting underboss in 1965, and it seems unlikely for him to be demoted. Lombardo's health was also failing, as we know he had to wait a bit until taking over Coppola's Crew in about 1967/8.
So I feel like Lombardo was acting underboss from 1962 - 1964/5.
I'm still relatively new to the subject, and may be missing something. What do you guys think?
Lombardo as acting underboss?
